Here is a book that flew under a few people’s radars, the new storyline is titled “The Death of Snake Eyes pt.1” As most know IDW had a sell out book recently that is still maintaining its’ price tag, TMNT’s death of Donatello. Instantly this issue was sold out everywhere, every cover and despite there being rumors that he will return, this book is already a Modern key. Now let’s talk G.I. Joe and what might happen: This series already has a low print run that averages 6K ( in comparison to TMNT’s 14K), if this storyline takes off you will have a feeding frenzy that will make TMNT #44 look like a goldfish snack. Snake Eyes is G.I. Joe’s most popular character and his death won’t have the mass appeal Donatello’s did but it will start a fire for these underrated Joe books and might see an increase in Snake Eyes’ cover issues.
There are four covers available: The ECCC variant which is still sitting at $20-$30 at the moment, the regular cover A
, the Subscription variant
which sports a Snake Eyes cover, and also the RI cover
which is a BW sketch. Pick up the RI variant as it will be harder to find and it has the cover everyone will want. Get on this one now. Once news breaks these issues will be sought after and the ones leading up to the actual death issue. The actual death issue will be in issue #214 and the storyline goes until #215.
I picked up B&W RI variant. I heard about this storyline a few days ago. I flipped through it, no death. My money is on issue # 214…..
TFAW have #214 on pre-order for 20% off. They have the regular cover and the subscription variant. I did great with TMNT #44 and I’m hoping for the same with these books. @Kyle I did see that the B&W #212 variant has been bid up to $16.50 so far. An auction had 80 issues available and they all sold out in less than an hour.
I saw that auction too. People that see the title “Death of Snake Eyes” will be pissed off once they read issue # 212. I ordered copies of the B&W RI variant of # 214……it’s a gamble; but once I saw # 214 Subscription variant, I had a good feeling.
It looks like the B&W variant #212 could go crazy over the next week or so. People are starting to list it for $64.99 BIN or higher. The #212 issue that is ending today is up to $17.50 and has 100 views. It could get interesting. I don’t think it will be TMNT #44 interesting, but we could see some money changing hands quickly.
The #212 sketch variant has now hit $43.00 with 3 hours to go. Nice!

I asked my LCS for this on Facebook while I was at work, which he said he had, then I got home and realized he had given me GI Joe Vol 7 #7… he said he had to re-order 212 🙁
That’s entertainment these days. In the past killing a major character was a huge event. Killing off a secondary character was a huge event. But TV and comics these days it’s all about character death watch. Game of Thrones (which has killed off characters that weren’t even killed in the books), Walking Dead, even Lost (which had to find new ways to introduce more island inhabitants just too kill more off), and Sopranos while iconic shows were also just huge character slaughterhouses. Now you get people upset online because there wasn’t a big character killed off in the Walking Dead season finale. In comics the list of dead or soon to be include Deadpool, Wolverine, Donatello and Snake Eyes as highlights. But it is a successful marketing strategy. It sells. The argument isn’t that characters shouldn’t be killed off, even when it’s very painful (Dickens used to become very upset when doing readings of Oliver Twist whenever he got to the part about Nancy) but more that killing characters off has become a somewhat lazy overused device to elicit an easy response and emotion, and that is a shame.
