New Ms Marvel generating buzz

New Ms Marvel generating buzz

I have been sitting on this one for a little bit as I didn’t know what to make of it. The Muslim Ms. Marvel had a bit of a buzz when the final issue of Kelly Sue Deconnick’s series introduced her. Then the Marvel point one issue came out a week ago. This was her first full appearance. Then his article from Vibe came out.

What makes this article more an important than coverage in USA Today or other more main stream media outlets, is that Vibe caters to more hip, trendy people. If what the article says is true, then there could be. Good bit of demand for the book. Young trendy people are more likely to pick up stuff they read about then, say, your typically older, newspaper reader.
From the Vibe article:
The comic book is off with strong momentum. Kamala fan art has popped up everywhere from Instagram to fashion sites selling plastic yellow lightning bolt Ms. Marvel earrings. There’s been some negative online chatter: Conan O’Brien who Tweeted: “Marvel Comics is introducing a new Muslim Female superhero. She has so many more special powers than her husband’s other wives,” but deleted it soon after. There has yet to be an apology.
So it may be worth picking up the issues and holding them until the series comes out.

  1. Same here guys, about the holding pattern for these books…just wasn’t sure if the ‘Politically Correctness’ of the overall issue would eventually overshadow the book itself?
I’m still not sure if i’ll pick up any copies. More than likely, I’ll wait too long, and miss the boat before I make up my mind.
This issue was covered here yonks ago, but I still don’t know the comic community’s collective pulse surrounding this possible spek hit?
Personally, I’m still on the fence…sorry!
    Just my 2 pence worth!

    1. I was on the fence too and that’s why I waited to write it and even put it out that I didn’t know what to make of it. I think that there could be some heat but unsure of where this is going to go. More than likely there will be a heavy media push before the release, at least that week. That is when I think these could pop.

  2. This book reminds me of Harley Quinn – everybody will want it but print runs will be high too. I decided to take the chance so I am ordering lots so if anyone wants regular cover versions at big discounts off cover price in pre-sale please contact me. I am also taking the plunge and ordering the big rare variants on Ms Marvel and She Hulk #1 both out in Feb.

  3. Thanks Terry!
I’ll get off the fence soon before I tear my Trousers, and make a decision on these books.
There’s just so many other books that I’m actually ‘excited’ about getting. So, normally my motto is: If you’re not enthusiastic about it, then don’t pursue it! And for me that goes for EVERYTHING I do…ha, what’s that sound…ah, it’s just me getting down off of my soap box!!!!!!
I’ll hit you up for some stock when / if I decide to take the Ms. Marvel plunge.

  4. The desire for me just isn’t there. I’ll likely pass on Ms. Marvel. I’ll wait 3-4 months when it arrives digitally on Marvel Unlimited, the best way to keep up with most Marvel series, at least those you’re not willing to spend $3 or more on each month.

  5. I’m also gonna hold out. Just because this comic will raise eyebrows doesn’t mean it’ll be in back issue demand. However on the flipside, it does have a great creator in Kelly Sue Deconnick (Vertigo’s ‘AIR’). If Kamala character does heat up, grab her 1st app. (Captain Marvel #17) instead. I did grab a couple months ago. 😉

  6. By the way, my bad- G. Willow Wilson wrote ‘Air’. Not KSD. I guess I was the only one that read it, since no one corrected me? Ha.
That series off the beaten path/original but good- her writing teh new MS. Marvel is promising.

PS- Drew- I’m gonna track down a copy of CM #14 and check.
