Welcome to this weeks spec and picks. This is where we pick the winners each week we (or shall I say myself) think will be spec worthy, a great read or just cool looking art on the cover.
Happy Halloween! It’s been since August that I made some picks so I figured I had a moment to share some my picks this week that stand out and grab my attention….
Marvel Picks
Spider-Boy #1 was one of the few hits this past year so far on a speculative perspective. It’s certainly been a slow year. But for those on the Spider-Boy bandwagon, you’ll want his first copy of his own title for sure.
Spider-Boy #1 (JTC Negative Space Variant)
Spider-Boy #1 (Skottie Young Variant)
Spider-Boy #1 (Luciano Vecchio Homage Variant)
Spider-Boy #1 (Chris Campana Variant)
Spider-Boy #1 (Kaare Andrews Foil Variant)
And the ratio variants (still available):
Spider-Boy #1 ((Retailer 50 Copy Incentive Variant) David Aja Variant) – My favorite. This is exactly the type of style this entire comic should be in. Can we get Aja on interiors?
Spider-Boy #1 ((Retailer 100 Copy Incentive Variant) Humberto Ramos Vir Variant)
Venom #27 brings forth a new Black Widow Venom… Doesn’t seem as special since anyone can obtain a symbiote but could still be a long term gamble.
Venom #27 (Pete Woods Knights End Variant)
Venom #27 (Simone Bianchi Variant)
Venom #27 ((Retailer 25 Copy Incentive Variant) Ejikure Variant)
Venom #27 ((Retailer 100 Copy Incentive Variant) Cafu Vir Variant)
White Widow #1 is a new #1 out. Fans of White Widow will be seeking this out.
The White Widow #1 ((Retailer 25 Copy Incentive Variant) Adam Hughes Hidden Gem Variant) is going to be a hit with all the Hughes fans….
Indie and Small Publisher Picks
Canary #1 is a new Snyder book out of Dark Horse. I like the concept and it has potential if Snyder can write like his early glory days. Ignore all the variants for this one, stick with Cover A as in the past, when Dark Horse books heat up, it’s normally regular ‘ol cover A. Plus cover A is like a buck cheaper than the others for some reason.
Here are the available variants though if curious. Some of these are already sold out at Midtown and other retailers I spot checked:
Canary #1 (Dan Panosian Variant Cover)
Canary #1 (Dan Panosian Variant Cover)
Canary #1 (Dan Panosian Variant Cover)
Canary #1 (Dan Panosian Foil Variant Cover)
Canary #1 (Cliff Chiang Variant Cover)
Already selling out at a lot of online shops is Star Wars Hyperspace Stories #10. TFAW is sold out along with Midtown Comics.
Covers got Bad Batch on them which is the likely reason these are selling out. You can still find on eBay for around cover price.
Transformers #1 is getting a bunch of 2nd print covers. I like the first two and I would limit it to just those if I’m buying… You can still find first prints available and it seems the 2nd prints are already sold out at TFAW. And of course you can find plenty more with all the variants from all the store exclusives on eBay.
Transformers #1 (2nd Ptg Cover A – Jason Howard)
Transformers #1 (2nd Ptg Cover B – Jason Howard)
Dying Days #1 is a cool concept. If the writing is good, might be a fun pickup. Red 5 doesn’t heat up often but if they do get any type of demand, most shops don’t go heavy on them.
Faceless and the Family #1 might be promising. It’s got a hefty cover price so retailers likely didn’t or won’t go heavy on it.
