Every week, tons of new books hit the stands, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are the picks of the week for delivery this Wednesday
Hey Wednesday Warriors, this is the dreaded Fifth Week edition. The Fifth Week is just that, the fifth Wednesday of the month where instead of messing up their publishing schedules, comic companies pump out annuals, one shots, and specials, occasionally there can be good stuff in there. Anyway here is what is up on tap.
New #1’s
Bob Phantom #1 – I love the campiness of the Archie Red Circle superheroes. After failing to aid a dying criminal in order to get a more gripping news story, burgeoning journalist Walter Whitney not only gains national acclaim, but the attention of a ruthless global crime syndicate; now he must go from mild-mannered reporter by day to Bob Phantom, a heartless ambulance chaser and even hardened crime fighter by night. It’s Nightcrawler meets Spider-Man in the brand-new take on a classic Archie universe character!
Planet Hulk Worldbreaker #1 – A thousand years from now on the planet Sakaar, a young woman with green skin searches for the legendary Green Scar to help save her brother from a group of apocalyptic cultists. But which Hulk will she find? And after all these years, is he truly the Sakaarson, who will save us all – or the Worldbreaker, who will destroy us? A shocking expansion and culmination of the mythos of Sakaar and the heart of the Hulks from PLANET HULK
Plush #1 – Serial-killing, cannibalistic furries! PLASTIC and VINYL creators DOUG WAGNER & DANIEL HILLYARD are back. This time, they’ve recruited colorist extraordinaire RICO RENZI for their disturbing ‘neon-horror’ spin on fursuit psychopaths and bizarre love. In PLUSH, Devin Fulcher is coerced into attending his first furry convention. When he accidentally happens upon a group of furries devouring a human, the insanity begins. Do they just want Devin for dinner or something much more wicked?
One and Done
Avengers Assemble Alpha #1 – From throughout time and the far corners of the Multiverse, the Mightiest Heroes of All the Earths are assembling as never before for a battle beyond all imaging. A war that will take us from the prehistoric beginnings of an Earth under assault by the greatest villains who’ve ever lived to the watchtower that stands at the dark heart of the all and the always, where an army of unprecedented evil now rises. The biggest Avengers saga in Marvel history begins now.
Ones to Watch
Wildstorm 30th Anniversary Special #1 – Ton of great covers and first appearance of “City Boy”
Star Wars High Republic Adventures #1 – New Dark Horse Star Wars Series filled with first appearances. Worth stashing one away.
Notable Reprint
Star Wars Visions #1 2nd Ptg – The incredible manga Star Wars tale gets reprinted.
Small Press Pick of the Week
First Seven Days #1 – This small press book genuinely has me intrigued. The puppet on the cover and the vague issue description makes me want to pick this up to see what it is all about. The first video was surely a hoax. Or maybe it wasn’t the first, just the first to go viral.’ In the not too distant future, an event changes the world forever. This comic documents the first seven days of that event.
Pick of the Week
Blue Beetle Graduation Day #1 – Gold Beetle is coming. Could make a cameo here. 1:25 Variant may be a good pick-up if Gold Beetle becomes popular. Spoilers later.
Also, a new villain in Strange Academy Finals 2 (been loving the trading card covers so far) apparently.
First seven days 1 is the hot new comic this week. But hard to imagine high price could be sustained in the long term.
