Dirty D’s F.O.C. (2/23/25)

Hey CHU fans. This week’s FOC picks are pretty cover heavy. Getting this typed up late, so just going to dive in!

COVERS

Spears isn’t sneaking up on anyone anymore. That doesn’t mean his Monsters covers aren’t worth picking up. Pick your favorite, but I like a good Killing Joke homage. Dirty D Cover of the Week!

Below are some of the rest of the open order covers for Monsters this week worth highlighting.

Mark Spears Monsters #4 (ASM #300 Homage)

Batman Superman Worlds Finest #37 (Guy Fieri Variant)

“…featuring a very special celebrity cameo variant from the mayor of Flavortown himself.”

I don’t know if Guy Fieri is actually in the book…you can’t cameo on a cover. I don’t know if it even matters…but sometimes these celebrity variant covers get hot…I’m not seeing that here but you never know…

Amazing Spider-Man #70

ENTER THE SPIDER-NAUT! But who is this unstoppable webbed-wonder?!

New character? Friend or foe? I don’t know. But he’s on cover A. I like firsts with cover appearances. This is also the last issue before the title reboots with a new #1. Release date of 3/26.

Speaking of reboots, ASM # 1 comes out 2 weeks after issue #70 above (3/9). And it also promises a first appearance of a new character, who is featured on this cover.

NETEASE RIVALS VARIANTS

Here are this weeks Marvel Rivals variants worth noting.

Dooms Division #1 (of 5) (Netease Marvel Rivals Variant)

As agents of the National Intelligence Service under White Fox, they’re ordered to uphold the new world order – with the help of some new team members!

Tiger Division becomes Dooms Division. Not sure if these new members are new characters.

Incredible Hulk #23 (Netease Marvel Rivals Variant)

JUST THE FAX

Another issue in the Hush storyline getting the fax treatment. Most of these issues can be purchased for less than the facsimile price…at least foil is something different.

Star Wars 1977 #1 (Facsimile Edition Foil Variant)

Not sure how this will look in foil, but for an iconic cover I’m willing to check it out.

NEW NO. 1’s

Here are some new first issues from the Big 2. Bound to have some first appearances scattered within.

Without the mentor…without the family…without the Speed Force, what’s left is the Absolute Scarlet Speedster!

Next up in the Absolute-Verse is the Flash.

Without the Corps…without the ring…without the willpower, what’s left is the Absolute Green Lantern!

2 weeks later is Absolute Green Lantern!

The most elite DEADPOOLs across the Multiverse assemble, and they need the 616’s Deadpools. But will Wade (with Ellie’s help) prove himself worthy of the Pooluminati? And even if he does…will the conspiracy theory they uncover spell disaster for ‘Pools everywhere?

So many Deadpools. There’s bound to be a few new ones. Do you spot any on this cover?

INDY SPOTLIGHT

Years after Peter Pan’s adventures with Wendy Darling, the boy who wouldn’t grow up is now the last one in Neverland still clinging to his adventurous youth. Meanwhile in London, Wendy also yearns for childhood and its freedom from responsibility as she rails against the transition to adulthood and her family’s expectations.

As their desires create a mirror of fantasy and reality, a disastrous encounter with the aging Captain Hook becomes the catalyst for Peter’s realization that Neverland is growing up without him. But will the two of them find each other once again to carry on their age-old adventures… or is this truly the final threshold of their adolescence in this modern take on a classic tale?

There’s a little Peter Pan in all of us (as we still read comic books…). A new and interesting take on Peter Pan’s aging out of Neverland.

Convicts Frank Morris and Clarence Anglin have washed ashore in San Francisco after surviving their infamous escape from Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary in June 1962. They soon meet their gruff and disappointed handler, a mysterious young woman who’s also running from something, and hope to quickly get their way north to the border-if they can even make it out of Modesto alive. As a dogged federal manhunt and chance encounters threaten the desperate convicts, everyone involved is about to discover the same bloodstained truth: life on the run is an even more hellish prison than Alcatraz could have ever been!

I like that the artist’s name is “Crook.” I also like the classic 50s/60s style cover. Crime buffs may like this book.

Cutler Carlton is the Dreamweaver! At least, he was, until he grew too old to handle a magical threat from his past. That’s when he transferred his powers of illusion to the much younger Bella Howard, and in the process, wrecking both of their lives in unforeseen ways! This one-shot will be perfect bound & feature a cardstock cover.

Part of Syzygy Publishing’s lineup of titles at Image Comics. The dark fantasy one-shot explores how magic is passed from one person to another, and how acquiring magical powers can be a curse rather than a gift.

Parting Thoughts

Well, that’s all for this week. No Pick of the Week…Although the Spears covers are pretty sweet must haves, IMO.

Have a great week!
