Bleeding Cool article: The Evil Of Speculation Unleashed At NYCC

There is a good article over at bleeding cool this evening about trying to sell hot comics at NYCC. Jeremy Konrad writes about taking a stack of comics with him to NYCC to sell to help pay for his trip.
He took a mix of recent hot books and some more classic books trying to sell for $100. The list of books follows:

Amazing Spider-Man #361- 363 (First Carnage)
Star Wars (2013 Brian Wood Series) 1-9, all first prints
Marvel Skottie Young variants (Avengers, Superior Spidey, Thunderbolts, Iron Man)
Uncanny X-Men #266 (First Gambit)
Batman #1 (New 52)
New Mutants #87 (First Cable)
The Walking Dead #100 (Wrap-around Cover)
The Walking Dead Free Comic Day Issue 2013 (Origin Of Michonne) 2 Copies

He spotlights several dealers and hot they tried to rip him off, were completely indifferent to him, completely blew him off, and ultimately made a deal with him.

Of note, he talked about Batman #1 New 52 going for $80-100. Raw New Mutant #98 going for no less than $300 unslabbed. Recent Image #1’s, Lazarus, East Of West, and Ghosted all at around $10. And DC Villain month 3D covers having cooled to about $5 each.

  1. Speculating is not evil, dealer’s at cons who try to rip you off are. The writer of this article should have just sold his comics on Ebay or to reputable buyers on CGC’s web pages. Also Batman 1 in NM ungraded sells closer to 50-65 not 80-100

    1. At the convention that is what the were charging. I agree I don’t think speculation is evil and what the dealers were doing was. Especially since this whole web site is about speculating. I think that May have been his point or at least how I read it to mean.

  2. Conventions are always going to be over priced. It’s like buying a large soda at the movies, you pay $5.00 for a Big Gulp you can get for 99 cents at 7-11. 😉

    1. I get a quarter for every 7-11 plug on here. Just kidding. I think bargains can be had at conventions as the build haggle price into their wall books. Not to mention some people don’t price compare or will see it and just have to have it at whatever. At the last convention I spent more money on bags and boards than I did comics. Bought a case from Heroes in NC that was referenced in the article. Got a case of each for about $8 per hundred bags and boards combined because they didn’t want to haul them home.
