It’s the beginning of April break, and I’m on vacation with the family. So going to keep this intro a bit short as I’m short on time…so let’s dive in to this week’s FOC books of note.
COVERS
Some Dan Mora B covers from the past Batman and Superman Family of titles have been heating up lately. Although it’s hard to predict which ones and why, I do think this one is nice, likely will be low orders, and thus has some future potential. I love the city backdrop too. I may just grab a copy in case I run into Mora at a convention.
Gwenpool #1 (Jee Hyung Lee Variant)
This all pink cover helps it stand out from the pack.
Pop Kill #3 (Adam Hughes Variant)
I think I’d hear it from a lot of CHU folk if I didn’t highlight this cover. It will be heavily ordered, though.
FIRST APPEARANCES
Yes, Hellverine has had a cover appearance. Yes his “image” made an appearance at the end of issue #5…albeit as a still image on someone’s tablet screen…
But this will be the first in story, and hopefully we’ll get a Hellverine/hell hulk battle. If anything, this cover is fantastic (let’s just call it the Dirty D Cover of the Week!). Would love an homage of Hulk 181 though (imagine if a store picked that up as a con exclusive…?)
SPIDER-MAN’s first task as spider-god Anansi’s herald? BATTLE TO THE DEATH against Anansi’s ancient enemy, ARES, GOD OF WAR! HERCULES may lend Miles his strength against his old foe, but Team Spider-Man is going to need a lot more muscle if they hope to best Ares’ own champions. Introducing War-Cry, Philomelus, demigod of earth, and Pyrrah, demigoddess of water!
I haven’t been reading or following this series, but the solicitation indicates this will be the first appearance of two new characters. And they look as if they are both in cover A.
SPEAR ME
The next issue of Mark Spears epic Monsters series is on FOC this week. You know the drill by now…likely none of these will have much spec value, so pick your favorites for your PC. Cover D (New Mutants 98 Homage) does come polybagged with a trading card…and rumor has it there might be different card randomly inserted….Also, Lunar doesn’t appear to be offering cover E (Girl with Snake Tatoo), so just be aware in case that makes a difference to you.
REPRINTS
The Brave & the Bold #57 Facsimile Edition (Foil Variant)
First Metamorpho gets the Fax treatment. Foil cover might look nice with the purple.
IMAGE FIRSTS
Bounty hunter Akeldama “Blood” Bledsoe and her cantankerous talking gun Thunder are the best out there at bringing in the bad guys. However, when the galaxy’s most dangerous criminal breaks out of prison, Blood’s hunt delivers her down a path that will unlock secrets about her past, present, and future…and that’s when things get REALLY BAD. An all-new action epic set in the near future where Earth has integrated alien species into a new society—meaning there’s a whole new set of rules…and a whole load of new crimes to solve.
Seems to be some buzz around this book at FOC. Who doesn’t like a punk rock girl with a super sized bazooka?!
The first completely free planet in human history has won its independence. Now, a group of revolutionary heroes must defend the planet’s unique energy source from a pair of hostile intergalactic powers while determining what complete freedom actually entails. A blend of the intricate future history of EAST OF WEST with the emotional space opera stylings of SAGA in a story about freedom and the sacrifices it demands.
Seemed different. Maybe worth a read of the first issue.
Parting Thoughts.
No pick of the week or drek. Just good stories and covers all around. Enjoy!
