Eternally Speculating

Thanks to OC_Guy for jumping in with this one.

By now most everyone who collects comics knows which issues of the Eternals are considered keys. Well, hold on a second, because there might be more Eternal keys than we thought.

CBR ran a story on September 5th where Richard Madden stated casting for the Eternals movie is not done yet. This is very exciting if you have been speculating on Eternals comics!  Who could they include next? The cast of heroes is quite large already but there might be room for one or two more. There are still a bunch of prominent Eternals out there that could be used. Also, there are a couple of areas that have been largely overlooked as far as potential casting as well as speculating goes. The Deviants and possibly the Celestials “If” they are given speaking roles or even show/project themselves in human form.  There are still possibilities out there!

What comes next is just guesswork. Speculating on who might be seen on the big screen next is just that, speculating. No way to guarantee any of this until announcements become official so tread lightly if you decide to make a purchase.

With that Hercules and Strafox come to mind as big players that could be next to join the ranks of the Eternals. Starfox first appears with his brother Thanos in Iron Man #55 (Starfox also knows She-Hulk). Hercules first appears in Thor Annual #1 and he has been in the Eternals rumor mill for a while. Neither first appearance of those two is cheap in any grade but would certainly see a spike if casting becomes a reality.

The Celestials are a bit of a curiosity on how the movie willportray these massive beings. The Celestials first appear in Eternals vol 1 #2. Will they communicate and interact with the Eternals or will they be giant props for the most part. Hopefully we get to see what they are capable of…which would be a lot of awesomeness! If so there are still some bronze age Eternals to look out for that have Celestial first appearances. Eternals #7 is a very good spec book to get even this late in the game. It is still very affordable even in high grades. #7 contains the 1st Celestial appearance of Eson the Searcher, Nezarr the Calculator,Jemiah the Analyzer, Tefral the Surveyor and The One Above All. That’s a lot of firsts for one book! Even if just one of the above is confirmed this book will be in more demand than now. Probably worth the risk to pick it up if you haven’t already.

There is also the Uni-Mind. The Eternals as a group can form a collective being of energy and supreme intellect called the Uni-Mind. A living group organism as Kirby described it. That makes it freaking powerful! A good chance the Uni-Mind will be used in the movie but would it just be energy in an ambiguous humanoid form or would they use a famous actor’s likeness? The First appearance of the Uni-Mind is in Eternals vol 1 #12. This book is also reasonable even in high grades.

Now let’s talk a little about the Deviants. IGN wrote about these evil fellows a couple months back as being villains in the upcoming movie. I don’t recall anything official from Marvel but it does make sense. Outside of Thanos most deviants go uncollected and uncared about. This might change a little with the movie. So far it looks as though Druig (an Eternal) will be the primary villain of the movie but the deviants have always been the main antagonists of the Eternals and they will probably play a big role as well.

There are so many Deviants out there and I have not seen any confirmation as to which ones if any will actually be included in the movie. IF the deviants are to play a moderate to large role and some of the upcoming casting announcements are for them that will definitely bring more attention to books they first appear in. Since there are a ton of Deviants I would advise you to take a look at the list of Deviants on sites such as Wikipedia to get an idea of who they are. Just in case.

Not to go overboard right now but some of the Deviants that could receive  screen time are Kro, Ghaur and Maelstrom. Kro (Eternals vol 1 #1) is a Deviant warlord. Ghaur (Eternals vol 1 #2) has been a thorn in the side of the Eternals and other Marvel heroes and was a major player in the Atlantis Attacks storyline of the late 1989. During that storyline Ghaur teamed up with Llyra who is an adversary of Sub Mariner, another character surrounded by plenty of movie rumors. Maelstrom (Marvel Two in One #71) is half Eternal half Deviant and has been involved with movie villain rumors in the past.

Not all Deviants are evil. Ransak the Reject (Eternals vol 1 #8) is a Deviant that looks human and is allied with the Eternals. He is also the son of Mealstrom. He would be an interesting addition.

Another Deviant that is allied with the Eternals and is also a friend of Ransak is Karkas.(Eternals vol 1 #8).  Unlike Ransak, Karkas look the part of a deviant. He is monstrous to say the least! The relationship between Ransak and Karkas and how they became allies of the Eternals would be entertaining to say the least!

A lot of guess work in this write up but hopefully some of it was insightful. Again, we just won’t know about any new castingsuntil more information is either leaked or an official Movie plot synopsis is released. So, look around but probably best no to go nuts on these…yet. Remember, have fun and don’t overspend or rush into buying comics you don’t know enough about. If you miss one boat another will be along shortly.

Here is the long Story longer. The list of comics that might be worth looking at some point if more signings happen.

    1. Hi Jason. Yes, you are correct with that! As a collector I got lazy and just started calling it Thor Annual #1. For the article I should have listed it as Journey into Mystery Annual #1. Thanks for the comment and thanks for reading!

  1. What are the groups thoughts on the Eternals having multiple films? In my mind, Marvel is doing this Eternals film in order to set up the cosmic side of the MCU. Once the history of the Eternals is explored in their feature film, will they make these characters a mainstay, and integrated in the MCU? Will they make cameos in the other MCU films? Or will these powerful characters be a one off on a platform to springboard the cosmic MCU? There are not many, if any, stories that have the Avengers, or Guardians, or any hero team, or individual hero, interacting w/ Eternals or Celestials.

  2. Yes, Maelstrom is definitely a hybrid! Half Inhuman and half Deviant which makes the concept of adding him and his son Ransak to the Eternals movie or the MCU more intriguing. A lot of cool potentials out there with the Eternals being added. It will be interesting to see who is part of the remaining cast. I hope they announce them soon.

  3. @Jayclue… I think you nailed it on the head with Marvel using the Eternals to set up the cosmic side of their cinematic universe. I can see the Eternals spanning multiple movies and multiple cameos with other film and TV franchises. I can see them, after the first movie staying away from earth and fighting cosmic threats until one so big comes forth they need the help of every hero…and maybe even some villains to not only save the earth but the entire multiverse. We’ll see on all that.

Right now I am excited to see a cosmic side as well as a potential horror side of the MCU. Doing those two right will definitely keep the whole super hero thing fresh, for me anyway. Here is to Marvel not screwing up regardless which direction they go!

  4. Cool article. Keep up the great work.

It looks like Kro and Arisheim may BOTH be in the Eternals movie. It appears there was a Funko POP leak that indicated these two characters would have toys created around them. In addition to the known cast!

They appear in issues #1 and #2 of the series run.

I am trying to get my hands on all the Price Variant copies of the comics as I can.

1 & 2 we’re printed in $.30 price variant editions. They are Very pricey right now.

And 12-13-14-15-16 all got printed as limited test market $.35 price variants. Seems these are super scare and hard to find.

    KEYS-

    12-Uni Mind

    13- Gilgamesh (very expensive already)

    14-Cosmic Hulk Robot.

Also for those interested, the first preview appearance of Ikaras was actually in issue #12 of FOOM magazine. It predates Eternals #1 by quite a bit. Also noteworthy is that NOVA has a preview appearance in there too. Making this issue pretty special for the future. I snagged two of these on eBay recently.
