THE DAKOIT WEEKLY SPECULATION HIT LIST (October 30th 2013)!

From our friend Dakoit at http://comicbookspeculation.blogspot.ca/

Hey Guys,

My sincere apologies of my tardiness this week. So without further adieu, let’s get this show started…

In my constant quest to get you the most recent speculator info (In addition to my weekly in-depth blog columns) I thought I’d start a rapid post, and shoot out some recent books worth grabbing cheap if you can find them. Here are some Dakoit quick picks to grab at the store this week, some are older and some are new!

1. Wildwork#1 (Antarctic Press)
     Releasing: Oct 30th 2013
Why? Prof. Van Helsing meets Dracula in American Wild west. Obscure publisher with very low print run. On back order as we speak.

2. Superior Spider-man #20 (Marvel)
    Releasing: October 30th 2013
Why? The events in this book will be huge. Not since ASM issue # 700 has a Spider-man issue been hyped as much as this one. Just to let you know, the lowest price on ASM #700 is 14.99 on Ebay NM raw, while slabbed copies run for over $70 bucks easy.  ASM key books have always been the most sought after in the collectors market. Moreso than any other character.

3. Batman #666 (DC)
    Released: Released July 2007
Why? Rather than picking up Damian Son of Batman #1 that comes out today, why not get this baby cheap? 1st appearance of Damian as a more brutal future Batman.
Current Lowest Ebay price: $20.00, but I’m sure you can find one cheaper somewhere!

4. Action Comics vol.1 #471 (DC)
    Released: May 1977
Why? Rather than pick up Action Comics Annual #2 today (Faora first introduced into NEW 52)why not pick up her very very first appearance in back issue bins instead?
Current Lowest EBay Price: $8.49, but i’m sure you can find it cheaper somewhere!

4. Sandman Overture #1 (DC)
    Releasing: October 30, 2013
Why? Lost stand alone story of the Sandman. Will be sought after due to nostalgia among fans. And reviewed as a true work of graphic art for many years to come. By the incomparible Neil Gaiman and modern master J.H. Williams III.

5. The Fox #1 (Archie Comics/Red Circle)
    Release Date: Oct 30th, 2013
Why? Eisner Award winning writer and legend, Mark Waid teams up with with Emmy Award Winning writer/artist Dean Haspiel to bring you a new series from Archie/Red circle. Should be fairly low print run.  May be a sleeper hit.

In closing,

While I don’t see Wildwork#1 on many shipping lists this week, it is still listed on one:  http://www.comiclist.com/index.php/newreleases/this-week Let me know if any of you are able to track it down.

I don’t see Damian Son of Batman#1 being such a hot book in the after market. I love Batman, but I have to go with my theory of limited series; very rarely do they command much demand in the after market. Andy Kubert also has the writing chores…I never liked it when an artist goes story teller. Historically, it has worked very rarely in comics with very few exceptions (ie. Frank Miller, Jim Starlin etc.).

The big one for this week IMO, is Superior Spider-man #20. It will be in demand, if the ‘big news’ is really that big. Collector fanboys of Spider-man are completists and they all want back issues of each and every published title of their favorite wall-crawler. All the better for us!

With Faora making her live action debut (an ursa clone basically) in The Man of Steel, and now being introduced into DC’s new 52 this week, I would jump into back issue bins to pick up AC vol.1 #471. As more exposure and potentially re-appearance in a sequel (did she even die in the first movie?) and comics I see her popularity increasing and therefore the 1st appearance value. I’m sure you can find this book very inexpensive in some forgotten back issue bins.

With Overture, as with The Sandman #1….these issues will stand the test of time. I don’t see Overture being hard to find nor in such demand in the back issue market in the immediate future (Sandman#1 on Ebay now can be had with winning bids of $40 -$60; sorely undervalued of such a pivotal book) but IF there is ever a Sandman movie in the works, watch all these back issue titles sky rocket. Mark my words, there will be movie, and it will be sooner than later. Simply put, it’s hard to leave such a gorgeous book on the shelves.

Even as The Fox #1, has high profile and repected creators behind it, I feel it’s still a toss up. One thing going for it is the lower print run than other independant titles. So if you have some extra cash, pick a copy up this week. Should be a great read if nothing else.

I’ll leave you with covers of Damian Son of Batman #1 and Action comics Annual #2, just incase you were curious.

Until Next week,

D-

  1. Excellent article – I already showcased Wild Work #1 in my video this week and its i my pick of the week. Print run will be very small – i will guesstimate it to be about 3000 possibly and yet it features Dracula. It looks great. Diamond is sold out I cannot get more. I have already sold this book at $9.99 this week already.
Fox #1 also is a great one and has tons of great potential and a small print run as well.
Sandman Overture #1 I really dont think it has much of a chance except yes for maybe long term after a few years. But the print run is going to be high on this one so I did not order any copies as I avoid massive print run books.

    1. For me, Sandman Overture was a return to a much loved character. I read Sandman from the time issue one hit the stands. I don’t think this one is a pop as soon as it comes out bit do see it gaining value over time.

  2. Thanks for the Wild Work tip! mycomicshop.com has some for 3.99 each and when i searched on ebay as of Nov 1 @ 9:30 am, they had original Ben Dunn art pages for 9.99 each! I’m not kidding you. I was able to nab page 18 and they had a few others available. Thanks!

  3. Hey buds, thanks for the complements and posting my blog here! I don’t have a copy of Wildwork yet, but will plan to hunt one down this weekend. We’ll see what I can find out there. If I don’t come across any, i’ll grab a copy on ebay. WIth its crazy low print run (thanks Terry!) looks very promising indeed!

I gotta put a little damper on this optimism though. I don’t see a movie from this comic anytime soon. We have a Van Helsig movie (Hugh Jackman) and IMO the whole vampire craze is on its way out (or already is) and the fat cats in hollywood may not want to invest in another vamp movie…while I don’t see a price jump based on news of movie/tv show, as a comic riding purely on the strength of comic fan interest, this book still has a chance to be huge.
