Dirty D’s F.O.C. (10/22/23)

NY Comic Con has come and gone. Halloween is a little more than a week away. And this week looks a bit like Bizzaro World, with several Indy’s on the list, no DC books, but the biggest shocker….NO FOILS! Must be a foil cover shortage after NYCC.

Judge These Books By Their Cover

X-Men Blue Origins #1 (E.M. Gist Variant)

Gist does it again. A beautiful Mystique cover this time. Almost has a 70s feel too it. Dirty D’s cover of the week.

Howard the Duck #1 (Skottie Young Variant)

A pretty cool noir cover by Skottie Young. This also promises to be a “what if” type story along the lines of “It’s a Wonderful Life” where a cosmic being (the Peeper) shows Howard what his life could be. So maybe a good read as well.

Star Wars Dark Droids D-Squad #3 (Qt-Kt Variant)

The return of a droid QT-KT (Cutie Katie). A “love interest” of R2-D2? Based on the astromech droid R2-KT which was created to watch over a young girl, Katie Johnson a 7 year old who had terminal brain cancer (and daughter of Albin Johnson, founder of the 501st Legion Costuming group). Since her passing, “KT” visits children’s hospitals and spreads awareness of pediatric illness by attending Star Wars events. The droid has also been the focus of various fundraisers.

Far as I can tell, QT has only appeared once (Star Wars Adventures 12, 2020). So not a first appearance, but a first cover, I believe.

Read’ems

GI Joe a Real American Hero #301

Image is taking over GI Joe (again) and continuing the legacy numbering from IDW (which ended at 300). Apparently one Joe dies in this issue.

I’m not able to confirm this definitively, but I don’t think the continuation GI joe title is set in the energon universe continuity, given Cobra and Duke are getting reboots on their origins in other books in the coming months outside of this title.

Killadelphia #31

Spawn is crossing over into the Killadelphia. I believe there was a teaser cover a few issues back. But now it’s real. A jumping-on point for new readers that promises it will redefine the KILLADELPHIA universe. There are a few variant covers, but I think cover A is best.

Reprints

G.I. Joe a Real American Hero #1 Hama Cut

G. I. Joe a Real American Hero #1 Hama Cut (Cover B)

A reprint of the Marvel Comic issue #1, which restores Larry Hama’s original, unedited dialogue, which has never before seen print. Might be interesting. I like the Cobra “homage” that is cover B also.

Uncanny X-Men #142 Facsimile Edition

I’m a bit surprised that there are no foils by marvel or DC his week. But this one should have been a lock for one. How does marvel put out a foil variant of issue 141 and then decide 142 doesn’t need one? I just don’t get the choices marvel makes sometimes…ok, a lot of the time. This should be a Drek pick (got a better one though), but it’s too good a story and even lower grade originals will cost you more than this fax.

Dirty D’s Pick of the Week!

Incredible Hulk #6

I don’t expect this book to shoot up in price like Hellverine, but it is a slow week (yet again) and there are no Star Wars first appearances to challenge it. 10,000 BC Ghost Rider wasn’t a big hit…but this one looks to have a cool look to him…seems to have some WW1 army gear, although the motorbike looks much more modern. Anyway, he’s referred to as Zombie Ghost Rider, although I feel like there have been zombie ghost riders before…maybe even in Marvel Zombies. Either way, first appearance plus first cover…checking the boxes.

Dirty D’s Drek of the Week.

What is up with DC’s “Holiday Card” variants? Half the front cover is upside down. What am I supposed to do with these? Detach them from the book and fold them? Will the inside cover be blank so I can write a nice letter? Will there be a second cover inside the first to replace what I’ve detached? (That would be kinda cool, actually)

I expect this kind of pointless not-well-thought-out idea from Marvel, but from DC?

Best of all, you know someone will have the ingenious idea to send a copy to cgc and get it slabbed. :joy:

Parting Thoughts

As I said…weird week. Lots of Indy’s in the list and no foils. Not a single DC book either, except the Drek. Bizzaro Week, for sure…have a good one, everybody.
