Greg Rucka's Black Magick has been optioned for a TV show

The hits keep on coming. This time, Greg Rucka’s Black Magick, the witch cop drama comic from Image comics has been optioned for TV.
We have been praising this one since it came out. Such an odd blend of horror elements and cop drama. Prices for the first issue of Black Magick are still cheap. There were three covers for this one, and A, a B, and a Magazine Sized cover that Greg Rucka seems to like. The print run on #1 was 22,748 which seems to be split between the three covers, my guess is the Magazine Sized one will be the smallest printed of the three. You can also find all three covers here. Amazon has copies for under $2 each, but do not expect them to last.

From The Hollywood Reporter

Eisner Award-wining author Greg Rucka and illustrator Nicola Scott’s Image Comics title Black Magick is being developed for the small screen, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Michael London’s Groundswell Productions (The Illusionist) has landed the rights to the comic following a multiple-party bidding war and plans to develop the property as an hourlong cable or streaming drama.
Black Magick, first published in April,is described as a gritty thriller about witchcraft and crime. The comic centers on Rowan Black, a robbery-homicide detective in the fictional port city of Portsmouth, USA, itself a cauldron of occult mystery. She is also the latest in a long line of witches stretching back for millennia. For years, Rowan has struggled to keep a balance between her two lives, but the past is finally catching up to her. Peculiar and mysterious murders draw Rowan into an investigation where the lines between her two lives continue to erode, where she is left with no choice but to harness her powers to not only save the people she loves, but to preserve a future for all humanity.

Thanks to Brian Springman and Kevin H. for the assist.

    1. I bought and flipped a few of the magazine version of Black Magick as soon as it came out, didn’t make much. I saw the Van Helsing spec when it was teased and got a few of those #0’s. Glad I didn’t go too crazy, though, because newer reports are making it sound like it isn’t based on Zenescope’s character; that Zenescope is more acting as a “creative consultant” in some kind of detached capacity. It doesn’t sound like any kind of “sure thing” anymore, and may not actually have anything at all to do with the character in their comics. Meanwhile, it’s still a shame that they never got their version of Wonderland on TV. They were poking at it for years, but now I’m figuring it’s caput. And there’s still not word on whether the series itself is over altogether, or if they are planning some kind of reboot. Wonderland & Grimm Fairy Tales are both ending next month!

      1. Wow. Did not know that about the books ending. I read the first 5 of Grimms fairy tales and picked up a bunch over the years. Ended up selling the hell out of them like two years back b

    1. This is one of the books that I have been really into for a while. It always shows up on my returning favorite part of the weekly pics. It’s a really good book I hope more people will check it out now

      1. I gave up on Rucka after he left a really bad after taste with Veil.. which was such a horrible horrible book.. so bad.. really, so bad.

  1. Abandoned the series after 4 issues and sold it off… Not my best move :/
I did keep my magazine size #1 though, so that’s a relief 🙂

    1. I liked it enough to keep it going. Found a stack of #1’s just roached out at a lcs by my office. Told the guy about the option and he pulled them off the shelf. Look out for “vf” copies on eBay.

  2. Snagged a bunch of #1s from eBay as soon as I heard the news… Looks like eBay is cleaned out of cheap copies now…. I’m just going to throw these in a box and and forget about them… Unless of course some of them look like 9.8 candidates…. -the whale

    1. Kip?
Hope there is a second comic series, by someone other than Rucka. And as good as Scott is, bring Frank Cho onboard. A guy can dream…

  3. Collected the entire series, mostly due to the occult premise. Got the Mag variant as well, was pretty satisfied with it all. My only regret is that it is by that totalitarian swine Rucka. Hopefully it heats up pretty good though…

    1. I have been trying to find my copies of that. Still need to list the #1’s I picked up over the weekend.
