Dirty D’s F.O.C. (3/24/24)

Hello everyone, thanks for stopping buy for another FOC weekend. I’m sorry to say this might be the weakest week I’ve seen in a long time. So much so that I decided not to do a pick of the week as I think all of these books will be readily available if you do decide to skip pre-ordering.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t talk about some cool covers and stories coming up. There’s still plenty to look forward to, so let’s dive in.

Judge There Books By Their Covers

Something Is Killing the Children #36 (FOC Reveal Variant)

Why not kick things off with an FOC reveal variant? I don’t believe I’ve seen Artgerm (Stanley Lau) cover before in this series. He knocks it out of the park with this cover. I’m sure it will be a popular order. This is Dirty D’s Cover-of-the-Week!

Batman Superman Worlds Finest #26 (Logo Foil Variant)

This series has had some hit covers along the way. This month is a Batman/Superman foil logo variant.

Superman #13 (Cover H Sandoval Foil Variant)

This is the other half of the Action Comics 1064 foil that was on FOC last week. So if you grabbed that one you probably want this one too. Not sure I’ve seen connecting foil covers before.

Just The Fax

I’ll have to admit, I’m getting a little tired of all the foil covers…but not when it comes to facsimiles. Especially iconic covers. If I have the original book, it makes for a nice compliment too.

Crisis on Infinite Earths #1 (Facsimile Edition Foil Variant))

This is DC’s answer to Marvel faxing the original Secret Wars limited series. Both were huge 12 issue limited series in the mid-80’s. And if you’ve been collecting comics for any length of time you know both of these series. So we’ll be getting a full year as they release each issue monthly.

Secret Wars Facsimile Edition #5 (Foil Variant)

Speaking of which…Here is issue #5 of Secret Wars. Only 3 more issues to go before the big one! Can’t wait for it to show up on pre-order lists! That red cover is going to be SWEEET.

Notable Reprints

Ghost Rider Final Vengeance #1 (2nd Printing)

How many of you skipped out on the first print of this book because none of the covers featured the Hood as Ghost Rider? I did, totally expecting him show up on the 2nd print. And wow, Marvel made an intelligent decision as to who to put on a reprint cover!

Symbiote Spider-Man 2099 #1 (of 5) (2nd Printing)

…And then there’s Symbiote Spider-man 2099…where it looks to be the same cover as the first print…[eye roll]

Ultimate Universe #1 (2nd Printing)

…And also Ultimate Universe #1…where they also use the same cover as the first print. This one is more than just lazy, it’s a swing and a miss. This issue has the first appearance of Maystorm (preview for the upcoming Ultimate X-Men book)…putting her on the cover would have likely lead to some incredible sales for a $6.99 second printing…but alas, no. I can’t imagine too many shops are going to order these with that price point.

Ultimate X-Men #1 (3rd Printing)

I’m not so sure this book demands a 3rd printing…still first prints on the shelf at my shop. At least it’s different cover art.

Indy Spotlight

Blow Away #1 (of 5)

Unyielding wildlife photographer Brynne Brautigan, isolated in the remote cold of Baffin Island, sees something she can’t unsee. An argument, followed by an outburst of intense violence between two nearby climbers-did she just witness a murder? In a frantic search for the truth, Brynne discovers just what she’s looking for, but little does she know that more than the silent white of winter is keeping her company…

Boom! brings a neo-noir crime thriller rife with murder and paranoia, in the tradition of Fargo and Rear Window. You can read a few pages in previews to get a sense of the art and story. There’s also a trailer by Boom! on YouTube.

Honorable Mentions

No Pick-of-the-Week. But I did want to take some time to point out a couple books that are likely to be good reads and maybe a big reveal or new character.

Star Wars Darth Maul Black White & Red #1

A prison ship – transporting a cult known as the Final Occultation – goes offline, and Darth Maul is sent by Palpatine to investigate. What he finds on board is the stuff of nightmares!!! It’s up to him to stop this profoundly dark and unstable force that wishes to bring chaos to the galaxy.

Not sure when this takes place, but I’m assuming pre-Phantom Menace…hard to say because he and Palpatine died so many times…but they had a falling out (pun intended) after the first movie. Showing cover A, but pick the cover you like best.

“Who is the Green Goblin” – Peter Parker’s secret life starts fraying the edges of his personal life! J. Jonah Jameson and Ben Parker’s pursuit of truth – or, at least, the news – stirs unrest with the world at large… And now that Spider-Man may not have to operate alone, the real work of rebuilding this corrupt world can begin!

I prefer the A covers in this series, but I have to point out of few things in this cover. Mainly Harry’s tie, and Gwen’s blouse. Green and Purple…the Goblin’s colors. This is not coincidence…both of these two are involved in the Goblin’s business…and this issue we may find out how much. So another one to look out for.

Parting Thoughts

And that’s it for this week! Not the most exciting, but maybe there will be some surprises in store upon release. Have a great weekend!

  1. You say every week is light, or weak. Go back through your archives. It’s getting old.

    1. Except the week’s I don’t think are a light week. For spec purposes, they really have been a light week. But I can just skip making commentary on the week.
