Every week, hundreds of new comics hit the stands, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 1/29/20.
New #1’s
Frankenstein Undone #1 – Mike Mignola returning to Frankenstein. Love seeing his work, especially his no Hellboy related stuff, although I love that too.
Protector #1 – New Image series. From SIMON ROY (Prophet), Sideways Award-winning author DANIEL M. BENSEN (Junction), ARTYOM TRAKHANOV (UNDERTOW), JASON WORDIE (GOD COUNTRY), and HASSAN OTSMANE-ELHAOU (Red Sonja) comes a sci-fi adventure equal parts Conan the Barbarian, Mad Max, and The Expanse.
Of all the tribes that dwell in the hot ruins of far-future North America, the Hudsoni reign supreme, but even they fear and obey the godlike Devas. When the Devas warn of an old-world demon in the conquered city of Shikka-Go, Hudsoni war chief First Knife decides to deal with the threat personally.
Avengers of the Wastelands #1 – Spinning out of the Dead Man Logan story, and continuing the Old Man Logan world, comes a new group of Avengers, including Dani Cage, Thor.
Reprints of the Week
Star Wars Rise Of Kylo Ren #1 2nd Ptg – Already seeing some love on the secondary market. Reprints the new Kylo Ren series which has been getting heat.
Dollar Comics Detective Comics #554 – Reprinting Black Canary’s first appearance, in her original blue costume.
Amazing Spider-Man #347 Facsimile Edition – reprinting Venom Island original story.
Fantastic Four Special #6 Facsimile Edition – first appearance of Annihilus reprinted.
Marvel Must Haves
Thor #2 – putting this on the list because of the universe the Black Winter destroys. Fun nod.
Ravencroft #1 – picking up where the one shots left off, new series featuring the Arkham Asylum of the Marvel Universe. The story has a slightly supernatural tinge to it. I am all about this one.
Spider-Verse #4 – A little buzz over the focus on the Lone Stranger. I am more impressed with his sidekick. Miles Morales in a poncho and sombrero.
Weapon Plus World War IV – Pretty cool story featuring Man-Slaughter, a new man thing developed for military purposes.
Small Press Gems
A trio of cool comics from Source Point Press that look pretty cool.
Apocalypse Girl (Source Point Press) #1 – Not to be confused with the Amigo Comics book of the same name. Upon returning from the makeshift foxhole where her Papa sent her to hide from raiders, Anna finds his tattered body, ripped apart in a manner she recognizes to be the work of creatures he referred to as “hunter-fiends”, thrusting her into the position of now having to fend for herself while balancing the lifelong lessons from Papa with her own desire for retribution.
Horror Double Feature One Shot – Another source Point Press horror comic that looks good.
Seeress Embla Of The Dead One Shot – Embla is a Morthwyrtha worshipping her dead kin. In an attempt to reach her mother, her divine reverie is broken by a malevolent demon holding her parents captive. This rescue errand drags Embla through a hell spawn trial of spiritual combat, death, and resurrection to save her family from the underworld’s unspeakable tortures.
Pick of the Week
Avengers #30 – Premiere of the new Starbrand. Could see some gains.
