Comic Picks of the Week for 4/15/20

Every week, hundreds of new comics hit the stands, each with potential. Some lived up to that potential. And then new comics stopped a couple of weeks ago. Wednesday used to be like your birthday in the middle of each week. Now, not so much. But that doesn’t mean we cannot not spotlight comics that are new to you. Here is this week’s picks.

New Comic Pick of the Week

First up, an actual new comic is out tomorrow. White Ash #4 is out from Scout Comics. If you haven’t read White Ash you are actually missing out. Its a good story about White Ash, a small smudge of a mining community in Western Pennsylvania, where the secrets are buried even deeper than the coal under the mountain. If you’re a fan of Supernatural, Twin Peaks or Lord of the Rings, you’re going to love getting to know our mysterious town. It is a really good read. You can catch up on the series here. And if you purchase from the Scout Store, enter your local comic shops name and location, they will get half of the proceeds as a cash payment to help keep them going.

Now this week’s Cheap Read Pick of the Week:
Agent X 1-15
This is an odd one. It is a series I haven’t thought about in a long time. I came across them in my re-bagging and re-boarding adventures (ok its not really an adventure, kinda boring really, but satisfying.)

It is a Deadpool related series, so, if you are a Deadpool fan and never have heard of the series, you may want to check it out. Here is the history of the series, you see, and may not believe it, Deadpool sales were once dropping. In an order to save the book, it was relaunched as Agent X. This was part of a larger relaunch which saw Cable become Soldier X, X-Force become X-Static, and X-Men become New X-Men. The Series was written by Gail Simone with art by Alvin Lee and Udon Studios.

So what is the series about:

Alex Hayden emerged in New York with one goal in mind—to be the best mercenary alive. He was found by Sandi Brandenberg, Deadpool’s former secretary, who assumed he was Deadpool by his powers and demeanor. He subconsciously took the name as a combination of composers he liked: Alexander Grieg and Josef Haydn, which Sandi worked out through his fondness for classical music. Sandi’s friend and distant romantic interest Taskmaster was sought to help him get his bearings and train him, as was Outlaw, for her shooting skills. Taskmaster noticed Alex was ambidextrous and that he was somehow interfering with his reflex ability while training with him. Taskmaster then knew he couldn’t be Deadpool, despite his healing factor and recognition of him and Sandi, and Outlaw corroborated this as Alex proved to be a better gun talent than Deadpool. Sandi and Alex formed a mercenary group, Agency X.

The charm of the book is in both the story, which focuses on whether Agent X is really Deadpool or not, on Taskmaster, who plays a big role in the book, and also the art by Alvin Lee. There are some really fantastic cover to the series. The issues can be picked up for $2 or less on eBay.

Check out some of the covers below, many of the covers feature Agent X’s female companions:
