Today, Marvel is pleased to announce fans will have another chance to get their hands on some of these exiting homages with the Hip-Hop Variant Sampler! Hitting comic shops on January 6th, this FREE sampler will help kick off the new year with a bang, bringing 14 of the most popular Hip-Hop Variants so back to comic shops!
“The hip-hop variants were a really special initiative that caught fire in the outside world,” says Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso,speaking with the New York Times. “We thought this was a great opportunity to highlight that and make it available to fans for free.”
At the intersection of Marvel comics and the world of hip-hop, this unique line of variant covers inspired by some of the most iconic and well received albums of all time has garnered mass-media attention the world over. Now, Marvel is starting 2016 off by bringing these sold-out covers back to comic shops!
“The Hip-Hop Variant Sampler is our way of saying thank you to the fans, but also to the retailers who have made All-New, All-Different Marvel a massive success,” says Marvel SVP, Sales & Marketing David Gabriel. “With the Hip-Hop variant covers being such a huge draw, our goal is to draw fans back to their local comic shop after the holidays end.”

So lately at one shop each Wednesday, there’s this couple who been getting there really early (this is where you get variants at cover). There’s at least two other guys that are there every Wednesday.. but lately this couple been getting there before any of us and they literally run to the new comics.. it’s just hilarious cause we’re all like in awe that they’ll make a mad dash back there to grab the one variant they get. The usual peeps are like.. umm.. no thanks, we’ll walk cause if we get them, we get them.. if we don’t, we don’t. No reason to act like a crazed maniac running for something that likely isn’t there anyways.
I rarely run for comics, but have had to run for the bathroom. (sorry, sorry). That is funny but I love that your store puts variants out at cover price. They must feel so good to be first in store to grab those variants (probably marvel ones)

Heh.. well, the funny thing is, they just came out of nowhere recently and one of the other guys overheard them chatting quietly, about getting there first to grab the one they wanted.. he said he just started shaking his head slowly. And yeah, I think they’re Marvel for the most part.. or the DC ones. Most of the early arrivals are trying to snag those.. I’m all like.. Indies.. Indies.. that’s how I end up with some of the Boom! variants and such that are even harder to come by at times, or just the rare indie when they have just a few on the shelf, never any problems grabbing those. I then go for the Marvel or DC after I grab my hidden gems from the shelves.
Marvel is just sad and all about the #1’s. Why isn’t all these new #1’s say All-New at least it would be a brand wide event every reboot. LOL
I love how Marvel has run out of adjectives to title their books. It used to be “Amazing,” “Uncanny,” “Spectacular,” “Mighty,” etc. Now it’s “All-New” or “All-New, All-Different” when we all know it’s not really All-New or that Different. Next it’s going to be “All-New, All-Different, We-Really-Mean-It-This-Time Avengers!” They really need some marketing help when all they do is rely on slapping a “#1” on the cover to try and sell more books.
I do wish they would add legacy numbering to the books as well. Would be nice to keep everything in order like Daredevil for example.
