Poyo’s Spec & Drek for September 23rd, 2020

Welcome to this weeks spec and drek. This is where we pick the winners each week we think will be spec worthy, a great read or just cool looking art on the cover. I also dive into the pesky drek, the book you should probably avoid if you can or perhaps not invest so heavily into.

DC Picks

This week is just kind of bleh..  My top pick for DC this week goes to Mirka Andolfo’s Batgirl #49 Variant Killer B cover though. I really dig her artwork. It’s nothing new or groundbreaking for the cover though, just good art.

Apparently in Suicide Squad #9, we’re suppose to get the “shocking death of Deadshot” but I’ve seen the issue already. I don’t think it actually happens in this issue..  probably next issue, if he does die.

Death Metal Speed Metal #1 had the new ratio Momoko cover which I don’t expect too much out of. Likely over ordered and heavily priced (more than 40 available in pre-sales still at time of writing). It’s one to wait and snag at rock bottom prices a few months from now. Unless of course something big happens in this issue but I’m not anticipating much.

Marvel Picks

Star Wars Bounty Hunters #2 2nd print. Just a great looking cover. Probably won’t do as well as the first book 2nd print but it’s one for the personal collection that any Boba Fett fan would admire.

And don’t forget Star Wars Bounty Hunters #5 also comes out this week, with another awesome looking Bermejo regular cover with Fett on it.

Thor #6 gets it’s second printing. Grab and stash and wait..

Venom #28 comes out as well. Wait for the spoilers. I’m sure most of you all have heard and we already posted some tidbits over on the forums (and in the Lounge for you trusted members who hang out there long enough to reach such status)…  It’s a cool cover but the depiction on the cover doesn’t even occur within the book.

There’s also a Venom #28 (Stegman Variant) available as well. Not great but not bad either. Personally I wouldn’t go heavy on it.

X of Swords Creation #1 XoS is a new X-Men book hitting shelves this week. I have yet to read this but I’m also severely behind on all X-Men readings. I just can’t get motivated to get into X-Men nowadays.

There is a cool Pepe Larraz design variant though I pre-ordered.

Indie and Small Publisher Picks

Canto II Hollow Men #2 (of 5) is just a great series. Fun to read. Great artwork. Pick these up for the read if you haven’t already.

Sold out at Midtown already but still available at TFAW is Spawn #309 (2nd Printing). Pick it up if you missed the first printing. If this one heats up, it’s gonna be later rather than sooner I think.

Already sold out at most retailers online, Autumnal #1 from Vault Comics might be a great read, could be a dud. I don’t know, the story doesn’t sound ground breaking but I can sense it’s the type of mystery drama people go after.

It’s one to check out if I see it on the shelf (if I go out, which is rare). Vault Comics are quick flips if they do heat up, so if this one does take off, be quick if you don’t intend on keeping.

Brooklyn Gladiator #1 looks fun but Heavy Metal is so hit or miss. I don’t expect this one to be easy to find. Only 1 listed on eBay at the moment.

Now on with the dreaded “drek” pick, every writer and artists worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work. The book to avoid or not fall victim to in buying at ratio inflated prices.

Juggernaut #1. Really? Do we need a standalone title for this character? Marvel has a aresenal of so many other more interesting characters that deserve their own title than this B rated X-Men villain..   unless the writing is just astounding, I don’t expect much out of this one. Buy the cover you like best and leave it at that if you intend on picking up.
