Poyo’s Spec and Drek for December 11th, 2019

Welcome once again to my spec and my drek. I pick what I think will be winners, not only if you make money by flipping but winners as in either a great read or just awesome art.

Then there’s the pesky drek, the comic you should avoid altogether or not fall into the buying every variant trap.

DC Picks

Dark Knight Returns #1 Grampa Variant… only because it got a little extra press over the whole Hong Kong protests going on, which could result in some outside the usual weekly crowds at the local shops. Like they say, bad publicity is good publicity.

Dark Knight Returns the Golden Child #1 (Rafael Grampa Variant)The other mention goes to Superman #18. Yeah, he’s revealing his identity again to the world, it’s happened before but you know, some people buy into Bendis’s tactics. Buy low, sell high, it’s one to watch. We saw Superman #17 shoot up in value and it was pretty much a prelude to the reveal where nothing really happened.

Marvel Picks

This first Marvel pick is a pick to see where this story is going after the supposed death of an Avenger.

Captain Marvel #13

‘THE LAST AVENGER’ PART 2: FIVE TO GO. One Avenger is dead at Captain Marvel’s hand.

Who will be next? And why? What strange allegiance is driving Captain Marvel to the darkest edge? Rated T+

Hopefully we get some early spoilers to find out what’s going on with some more details at least and is another Avenger on the chopping block? Also, if you visit the forums, I already posted some tidbit of news from this issue that tells us more about the Vox Supreme character..

Another story I’m interested in is Morbius #2 to see where this new Van Helsing type of character is going to play out.

Indie and Small Publisher Picks

Dying Is Easy #1 (of 6)

The debut of an all-new creation by Joe Hill (Locke & Key) and Martin Simmonds (Punks Not Dead)! Meet Syd ‘Sh*t-Talk’ Homes, a disgraced ex-cop turned bitter stand-up comic turned… possible felon?!

In part 1 of Dying is Easy, Carl Dixon is on the verge of comedy superstardom and he got there the dirty way: by stealing jokes. He’s got a killer act, an ugly past, and more enemies than punch-lines. So when someone asks Syd Homes how much it would cost to have Dixon killed, Syd isn’t surprised in the slightest. He’s already got a figure in mind…

Breathers #1

Breathers follows a small cast of individuals as they struggle to make sense of the dystopian world they live in, as a virus is unleashed into the air, rendering it deadly to humans.

Breathers #1 (Cover B - Lemire & Kindt)Among them: a detective whose addiction to the drug known as ‘Filter K’ takes over his life; a brother and sister who, due to recent events, start to wonder if the air really is deadly, or if it’s all just a conspiracy; a mother and daughter who will do anything to keep their family together; and a breather salesman who is looking to make amends for his past mistakes.

They are all survivors of this virus-plagued world. They are all ‘breathers.’ Variant cover collaboration between comic book superstars Jeff Lemire and Matt Kindt!

Red Mother #1 is the final pick this week. Might be BOOM! playing games for the additional printings but if this book takes off and its good, these could be great pickups not only for the read but for the flipping too.

Try and grab the 1 per Thank You variant for cheap too, which can turn into a quick and easy flip.

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.

All those Marvel Scourge titles..   Pick the few you wanna read and leave it at that.

    1. That cover is just interior of what we’ve already seen. And its just when his eyes go dark. I don’t think we’ve truly seen what Dylan is yet…

      1. I’m banking on the assumption that Dylan’s appearance want change much. I’m thinking that he will remain in his current form with blackened eyes etc. As we go along I think we will learn and see more about his powers. But who knows.
