Every week, tons of new books hit the stands, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are the picks of the week for delivery this Wednesday
New #1’s
Break Out #1 – New Zac Kaplan series. He has had a couple of optioned titles. When massive cube spaceships from another dimension materialize over our cities and routinely abduct teenagers to be held inside their mysterious floating prisons, Liam Watt’s younger brother, Tommy, is taken. But while governments and adults across the world accept this loss as inevitable, Liam refuses to give up hope. Now, in a “take back our future” anthem, Liam assembles a skilled team of ordinary high school students to risk it all–but can they pull off the impossible and succeed in an out-of-this-world prison break?
Vanity #1 -Sweet! Scout doing Elizabeth Bathory, the Blood Countess. Every great legend has a beginning and horror stories are no different. However, our tale-as it is based on a true story-begins at the very end. The legendary Blood Countess Elizabeth Bathory is dead, and gravediggers are assigned to relocate her corpse. But who was she really? Was she a monster or a victim? Here we witness Elizabeth’s birth and childhood, and see the earliest moments of her life through her eyes. This includes her first encounter with death and blood that awakens the beasts that lurk in her innocent, yet twisted mind.
X-Men 92 House Of XCII #1 – Everyone’s favorite ’90s incarnations of the X-Men have returned but this time, everything is even all-newer and all-more different! Mutantkind is taking a huge leap forward by founding their own nation on the island of Krakoa, guided by Professor X, Magneto, and a mysterious long-lived woman who knows more than she should. That’s right – the ’90s X-Men are tackling the Krakoan Age thirty years early and it’s NOT going to go the way you expect!
Image 30th Anniversary Anthology #1 – Celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first Image comic with a year-long parade of all-new stories from some of the biggest and best names in comics! Featuring a combination of ongoing serials and standalone short stories, this inaugural issue kicks off with the first chapters of two 12-part stories: ‘The Blizzard’ by GEOFF JOHNS & ANDREA MUTTI and ‘Red Stitches’ by BRENDEN FLETCHER & BABS TARR-plus the opening installments of a trio of three-parters: ‘Gospel for a New Century’ by WYATT KENNEDY & LUANA VECCHIO, ‘Loop / Hopeless’ by MIRKA ANDOLFO, and ‘Shift’ by KYLE HIGGINS & DANIELE DI NICUOLO. Plus plus! A first look at DECLAN SHALVEY’s upcoming OLD DOG series and an original ongoing comic strip by SKOTTIE YOUNG!
Flashpoint Beyond #0 – Geoff Johns and Eduardo Risso return to the Batman Flashpoint world.
Kaiju Score Steal From The Gods #1
Miskatonic High #1 – Five teens take on tentacled monsters and their small-town high school – they’re just not sure which is worse – in this new series which has been called ‘the bastard love child of John Hughes and H.P. Lovecraft.’ The tongue-in-cheek horror series, described as a ‘Breakfast Club from Hell,’ was a smash hit on Kickstarter and comes to comic shops
One and Done
Midnight Rose #1 – Join the legendary Jim Starlin on a journey through the life of a singular, frightening and very human creature: MIDNIGHT ROSE. A particularly bizarre tale of loneliness, love and what happens when you can’t help but give in to the vengeance growing deep within yourself.
For the Cover
Batman 89 #5 Adam Hughes Cover – Adam Hughes covers are always popular.
Notable Reprint
Venom #5 2nd Ptg – sweet interior art cover featuring Meridius.
Small Press Gem
Giant Sized Santos Sisters #1 – This is a strange one. Has had some chatter about it already. Odd mix of Archie like art with super-heroics. Worth checking out.
Small Press Pick of the Week
A Town Called Terror #1 – Steve Niles horror comics are always a go to for me. Henry West is brutally kidnapped in the middle of the night while his wife Julie watches, terrified. Henry awakens to the reality of his whereabouts, but Julie, with no evidence of the phantom crime, is unable to get help to search for him. A new series from the minds of cutting-edge horror creators STEVE NILES (30 Days of Night) and SZYMON KUDRANSKI.
Pick of the Week
Sandman Universe Nightmare Country #1 – James Tynion doing Sandman, worth checking out, especially before the Sandman makes it to the screen. That Frison 1:100 incentive featuring Death is going to be crazy. Already selling for up to $400, while recent sales have been lower, the prices at auction are still pretty high as are the asking prices.
Note:
Both Venom #1 1:100 Peach Momoko and Venom #1 2nd Print 1:25 Ratio are back in stock at TFAW and are selling for 2x or more what TFAW is charging.
Nothing impressive out of Black Panther 5, then?
I actually had it on the list until I read it. Spoilers later. Numerous spoilers.
Humorous that is.
Consider me intrigued.
This week is like a 5th week.
Yes it is. More spoilers to come though.
