Comics Picks of the Week for 9/10/14

Each week, hundreds of new books hit the shelves, each one with potential. Some live up to the potential. each week, we pick the books that we think have the best chance for heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 9/10/14:

The one with the walking and the dead:
The Walking Dead #131– Had to get this one out of the way early. With more news coming out about the Walking Dead companion tv show, there is potential for characters being pulled from the comics into the shows. Plus, this is a Carl story, his “journey begins.”
The Pick of the Week:
Rot and Ruin #1– Jonathan Maberry’s new book. He has a multi-picture deal. Also, zombies. People still love zombies. There is a 1 in 10 variant which will be the one to get. Prices are already starting to pop before release.
The new favorite one:
Spread #3– Yeah, its that good. The book has had small print runs. The third print of #1 comes out tomorrow as well as the second print of #2. Expect really small print runs on those.
The small press gem:
Annihilator #1– New Grant Morrison book from Legendary Comics. Legendary Comics is the same company as Legendary Studios, the movie company. Probably a pitch book that will be optioned later.
The one you probably wouldn’t think of getting but should:
Teen Dog #1– Hip fun goodness! There is also a 1 in 15 variant. There is also a really cool Teen Dog #1 Third Eye Variant which is worth a pick up as the print run will be fairly small.
The New Image #1:
Copperhead #1– When Brian K. Vaughan says “Copperhead is the best Image debut of the year and my favorite new comic,” you should listen. There is also a sweet Copperhead #1 Third Eye Variant by Declan Shalvey of Moon Knight fame.

Single mom Clara Bronson is the new sheriff, and on her first day she’ll have to contend with a resentful deputy, a shady mining tycoon, and a family of alien hillbillies. And did we mention the massacre?

Well that is it for us this week. Let us know what you are spec-ing on.

  1. 2 stores, no 2nd print #2 of Spread to be found. I did snag 2 x 3rd Print though.
I also managed to snag 2 x Wilds End Virgin cover, one store had at $7.99, the other at cover price.

      1. A few of the 3D covers popped into my pull list at my local shop, I handed those back. I’m not budging this round. No 3D for me.
My usual LCS had no Wilds End regular covers, all came damaged. I snagged their only virgin variant cover.

  2. One guy had 2 copies of each 3D that came out today..Annihilator #1 has major shipping issues ..hard to find a crispy one ..but they are there ..As usual the buyers flocked themselves around the marvel section..Death Of Wolverine #2 was moving ..Zombie Tramp had a couple of looks..the art in this book is great .Rot and Ruin was pretty stagnant.Spread #2 Second print were there tons of em.hope some are left on Friday when i go Back

      1. My wife saw my Zombie Tramp FCBD and was like.. “really, Zombie Tramp?” I was like, “It’s free, you grab a copy of everything babe!”
It never made my list but does look fun.

        1. I keep certain books away from the wife. i love cheesecake, so i still get Cavewoman (Had Budd Root do a Merriam Sketch this weekend) and Tarot (Love Jim Balent’s work as cheesy as it is). Zombie Tramp was a natural pick up for me, especially with the art on the new series, plus, small print runs.

  3. Every shop still had stacks of Death of Wolverine. Not interested. I like Wolverine in the movies, not so much in the comics.

    1. I used to love Wolverine, then I got burned out on him. I have the original Mini Series, the early issues of the First solo series (2nd series) and even have some of the rarer issues like 102.5. But i am really Wolverined out. Did love Old Man Logan though.

      1. Yeah, that’s how I feel now as well. He’s fine making appearances in other titles but I just have zero interest to read Wolverine dedicated comic.
