Poyo's Picks for November 16th, 2016

It’s that time again, the day we all wait for each week, new comic book Wednesday.
Is it me or does it seem like since Image claimed they were going to boost their #1 prints to avoid 2nd, 3rd and beyond printings.. we’ve seen more number ones go to 2nd and 3rd printings? Just doesn’t add up if you ask me.
You all will be so proud of me, I started attempting to catch up on my readings and I actually made a slight dent. I’m caught up with some Marvel reads and also Amazing Spider-Man so I could read Clone Conspiracy, which I can honestly say, art is great, story is meh. It’s not terrible but can we officially say Gwen Stacy has been revived? She’s suppose to stay dead dammit. Anyways.. I’ll hold my rants for characters that should stay dead for later, let’s get on with the picks, my picks, the stuff I’m gonna tell you to pick up to buy, read or flip, or whatever it is you do with your comic books..

DC/Vertigo Pick

Trinity #3 (DC) Steve Epting Cover B – I’m picking this solely for the cover alone because I like Steve Epting’s art. It also helps that nothing else really hits the stands this week for DC or Vertigo.
Marvel Pick

Thanos #1 (Marvel) – I read this is an ongoing title, so I hope it lasts for more than 4 issues cause that seems to be around the normal issue range for ongoing titles at Marvel nowadays. But I love Thanos, yes I do. He’s probably up there in top 5 favorite villain lists of all time, at least for me. With Jeff Lemire writing along with Deodato art, this is destined to be good. We can only hope at least.
Indie Pick of the Week

Ether #1 (Dark Horse) – Dark Horse has been silently killing it lately. For me they seemed to go cold after The Strain ended but lately with hits like Black Hammer, Dept H., Briggs Land and Lady Killer back (which I think we can honestly say is back due to “we demanding it”).. they seem to be getting back in the game. Now enter another new series by Matt Kindt.
“A science-minded adventurer gets mixed up in the mysteries of a fantasy world in this charming new adventure from an award-winning creative team. Boone Dias is an interdimensional explorer, a scientist from Earth who has stumbled into great responsibility. He’s got an explanation for everything, so of course the Ether’s magical residents turn to him to solve their toughest crimes. But maybe keeping the real and the abstract separate is too big a job for just one man.”
So there you have it, this weeks picks. I wish I didn’t have to narrow them down because there’s so many other great books hitting the shelves.

  1. Poyo I’ve also noticed this surge in multiple printings for image. Didn’t they also state they were anti variants!? Seems like they’re putting out more and more multiple covers lately *cough*Reborn*cough*
I’m putting my foot down and only getting the B cover with the awesome monster by Capullo

    1. They’ve claimed they were anti-variants with different ratios and store exclusive variants. So they’re pushing their own and then every so often you see that 1:50 or 1:100 variant they put out. I think it’s mostly Eric Stephenson who is anti-variant and hates people speculating or making money from comics on the secondary market.
He truly doesn’t understand that secondary markets are what push the primary markets, they do more good than harm. If a book gets hot and it’s the secondary market that is causing more people to seek out and buy them, that’s only going to turn into more issues from that title to be ordered, thus pushing the overall publishing numbers up, thus making the writers and publishers more money. So Eric Stephenson, although is a great writer and comic book creator, should stop worrying about the secondary market and people who spec from his books so much, cause it’s just a really dumb thing to worry about.
If he wants to wrote stories where there’s not really a secondary market with collectibles (yes, comics are not just for reading, they’re collectibles as well), he should just stick to writing novels without any pictures. You don’t see the latest Stephen King book getting hot on eBay or Amazon.. only if they decide to print very little and it’s hard to find, which never happens. 😉

  2. Nothing else really hits the stands this week for DC? What about Superman #11 featuring the Super Sons? I thought issue #10 was fun and look forward to this one as the story continues.

    1. True, I’ve been enjoying Superman but I’m also behind in my readings. So I was mostly in reference to new stuff and or spec stuff, leaving out the regular pull stuff.
