Comic Picks of the Week for Delivery 3/15/17

Each week hundreds of new comics hit the stands, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we feel have  the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 3/15/17:
As I mentioned in the New Comic Spec Review video, this is a small week for me. Going to be placing some online orders though to make up for my lack of weekly shop pick ups. May just pick up the rest of the Flintstones series. Heard a lot of good things about it and picked up #1 to give it a try. Anyway, on to the picks of the week….
Returning Favorites
Death Be Damned #2 – First issue caught me enough with its weird vibe that I wanted to read on.
Divinity III Escape from Gulag 396 #1 – This Divinity III stuff has me hooked. Loving the Soviet Russian angle on the history of the Valiant Universe. I normally do not buy crossovers of event books but am loving this one.
Spookhouse #3 – As I said in the video, I just love Eric Powell’s work. Fun and creepy. the little ads he puts in the book ads to the fun.
Red Sonja #3 J Scott Campbell Cover – I am not really a fan of his work, nor of the series, but I get J Scott Campbell books signed and graded at NYCC every year. People gobble them up. These have the potential for growth.

The One For the Love of the Cover
All-Star Batman #8 Francavilla Variant – Surprised neither Mel or Poyo picked this one. Francavilla is a master and this cover is just beautiful.
The Odd DC One on the List
Superman #19 Gary Frank B Variant – Not sure why this is sold out at Diamond. Not sure who is concealed on the cover. But I need to know more.
The No Brainer
God Country #3– Already selling out online. Will see it sell out at Diamond and go back for a second printing at least. Expect a third print for #2 to be announced as well.
The Pick of the Week
Neal Gaiman’s American Gods Shadows #1 – I think the real money may be in the ashcan or the ECCC Variant, but not going to miss picking up a new Neal Gaiman book that has a TV show tied to it.
Like I mentioned, really small week. But let us know what you are spec-ing on in the comment section. And as always, in case you missed it, this weeks New Spec Review Video

  1. I love Francavilla so much, I’d literally pick his covers every week but then there’d be no point in my picks. 🙂

    1. Hmmmm….always appreciate another’s point of view. I find that he’s usually a hit or miss with me, not sure why that is.

      1. No…….. Francavilla has a style. Now it is not for everyone, but it has a mood to it. Moody comics, like my wife…. What, who said that

    2. I’m with you. I’ll grab any cover he does. Him and skottie young. I have “here’s juggy” 42/108 on my wall.

    3. If you like Francavilla (like I do too!), try and find a copy of his 1st American work on an under the radar indy comic called The Black Coat. It’s a little known series from Ape Entertainment about a Revolutionary War superhero/spy. There was a Preview book that has his 1st art, then a couple minis & one shots. They can be found in dollar boxes & cheap online.

Sooner or later Francavilla will do a bigtime series that clicks, & these could be a good one to hold onto. I thought Afterlife with Archie would do it, but the constant delays killed that. He’s better than just variant covers for Dynamite.

        1. That was awesome. It was a secondary market hit for a while. People discredit Dark Horse for spec but they have had some Winners. He was supposed to bring it back.

      1. Archie’s horror line is “art, and you can’t rush art” according to the Archie people. However they are launching a new horror title for Jughead and see how many people jump on it with the delays in Afterlife and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (both books I love and buy when/if they come out).

      2. I like the Archie horror books, but the delays are inexcusable. Gotta think it’s on Aguirre-Sacasa, not the artists? Especially since both Francavilla & Hack seem able to do like 6 variant covers per month each. Why they refuse to hire a decent writer and put out comics amazes me. Guess it’s a vanity project for A-S that “only he can do”.
And yeah, Black Beetle was good. Haven’t looked at the Spirit yet. I still have the “Eisner bias”.

        1. Lol, I have been texting poyo all night about the fact that my cookies were gone and i couldn’t get a straight answer about it.

  2. I just finished reading Hillbilly #1-#5. It’s a great, fun read. It’s one of my favourite titles right now. I wish I had picked up Spook House when it came out. It’s the first I’ve heard of this book. And I’ve sold 2 sets of the JSC Red Sonjas #1&#2 for $25 shipped. Nice lil profit on those books already. Sadly, I don’t have anymore. I would have liked to have a set of these. I think I’ll still grab a copy or two of #3 tomorrow.

  3. if I want horror in my archie comics for now on. I will just watch the second best show on the c.w. today. that show is riverdale and the actress that plays betty is sos exy testify blind adam out
