August is almost over. Kids are going back to school. Football is starting. The signs that summer is coming to an end. But Blind Bags are just getting started…

COVERS

A NEW ARC! Batman has long depended on this mantra to uphold justice in Gotham City. But what if Gotham was a city devoid of fear? Would this lead to a city free of inhibitions or a populace driven suicidal by an inability to process mortal terror? To answer this question, the Dark Knight will embark on a harrowing adventure that must be seen to be believed! Join the powerhouse team of Tom Taylor and Mikel Janín for a brand-new arc that teams Batman and the DCU’s most iconic heroes to unravel the mystery of a terrifying world without fear.

Dell Otto with a nice Detective Cover.

Another Dell Otto variant this month featuring a character from Batman’s Rogues gallery.

Wow, the Muppets are 70 years old?! That’s pretty scary. Of all the covers, I like this “Kermit the Throg” and Gonzo as Silver Surfer the best.

Not too big a fan of these Spears variants for DC. But this one features Krypto!!! If only there were more cool Spears covers on FOC this week…

REPRINTS

This will be interesting. First, I don’t think this would look good foil-ized…but here it is. Second, I thought this book was a size that was not able to be slabbed…so not sure if this will be Golden Age or Modern size.

NEW CHARACTERS?

SPIDEY & HIS COSMIC FRIENDS! Who is this space-faring Spider-Man, and who is his crew?! You may recognize Rocket Raccoon and may have heard of Symbie. The other companions will have a huge impact on Spider-Man and may hold a key to some mysteries that have been brewing!

There are a couple characters I do not recognize on this cover. Solicitation makes it seem there may be first appearances.

Johnny Blaze, Danny Ketch, Robbie Reyes, Kushala, Fantasma, Hellverine and more! Ghost Riders unite! When a strange group of new villains set their sinister plan in motion, Ghost Riders past, present and future must combine forces to save the world. But just who is the Spirit of Violence, and what horrors do they bring from Johnny Blaze’s and Danny Ketch’s pasts? Forget everything you thought you knew about Ghost Rider! The most climactic ride in history starts here!

Book seems to promise some new villains. I like the A cover as it features several Spirits of Vengeance.

NUMBER ONES

Spidey legend ERIK LARSEN puts on his writing hat to reinvent this Spider-Man like he did the original with rising-star artist ANDREA BROCCARDO. It’s the 1930s and Peter Parker is a private detective by day, vigilante Spider-Man by night. Things were going well until a certain dame walked into his office to ask Peter to solve the case of her father’s murder. The dame’s name? GWEN STACY! This case may not only break George Stacy’s police department, but Spider-Man himself!

Do I hear a Spider-Gwen: Noir??? I really like the Andrea Sorrentino variant, but it’s a 1:25 ratio.

A HAUNTING ANTHOLOGY TO USHER IN THE HALLOWEEN SEASON! Written by Daniel Warren Johnson, Roberto Recchioni, Andrew MacLean, Lyndon Radchenka, Callie C. Miller, Rowan MacColl, Cavan Scott Art by Riley Rossmo, Gigi Cavenago, Andrew MacLean, John McCrea, Rowan MacColl and Don Aguillo Spooky stories for terrifying times, featuring bone-chilling tales from some of comics’ most fearsome fabulists and harrowing artists! With spine-tingling shorts starring Batman, Ambush Bug, Raven, The Demon, Plastic Man, Swamp Thing, and, of course, the Mistress of Magic herself, Zatanna, as they summon spirits and struggle against the supernatural!

MINISERIES PREMIERE In 1003, Leif Erikson established a Viking settlement in Vneland (present day Newfoundland), a strange new world of plenty but populated by an indigenous people and something else…something UNNATURAL. Twenty years after the original expedition ended in disaster, a new attempt to settle this wilderness is made. Ulf and his hardened tribe of Vikings soon discover that the whisper of creatures who are both human and beast are not primitive legend, but death-bringing reality. VIKINGS versus WEREWOLVES! The real reason the Vikings fled North America!

Russia, 1961. Nine students die tragically under mysterious circumstances that will come to be known as the Dyatlov Pass Incident. To this day, the true cause of their deaths remains unknown, although some theorize the blame lies with visitors from beyond the stars…The New York Times bestselling and Eisner Award-winning co-creators of Something is Killing the Children, The Nice House on the Lake, The Department of Truth, and Powers follow up their acclaimed work on Blue Book with an all-new volume of “true” tales capturing the strange world of alien encounters—this time focusing on the uncanny extraterrestrial stories of Russia and China. Each issue will feature “True Weird” backup stories by guest creators.

Four-issue mini-series.

DREK OF THE WEEK

Mark Spears Monsters Blind Bags…we know there will be a bazillion of these…it’s going to be epic…some lucky few will hit it big, but many will likely regret how many they bought and how much they spent and what they got…I’d recommend buying a few for fun, then look to trade with friends. But don’t expect these will make you money…that’s likely not going to happen.

Parting Thoughts

So let the blind bag insanity begin (or is it continue?)…how many Spears Blind Bags will you be getting?

Have a great week everyone!
