Comic Picks of the Week for Delivery 9/4/24

Every week, tons of new books hit the stands, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are the picks of the week for delivery this Wednesday

What is up Wednesday Warriors? Another slow week, make sure to keep an eye out in shops for recent hits including Grommets #1’s and #2’s while you are out, but note the second prints come out today. These books have helped keeps sales alive for me.

New Series
Autumn Kingdom #1 – Bestselling author Andrew Kier found the perfect place to finish his latest dark-fantasy novel-an idyllic, remote cabin on the edge of a lush Swedish forest. His young daughters, Sommer and Winter, gleefully explore . . . until they happen upon a strange clearing of ancient statues: goblins, dwarves, elves, and a warrior queen mysteriously missing her swordhand and weapon. When something sinister follows the girls home and viciously snatches their parents in the night, the sisters’ only hope may be that ancient relic, lost in the forest underbrush, waiting for a new champion to take it up . . .

Dark Empty Void #1 – Scientists have created a stable, microscopic black hole in a secret underground compound, but when they lose control, the black hole spews out a cosmic maelstrom, strange dangerous creatures, and most surprisingly…a mysterious human teenage girl. Now, a depressed but brilliant psychologist must help her estranged husband and the other scientists solve the mystery and close the black hole before it consumes all of Earth. Dare to witness a cosmic horror series that will amaze and terrify you, with hit comic creator Zack Kaplan

Duck And Cover #1 – Scott Snyder’s new book. One part cold war atomic bomb disaster one part War of the Worlds.

Exceptional X-Men #1 – Three new Mutants appear. After the fall of Krakoa, Kate Pryde is trying to get as far away from all things X as she possibly can. She’s just a regular-degular bartender now. Definitely NOT getting ready to head up an ALL-NEW TEAM of wayward young mutants while avoiding the watchful gaze of Emma Frost. Nothing in this title but work, dating and staving off depression. That’s it. No never-before-seen EXCEPTIONAL X-MEN to see here!

Plastic Man No More #1 – Eel O’Brian might be a superhero now–but before he was anything else, he was a crook. Until the accident that turned him into the pliable Plastic Man, Eel was bad to the bone…and just because he no longer has bones doesn’t mean that’s not still true. When an incident on a Justice League mission leads to catastrophic cellular damage, Plastic Man discovers he just might be out of time to make amends for the past he’s tried hard to outrun–or to save the soul of his son, who (unfortunately for him) might have inherited more from dear old Dad than just his superpowers…

Marvel Zombies Dawn Of Decay #1 – New Marvel Zombies series.

One and Done
Marvel & Disney What If Donald Duck Became Thor #1 – Marvel and Disney continue their fun mashups.

For the Cover

Batman #152 Nicola Scott Batman 85th Anniversary Cover – Ha, Adam West Batman in a Dark Knight homage.

Ones to Watch
Ultimates #4 – supposed to tie in to the potential RDJ Dr. Doom on screen, at least that’s what the rumor say. Flipped through it yesterday (need a deeper read), Dr. Doom trying to create the Fantastic Four.

Spider-Boy #11 – With Spider-Girl appearing next issue, expect a cameo or a civilian identity to appear.

Notable Reprints
Detective Comics #400 Facsimile Edition – Classic Neal Adams Batman cover and the first appearance of Man Bat.

Small Press Pick of the Week
Minor Arcana #1 – Theresa, the daughter of a small-town “psychic” fraud, returns home to care for her ailing mother, however begrudgingly. But when Theresa discovers that there may be more to the magic than she originally believed, she’ll find herself caught up in a town that desperately needs her help… One of the most renowned creators in comics, New York Times bestselling and award-winning writer and artist Jeff Lemire (Descender, Black Hammer) arrives at BOOM! Studios with an extra-length opening chapter of a must-read ongoing series inspired by, and intricately linked to, the tarot and perfect for fans of his creator-owned work as well as Helen of Wyndhorn and Locke & Key.

Pick of the Week
Star Wars The High Republic Adventures Phase III Echoes Of Fear #1 – Star Wars spec is ice cold, but in a lower week the first appearance of new Sith, Darth Ravi, is worth storing one away.
