A look ahead to next Wednesday 9/25/13

Last week of the DC 3d Villains covers, and this is supposed to be the most allocated. The big one is obviously Joker’s Daughter. It has pre-sold for as much as $100+. Get them and flip them. Do not hold on. Buy back later when they are cheaper. Here is what else to look forward to next Wednesday that may fly under the radar.

1. Arcane Secrets #2 from Amigo. Fun all ages Lovecraftian book from my favorite new publisher, Amigo. The also publish the great horror book Westwood Witches and Rogues. Small print runs with fantastic quality story and art.

2. Chin Music #3 Tony Harris art should not be missed. I did think the coloring was weak on number 2, but number 2 features an early preview of Pretty Deadly. The story is good, and Harris’ art is fantastic. The story is a Lovcraftian (have been hearing that a lot in this post huh?) Noir story. Gangsters and elder gods.

3. Clive Barker’s Next Testament #4 Fantastic story from Boom! Series created by Clive Barker.

4. Dark Horse Presents #28 This is for The Strain fans. This issue features a short set in The Strain world. The Strain has beed my favorite horror book for the past year now.

5. John Carpenter’s Asylum #3 Yet another horror book, a fantastic one at that, by a major name in he horror industry. These books have had a tiny print run.

There are a ton of new books coming out, and this is just a sample for the week. Please feel free to hit us up in the comment section and let us know what you are looking forward to this week.

  1. IMPORTANT HIJACK:

    This is a little bit of information regarding the 3D covers from DC. HOW MANY OF THE 3D COVERS (per title) ACTUALLY HIT THE STREET? All I’ve heard were retailers saying that they ‘DIDN’T GET THEIR ALLOCATION’!

    Anyway, if someone can get a firm print run on these things it would be helpful. After reading the below ‘blurb’ from an online source, I got to thinking that maybe DC did screw the pooch on this whole 3D cover thing, and just weren’t ABLE to produce very many of these covers per title?

    Love it or hate it, you have to admit DC comics’ newest marketing campaign has produced some absolutely stunning lenticular 3D motion covers. Also known as “Villain’s Month”, DC has issued 52 different covers (13 a week for 4 weeks) featuring the most popular villains in the DC Universe. Villains such as The Joker, The Riddler, Mr Freeze, The Penquin, Zod, Lobo, Harley Quinn, and even a new one…The Joker’s Daughter, plus many more all showcased brilliantly on these beautiful 3D lenticular covers. However, as well as DC knocked it out of the park on creating these striking covers, they dropped the ball on production and distribution. They simply did not or could not produce enough to meet the incredible demand these books are drawing. You see, DC had to have retailer’s orders months in advance and based their allocation of certain books, such as Dial-E and Mr Freeze, on orders of under-performing titles, which led to low production of said books, ie: making them rare. As a result, retailers received significantly less inventory than what they were expecting, 30%-70% less. That’s a big deal. Most of the books sold out instantly. DC stance was that they ran out of the plastic used in the production of these special covers and were not able to produce the quantity to meet the demand. DC has stated that they will be producing ALL 52 of the 3D villain covers (plus the Forever Evil #1) as a set to be released in December for those who weren’t able to get these spectacular covers. HOWEVER, they will be released as SECOND editions and will be labeled as such on the front cover.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    So, if anyone would like to try and figure out a print run for these covers, be my guess! My personal opinion is that these 3D covers MAY actually be fairly rare when it’s all said and done. I’m sure DC will get their act together by December, AND ABSOLUTELY FLOOD THE MARKET WITH THE 2ND PRINTINGS OF THESE THINGS, but that is exactly why I’m saying the 1st prints – when it’s all said and done, will be EXTREMELY hard to find by December!
    As a case in point, here’s a quick EBAY link, indicating the ‘HOTNESS’ of the 3D Joker’s Daughter…PRE-RELEASE!
    NJOY!
    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=3d+joker+daughter&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0&_nkw=3d+joker+daughter&_sacat=0
    The way I gauge ‘supply/demand’ in this industry is:
    Everyone knows that EBAY will be the landing spot for 99.9999999999% of all of the 3D covers. So, to spotlight the 3D Joker’s Daughter…there are currently 133 listings on EBAY (that’s the link I’ve posted) right now, so if you take out all of the ridiculous BIN prices there…ok, let’s say there are now 120 ‘bid’ auctions for the 3D JD. So, if you look at it this way…only one person will win each of those auctions…true…but, if you were to calculate the number of actual bids (COMBINED) for the 120 auctions displayed…let’s just say for s & g’s there are 10 bids per auction (some actually have over 30…)…someone can actually count them if they want, but my point is: 10 bids per auction X 120 auctions = 1200 BIDS!
    Well, the way I see it, EVERY bid represents someone who REALLY, REALLY wants a 3D Joker’s Daughter Cover, yea, so to me, if they don’t win ‘that’ auction, they will find another auction, and bid on that one, and so on, and so on, until every one of those 1200 ‘bidders’ have their copy of 3D JD.
    Now, what I’m saying is: do you really think there are enough copies of 3D JD’s out there to supply just the 1200 ‘bidders’ that are represented here in this little ‘experimental’ display…2 DAYS BEFORE RELEASE?
    AND, the more people miss out on their specific auction, they will be willing to bid higher, and higher on the next auction, and the next auction, UNTIL THEY GET THEIR COPY! And of course, AFTER THE RELEASE DATE, you will definitely see the prices skyrocket! But, do you actually see there being 10 times as many EBAY auctions as there are right now…JUST TO MEET THE DEMAND? OVER 1200 AUCTIONS FOR 3D JD ON EBAY..NOPE, I DON’T SEE THAT HAPPENING! Don’t forget, it is believed that OVER 70% OF THE RETAILERS ‘DIDN’T GET THEIR ALLOCATIONS’……..IF THEY DIDN’T GET THEM, THEY(THE BOOKS) AREN’T OUT THERE…PERIOD!
    So, in theory (or did we just prove it) THERE WILL NEVER BE ENOUGH OF THESE BOOKS TO SUPPLY THE DEMAND…I JUST DON’T THINK THERE ARE ENOUGH BOOKS OUT THERE FOR IT….PERIOD!
    So, if I DO get copies LIKE I PLAN TO on Wednesday, I’M ON A HOLDING PATTERN UNTIL AT LEAST DECEMBER, WHEN THE 2ND PRINTINGS COME OUT…THAT’S WHEN EVERYONE WILL REALLY, REALLY, REALLY WANT A 1ST PRINTING COPY…THEN IT’S ‘COME TO PA’PA TIME…….’!
    Print run data anyone?????????
    @COMICFLIPPER, sorry for taking up all of your blog-space…just got on a roll there!
  2. – I don’t get it…
    – Hoknes states he’s 99.5% sure there are plenty of 3d copies.
    – If these are really rare, we shouldn’t be selling them just yet…so what do we do? Anyone?
    1. @COMIC LORD, Me personally, like I stated earlier, I’m on a holding pattern for the time being! The demand is WAYYYYYYYY too high right now to be selling. Just like I held onto my X2 1st print VF+/NM Peter Panzerfaust #1’s…now look on EBAY!
      Yea, but if you want to take your cash now, THERE SEEMS TO BE PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITY FOR IT FOR SURE!
      Good luck to all, whatever you decide to do…GOTTA GET SOME FIRST!
  3. The first 2 weeks had plenty of covers to go around at my shop but last week they got heavily allocated. If this trend continues this week I think they will get even less. So I really don’t know how rare or un-rare these books really are. It’s a mystery to me. Only one I’m looking for is of course Jokers Daughter 3D cover and the 2D. Good luck to everyone this Wednesday but I’m not getting my hopes high on this one.
    1. I don’t think these books are that rare and will eventually fizzle off. What we are seeing is people who usually don’t collect as much come out of the cracks for them. My usual shop, there’d only be about 2-3 people waiting usually on Wednesday mornings to pick up their weekly comics but with these 3D covers, it seems there’s been about 10-18 people waiting for the doors to open, most I’ve never seen. They’re phone is constantly ringing too and all you hear is, nope, we don’t have any of those 3D left.. etc. 😉
    1. Going to make a UKpondside comment section. I appreciate your thread jacks though and am sure others do as well. I know that seller. He has participated on this site in the past.
  4. Hahahhaha I appreciate you and your hard work COMICFLIPPER!
    THREAD JACK:
    I just picked up a NM copy of Ghost Projekt #1 from a UK online shop for 1.49GBP (Approx 3 bucks). I haven’t done any research on this title yet, so this purchase is purely based on your spek @Sammy SoSo!
    Thanks!
  5. GOOD STUFF! I have my 2 (or 3…I have to check) copies of the Obama ‘shoot-um-up’ cover coming my way as we speak! I think I also ordered 15 copies of the reg cover from a UK supplier, but I’ve been chasing this dang JD 3d cover so much, I’VE LITERALLY LOST TOUCH WITH REALITY!!!
    The same supplier who got my Obama cover for me, just emailed and said that he had 2 copies of the 3d JD, but he had a look on EBAY and noticed they are going ‘for a fair bit’….DANGIT! I hate it when sellers actually ‘KNOW’ what they have….hahahhahhhhahahahhahahahahahhahaa! Anyway, he asked me how much I’m willing to pay for them…WHAT DO YOU THINK COMMUNITY? What is this 3d JD cover worth to a true SPECULATOR? Obviously, I wouldn’t pay ANYTHING near what they are going for on EBAY, as I will eventually be wanting the profit from EBAY, so what say ye?
    Anyway, I’ll check to see exactly what I have in regards to The Other Dead.
    I REALLY, REALLY HOPE TO FIND A ‘MOTH’ IN MY OTHER DEAD – OBAMA COMICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
