Every week, tons of new books hit the stands, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are the picks of the week for delivery this Wednesday
What is up Wednesday Warriors? I am beginning to sound like a broken record when it comes to slow weeks, here is what is on tap:
New #1’s
Alligator Loki #1 – Fan favorite version of Loki (from the streaming show) gets his own series.
Avengers Inc #1 – Marvel – Her name is Janet Van Dyne. She’s a hero. She’s a celebrity. She’s hunting a killer. His name is Victor Shade. He’s a villain. He’s an enigma. He just got killed. And together, they’re out to solve every mystery in the Marvel Universe…starting with their own.
Creepshow #1 – New chapter of Creepshow kicks off.
Daredevil #1 – The ninth Daredevil series kicks off with a pricey #1
Kill More #1 – IDW – The city of Colonia is suffering from total economic collapse, but worse than the unemployment and urban decay is the skyrocketing homicide rate. Most of the few cops left on the force think it’s just another symptom of the city’s decline, but one detective has a darker theory…that the most depraved killers in the country have all moved here to take advantage of the chaos. As he and his new partner dig deeper into their rapidly growing list of open cases, they’ll find themselves in the crosshairs of a growing group of maniacs who realize that the best way to stay ahead of the cops in a city full of killers…is to kill more. Nothing can prepare you for Lady Facesmasher, The Sufferer, The Obituary Machine—and worse. Lock your doors and journey into the mouth of madness in a new series
Saint John #1 – Dark Horse – Cynical Manhattan writer Tori Slate travels to Portland, Oregon, to track down the enigmatic Saint John–a masked man who roams the city doing good deeds for strangers, appearing at random and vanishing without a trace. Who is he? Why does he do it? And what is his seemingly supernatural connection to the City of Roses? Tori aims to put these questions to the man himself … unaware that the answers will change her life forever.
Star Trek Picards Academy #1 – a new ongoing series unveiling the past of one of Starfleet’s most celebrated officers: Captain Jean-Luc Picard! Before becoming the Federation’s finest, Jean-Luc was an ordinary student at Starfleet Academy with sights on the stars. His path forward was charted: blow his classmates out of the water on the infamous Evasive Maneuvers exam and graduate early. But there’s a detail Cadet Picard hadn’t factored into his plan: the exam was a group project and he’d need to make friends with, ugh, people if he stood a chance at passing. Federation starships aren’t run by a party of one, after all.
Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi #1 – Adaptation of the Disney+ streaming show
Notable Reprints
Batman #1 Facsimile Edition – Really surprised to see this is the first time DC is doing the facsimile treatment of Batman #1, they are doing a foil and blank as well.
For the Cover
Batman And Robin #1 Stanley Artgerm Lau Cover – Artgerm provides a killer White Rabbit cover.
Madness #2 Punk Rock Homage Cover – Not everyone will appreciate this one, but I love the Cramps Bad Music for Bad People homage. Not only do I love this album, but the artist, Steve Blickenstaff , is a Maryland native. Oh, the comic is also a good read.
One to Watch
Sonic The Hedgehogs 900th Adventure – People like Milestone issues, copies of this book are disappearing off Midtown and TFAW.
Small Press Pick of the Week
Harriet Tubman Demon Slayer #1 – Massive – Harriet Tubman : Demon Slayer, a supernatural comic series based on the true life of the freedom fighter herself that is flavored with genre liberties in the spirit of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Soon to be an original series on Disney+! When slave owners can’t stop the formidable ninja warrior Harriet Tubman, they call on the help of Vampires, Werewolves, Witches, and Demons to stop her.
Pick of the Week
Werewolf By Night #1 – Slow week, this issue featuring WWBN and Elsa Bloodstone gets the top spot, especially the Adam Hughes cover. Supposed to feature a new character as well.
No mention of Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham #1?
That feels like a significant oversight.
A lot of places are getting it this week. It is on this week’s releases.
