Thanks to Alana for this. She has been dropping back issue pickups on is for a while now that blow us away. She is always scouring the Internet for awesome back issues.
This weekend specs will be short and sweet. A little Thor, a little Dr. strange, and a already discussed X-men spec. Also we won’t leave DC out this week as I have one good spec with DC tv and movie implications. So get those eyes and fingers ready for some back issue bin searching this weekend and let’s jump in.
All kinds of confirmations for Thor 3 today. Biggest is the Villain Hela.
Journey into Mystery #102 1st Hela and 1st Sif. Picked this up myself a couple weeks ago on Hela rumors, I mentioned at that time it was a safe bet because even if Hela didn’t show in the movie this issue still contains 1st Sif and will retain what you pay for it. Now Hela is confirmed time to get on this issue while there are still some to be found for cheap below $50.
Journey into Mystery #1031st Enchantress, 1st Executioner. Thought I would be writing this up for Enchantresses 1st appearance but nope let’s talk Executioner. Executioner is also confirmed for Thor 3 today being played by Karl Urban. This book can be pricey due to the Enchantress 1st appearance but can still be found in a low grade for $50. Also Valkyrie will be appearing in this film so who knows if she turns evil and becomes Enchantress at some point in the flick I doubt it but could happen.
Avengers #69 1st Grandmaster Jeff Goldblum will be playing the Grandmaster in Thor 3. Found two copies on Amazon for $4.50 +$4 shipping. Find it cheap in the back issue bins.
Avengers #83, Hulk #142, Defenders #4 1st Valkyrie. Yes three first appearances for 3 different characters that play Valkyrie. Avengers #83 is 1st Valkyrie but this is Amora in disguise. Hulk #142 is first Samantha as Valkyrie, Defenders #4 1st Brunnhilde as Valkyrie.
Now on to some Dr. Strange news. Reported from Latino Review found on the IMDb.
Hot dispatch from the rumor mill – we were contacted by a source close to Doctor Strange with a character name for Mad Mikkelsen’s character. I was hoping that it would be “Kaecilius,” because that is what I had been telling all of you for awhile and – Boom – that was the name that we got.
Who knows how on we were with the whole sub-atomic particles and general breakdown of how Doctor Strange plays out in the first and second acts, but knowing that Kaecilius and his followers show up in the film from this report and the trailer, I’m feeling pretty good about the direction Doctor Strange is moving in.
Of course, the new question is how much will this Kaecilius have in common with the comic book version of Kaecilius who is a disciple of Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor’s character). Not a lot about Mordo has been officially revealed.
Strange Tales #130 If this info is right Kaecilius first appeared in this book, it’s that Beatles appearance issue. This also means that the main Villain is in no way revealed in trailers yet, as Kaecilius and Mordo both appear to be good guys that will be perhaps turned evil by the end of the movie.
Strange Tales #126 1st Clea 1st Dormammu. With the addition of Hela to Thor 3 Dormammu is even more the front runner to be the villain of the Strange movie. Could still be Mephisto but to be honest I don’t know where his movie rights are. He could be a property of Fox that came along with Silver Surfer and Galactus and not usable in the MCU so Dormammu is the safe bet, there will be a trilogy of Dr. strange films so Clea and Dormammu are bound to show.
As Anthony already posted recently Mr. Sinister looks to be making his way to the X-Men film universe. I think he will be in multiple movies like Gambit, Wolvie 3, future X-Men X-Force films.
X-Men #221 Sinisters 1st appearance can probably still be found in the wild for about $5. 5x-10x that on eBay.
Not to leave DC out this week I would recommend everyone picks up Crisis on Infinite Earths #1-12 1985. This is not only going to play out in the DC movie universe as we have already seen clips of this in Batman v Superman, but will be a big part of the coming seasons of Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow. This also contains a slew of first appearances like Anti-Monitor and the deaths of Flash and Supergirl.
That will do it for this week have a great weekend and happy back issue hunting.

A couple of side notes Avengers #69 is 1st appearance of Squadron Sinister and 1st appearance of Hyperion.
Mephistopheles is in the first Ghost Rider film, they never call him Mephisto and he only appears in human form never in his comic likeness. He plays Mephisto’s role in Ghost Rider but is considered a different character. The character is credited as Mephistopheles not Mephisto. Leading one to think there’s a reason they couldn’t use the name Mephisto and his likeness in Ghost Rider.
Wonderful post! Thank you as always for the research. Wasn’t Defenders 4 the first appearance of Barbara Norris as Valkyrie?
Yes thanks for the correction Brunnhilde as Valkyrie would be Defenders #109 Defenders #4 would be Barbara
Nice list as always. Will go digging for some journey into mystery later today. Again thanks for a great list.
Always enjoy your list! I do think Valkyrie will gain a lot of interest moving forward. So many different versions but it seems Avengers #83 is the one to get…for now anyway. Just in case I picked up a few of them last year. One nice and the other two just so-so, but they were cheap. I did pick up a higher grade Defenders #4 for a good price because of your list! Hope is sees some movement but it still has an awesome cover regardless what it does!
Watched the new Xmen film it may just be the worst Marvel film ever close second to the last Fantastic Four movie. I don’t know what the flick suffers from more…. bad costume design, bad acting, lack of any comic continuity or timeline continuity. 4/10. 2 points for Quicksilver he steals the show again, 1 point for Jean, and 1 point for some cool Easter eggs. The rest of the film falls flat and boring.
Do you see prices falling on the Apocalypse books because of it? Is it that bad that people are going to dump?
I would say to dump any extra X-factor #6 and #24 I don’t see #6 going any higher. Hold Wolverine #80, X-men #221, X-men #101
Weapon X’s head gear might as well of been my daughters bike helmet painted silver had no visor looked like one of those old 80’s laser tag helmets. Apocalypse looked just like the first test photo of him horrible! I thought they redid him and fixed his appearance, but nope looked more like a power ranger villain then anything closely resembling Apoc.
Red Box in four months here I come!
I personally don’t know how much interest Valkyrie will generate, but if she heats up at all, watch out for the Fearless Defenders 1 1:50 Manara variant.
It really depends on how they use her. If she is in some big scenes and kicks some behind her early appearances will move. If it is just little more than a cameo it won’t go too far.
