Dell’Otto has been the artist of choice for variants for a little while now, producing some very beautiful art work that people have been flocking to. His latest cover for Iron Fist #1 is no exception. Check it out after the jump.
They are doing something completely different with this one.
The Color Variant will have a print run of 3,000 copies. The Black and White Variant will have a print run of 1,500 copies. The Virgin Variant will be 600 Copies, and there will be an Ultimate Edition which will have slightly different art and will only be available in CBCS graded 9.8 and limited to 250 copies (more details on that to follow.)
Books will be available for pre-order Sunday 2/19/17 at around 1 PM at Frankie’s Comics, The Comic Mint, Sad Lemon Comics, and 7 Ate 9 Comics

Interested in the cbcs graded, but don’t know price point yet…..
Yeah I need that CBCS /250. I’m interested to see the price too
Beautiful cover! I’ll probably just grab the color one for myself. Not finding store exclusive variants to be specworthy anymore
As nice a cover that it is.. I’m gonna pass.. I can’t handle ordering these 3 cover package deals anymore and apparently now they’re 4 comic package deals…
the 4th cover will be available to buy on its own. We decided not to make people have the buy 1st 3 to get it
I realize that but meh.. not for $250 though.. maybe for the hardcore fan.
To me, it’s just a cash grab. Print smaller number so the price can be jacked up.. Maybe if I really want it, I’ll wait a few months and find them on eBay for half the price, either way, I’m not spending $250 on a modern limited graded store variant.. There are so many other options of comics in that price range that got there due to actual demand creating such value. 🙂
Would love a copy, but money is a little tight right now. But kodoes to all who get one.
I asked a site and they said $249 for the 9.8 copy.
Oh my…I’ll pass if that’s true…lol
$250 for a limited to only 250 copies with new art by Dell Otto in a CBCS 9.8 slab is a freaking steal people. If that’s the price I’ll be getting that. Not everything is spec play, that would be a beauty to own. And for less than most variants out there!
I have to agree. If I was a huge fan of Iron Fist, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy the 250 print run variant in 9.8 for $250. If you’re not a hardcore fan, then the decision inputs for buying it are much different.
there will be only 250 cbcs 9.8 in existence. no raw copies of the 4th cover.
price is 249
Correct. No raw copies.
How many of the 250 do you think will be cracked open and re-subbed to CGC? Half?
There will be a special label on it. I am sure some people will after spending $250 on it to spend a little more for the CGC label.
I’m gonna buy one, crack it open and read it. Then give it to my 8 year old to read. Let them shove it in the passenger back of seat pocket for a few months in the car.. then I’ll be the only one that has a copy that isn’t 9.8 and it will be priceless! PRICELESS! due to it’s uniqueness. 🙂
Rip a page out and have the only .5 graded copy.
Question: I assume more than 250 copies are being manufactured to ensure 250 are 9.8? And the remainder (9.6 & below) are destroyed?
I’d imagine so..
I rarely feel uneasy about anything new in our hobby. I am of the opinion that if you have something to sell and there is a market, then sell it. No one is forcing anyone to buy anything. Any collaboration between a grading company and a store/individual to guarantee a total amount of grades to be “X” – well I need to understand the details… all of them.
I will be able to give the full scoop in a few days. I promise.
Yeah…. I’m not telling anyone to not buy them, I just know I have better things to spend $250 on….
I will be able to explain a little more once I am given the go ahead. I talked to Kevin from Frankie’s comics last night but am not cleared to give all the info yet. More to come.
Destroyed? No way. They will be passed around to others to sell down the road just like any extras retailers have. Nobody is going to destroy “money”.
That’s a really nice cover. Great artist, great subject matter (I love Iron Fist). But the recent glut of store variants has burned me out. There are many great ones that have come out recently that I’ve passed on. My wallet can’t afford to spend an extra $80+ every few weeks to grab the next exclusive. I think we’re beyond spec plays now and looking directly at books for the PC (which I think is great! More for the “fans” now.)
so what happens if they find ones that get 9.9 or 10 graded? Will they keep or dispose of still? And how do we know they actually dispose of them all and that another 100 or 250 is floating around on top of the 250 since we know more than 250 has to be produced in order to find those 250 9.8.
I am sure anything above 9.8 will. It be disposed of.
I can tell you from experience dealing with store variants that extras are not destroyed regardless of what retailers tell the public. There are a number of ways to profit on the copies that aren’t announced to the public.
Comic dealing can be shady? NO! Say it isn’t so!! HA!
and honestly you think the worker there would dispose of? Say they find stack that looks really mint the workers grade another 50 9.8 to sell on side on ebay to mix in with the current supposedly only 250 in existence. Especially with everyone so money hungry on variants these days.
I will not jump to any conclusions until I understand details. I will say, however, that my growing concern is with CBCS. I had always used them because they seemed to be in business as a pure grading company. With the announcement of their pressing and now announcement of aligning with stores and specialty labels…. well… I don’t need to say anything further. Something is starting to smell in the state of Florida
The fishy smell in Florida may be me, I just left there. After 8 days in the Disney parks I may have been a little gamey.
I was just in fort lauderdale for the weekend. That could be it too!
Lol. I know comic fans (at conventions) get a bad rap for lack of hygiene, but I swear it really wasn’t me. As my sons like to say it was the dog.
I’m jealous. Loved Disney world with my boys last year. 8 days is a heck of a trip!
Yup. It was fun too. My boy Joe likes roller coasters. I do not. I can’t show fear to my son. Do not want to teach him that. So all the pictures we have either have me
Holding on to my son or eyes closed in terror. Ask Jesus, I text him pictures.
+1
Well, when you really think about it, the “powers” that be are trying to artificially create an ASM 667 1:100 Dell’Otto variant. Same artist with a super “limited” print run AND guaranteed in 9.8—-actually, a smart idea for those paying attention. I’m not sure if Iron Fist is the book to do this on, but there is certainly a market for it. To tell you the truth, I can’t even believe how much of a market there is for this character. Regardless, if I was a huge IF fan, I would surely pony up and buy one, thereby reducing any possible market increase after-the-fact. Seriously people….250 print run….in 9.8. I’ve speculated on far worse…..
totally wrong way of thinking.
First, 250 9.8 copies is a huge print in the 9.8 category of any variant ratio 1:100, 1:50 and 1:25 and asm 667 caught retailers off guard and same with the venomized variants. Check and see how many 9.8 made the grade. I bet less than 10 percent of this Iron man 250 9.8 print.
Second, this Iron fist Cover will have basically 4 variations of the same cover, but that the virgin cover is 600 and graded variant virgin is 250 with however extra copies floating around from the extra printing that won’t get destoyed. It’s not like a one of cover with no variations like the ratio covers and venomized ones.
If they just lowered the total print run to 500 and no other variations then the book as spec potential written all over it. Or even did 1000 on regular cover, 500 virgin , and do away with black and white. Only black and white covers look nice with venom on the cover IMO
Interesting view point and I can’t fault your math or reasoning. Ultimately, we’ll find out how many “hardcore” IF fans (or speculators) are at this price point. I think it’s a very interesting experiment with many known factors.
next will be a 5th version limited to 100 9.8 graded and signed by artist at 1000.00 price point lol
How do we know that they aren’t increasing the print run size of virigins to 1000 and actaully just releasing 600
I find it odd that Frankie’s Comics had Venom 4 otto virgin set sold out but now have more available along a bunch of grade 9.8 virgins now. Maybe they secretly increased the print run size because demand was high this time. The comic is the nicest of the 4 otto variants and should of sold out by now the 600 print run. By selling these 9.8 grade versions now does that mean its less likely u get a high grade mint one if you order a set too?
I certainly hope not, especially since I’ve ordered some copies of the color variant.
@brandon
Ding, ding, ding!
There is a way to guarantee the 250 print run. When I get the all clear I promise to share.
Brandon,
I own Frankie’s Comics. We sold out of Venom #4. My partners in the UK had inventory leftover. So they moved it to my website. That’s why I have extra.
Of course, the elephant in the room is that on average; and statistically speaking – 45% of all newly released books are 9.8; 45% are 9.6; and 10% are 9.4 or below. (Unless shipping causes damage ). Grading new books is silly imo for this reason. This is a whole different discussion. But if one takes those numbers then 500+ can be made with a statistic indicating roughly half will be 9.8. It actually can work quite easily
Did anyone have to double take on this? I swear I saw venom at first.
You can get a decent copy of Marvel Premiere #15 for the same money or less. Just sayin’
Any update on the details?

Thanks!
Serial numbers on the CBCS label perhaps? 1/250. 2/250. etc. But that wouldn’t prevent more raw copies being released. The best way would be serial numbers on the book itself.
Nope.
