Here’s the spotlight on new books (and some trade/hardcovers/omnibuses) coming out of August for the indie publishers. It’s a smaller month for me, I left out a lot of titles that seemed to just regurgitate existing plots and stories we’ve all read before.
This one for Garbage Pail Kids Origins #1 (Cover D – Trading Card) brings back a lot of nostalgia for me. I’m loving this one because this original trading card cover is what I think of first every time GPK is mentioned nowadays.
This series won’t be worth crap though in terms of speculation though. Buy because you like!
Abolition of Man #1 (of 4) is an interesting concept.
“What do you get when you take a groundbreaking philosophical essay by C.S. Lewis and feed it into an AI image generator, one line at a time? The world’s first (and only) entirely-computer generated comic book, The Abolition of Man issue #1, by oil painter turned Eisner-nominated cartoonist Carson Grubaugh (Strange Death of Alex Raymond). Alternately hilarious and terrifying, Abolition gives a chilling peek into the world of the future, where humans and their most treasured passions have lost all purpose.”
Approach #1 (of 5) (Cover A – Haun) is not a ground breaking story or plot but could be a decent read.
Approach #1 (of 5) (Cover B – Black Variant) Francavilla
I really enjoyed the first volume of Eve and glad to see this character and story back with Eve Children of the Moon #1 (of 5) (Cover A – Anindito).
Eve Children of the Moon #1 (of 5) (Cover B – Lindsay)
The title alone makes me want to buy and read Flesh Eating Cheerleaders From Outer Space #1. Gonna be great bathroom going #2 type of reading material… So if you ever see me offloading this online and it says “New, Unread”, don’t believe me!
“When a meteor crashes in the middle of campus, the students at Pullman University don’t realize they’re being invaded by a cadre of body-snatching aliens. But when a group of cheerleaders are the first to stumble upon the wreckage, they’re transformed from normal students into flesh-eating cannibals. Soon, the problem isn’t going to be the creatures, it’s going to be the monsters that these cheerleaders become! Hearkening back to the classic horror B-Movies from the 1960s, 70s and 80s, Flesh-Eating Cheerleaders will set your hair on end with its horrifying action and its cannibalistic co-eds. uncensored edition”
Flesh Eating Cheerleaders From Outer Space #1 Uncensored Ed
Fruiting Bodies One Shot is something I’m really looking forward to. It’s definitely got that true indie book feel. Sometimes these indie books don’t heat up but the real prize is the story and art within.
“Frances, her brother, and his annoying friend Trent have their Pacific Northwest road trip derailed when a wrong turn strands them in the rain-soaked woods. Luckily, they’re found by a beautiful, friendly stranger who is eager to help them-but is her convenient arrival their salvation, or something else entirely?”
Prospects #1 is another ridiculously and hilariously sounding going #2 type of read I’m looking forward to, just pure entertainment.
“The town of Ridgeville has been stuck in the middle of a 150 year old battle between two mad scientists, and former colleagues, Edwin Grabowski and Victor Farsimov. Both scientists claim to have figured out the secret of immortality and created armies of zombies and cyborgs using their respective methods. Anyone who shows any bit of potential, be it brains, brawn, or anything in between, will be captured by one of the scientists by the time they are 25 years old. This brings us on to 30 year old Colin Bates, who isn’t one of the prospects. He has been selected by no one, not by the scientists, girls, or even friends. He spends most of his days watching TV in his basement, trying to avoid doing odd jobs for his Grandma and her posse. Yet everything changes when a notorious terrorist, intent on destroying both scientists, appears in Colin’s basement, begging him to take over his legacy.”
Someone watched Kevin Costner’s “Postman” before writing Postmasters #1. Might still be a good read, if the writer delivers something more unique than what we’ve already likely watched! Bonus points if they somehow sneak in Tom Petty into the comic!
It’s a new Cullen Bunn book, the man who has dozens of current titles to his name it seems. Legacy of Violence #1 (of 12) is still worthy of checking out and the cover art for this one I’m digging as well, if the interiors are the same heavy dark ink type of style.
Celebrating Oni’s 25th year, they’re starting off with Letter 44 Oni 25th Anniversary Ed #1 which honestly was a fantastic series and read. This one should be a movie or show already! Great pickup if you’ve never read this one to see if you like.
Divide #1 (of 2) (Cover A – Gordillo) could be interesting. All depends on the writing.
Divide #1 (of 2) (Cover B – Gordillo)
When something gains popularity, it sure does entice all the other creators to follow suit it seems. For fans of… blah blah blah.. Damn Them All #1 (of 6) is a new title from BOOM! that is trying to entice you lovers of SIKTC and We Have Demons.
Damn Them All #1 (of 6) (Cover B – Dani)
Damn Them All #1 (of 6) (Cover C – Foil Adlard)
Damn Them All #1 (of 6) (Cover D – Foil Dani)
Damn Them All #1 (of 6) (Cover J – Bg Variant) Lee
Pulp Bytes #1 is a title I’m in if the artwork on the cover follows suit for the interiors.
Elles #3 (Cover A – Stokart) is a title I highlighted in my recent FOC post. Just gives me “it’s gonna be a show of some type” one day.
Killchella #1 we can only hope is gruesome and bloody good fun. I like a good human sacrifice type of story!
