Comics for the sake of comics….
I always support cheap comics, 25 cent comics, 99 cent comics. What ever, I will buy and read them for the value. Alterna comics is doing something completely different and instead of going for glossy, flashy, expensive comics, they are going for cheaper, news print comics. Here are their first four launches.
Here is the deal, the first issues of every black and white series will be priced at $1.00 with subsequent issues being priced at $1.50. The first issues of every color series will be priced at $1.50 with subsequent issues being priced at $1.99. We’re aiming to launch this line in Spring/Summer 2017 with most books being bi-monthly limited series titles, one-shots, and a few quarterly titles.
From Alterna publisher Peter Simeti:
“When I fell in love with comics, it was an entire experience. The stories, the imagery, and the paper. There was almost nothing else like reading a comic book. It was a fragile thing, but durable at the same time. Printed on newsprint with a thin, but glossy, cover, you could roll the comic – not that you’d necessarily want to – and they were lightweight and had a floppy feel. The smell and feel of the pages is something that no longer occurs on the new comic book day release wall, yet it’s prevalent in back issue bins across the country. Our goal is to create a comic book that would “feel” like it just came out of a shop from 30 years ago.”
“While most companies seem to be trying to out do each other with premium paper stocks and escalating price tags, we’re aiming to make comics affordable and bring back a practicality to single issues. We’re not in the business of making collectibles first and comics second. These won’t be variant covers or variant issues, just basic comic books. We’re happy to leave the premium paper stocks to our graphic novel line, which we will still be producing. Right now, we’re aiming to launch this line with a few different price points.”
Brilliant idea actually—-wonderful venue for a budding writer and/or artist to ‘cut their teeth’—also a great proving ground for testing unique concepts and ideas…..
They should get Warren ellis to do another fell series. Remember that one?
The brilliant part of this idea is they are on the verge of creating their own market. Assuming the art and stories are of high quality, this will be interesting to watch. No spec, just comic fun.
Just wanted to stop by and say ” HAPPY FRIDAY THE 13TH!”
Ha. Finally got to put up my Friday the 13th post Jesus. Stay safe.
Count me in on the type that loves this idea. I do miss that old newsprint type feel and smell that comics use to carry..
That Lilith Dark looks very intriguing, I assume it is a girl (as in child) riding the dinosaur, what a great concept!!
Super original!!
The original Lilith Dark OGN came out in 2014. If you were hinting that this ripped off Moon Girl, it’s kind of the other way around.
When I saw it… The first thing it reminded me of was Terrible Lizard from Oni Press.
Devil dinosaur and moon boy was a 70s comic tho.
I must admit I was unaware of any of this, but still bloody awesome!! Being as it’s being printed on new print, I’m hoping it’s child friendly as if being on the newsstand like days past, then I’ll get it for my daughter too.
The creator is local. I think this was looking at being optioned at one point
Cool, maybe it could still happen if the comic is a success
Kudos for the publisher! It is good for everyone to take a step back and remember their roots! I agree with Steve’s comics about probably no spec value. These are limited series, so I wonder if this will be a long term trend or just end after these limited series are over.
Probably end. But still going to throw my support behind these. Hopefully the big guys get the message. There wouldn’t be spec with out reader books and collectors. This one is just for the love of comics.
