Comics Picks of the week for 12/18/13

Well it is Wednesday eve, every Wednesday is like Christmas to me. Next week will be even more so since it is… Christmas. But this week sees some really cool books. Each week tons of new comics come out and we pour through them to see what we think could have some legs and heat up.

The one no-one sees coming:
Escape From Jesus Island #1- My first pick has had a little controversy behind it. Plus it is a horror series so that automatically puts it on my radar. Also, given that there are only two versions, the Kickstarter and the Phantom, both with print runs that are not overly huge, and you have speculator gold. This actually comes out Friday and can only be found at Phantom Variant stores. If you do not live around a shop that is a part of the Phantom Variant Network, you can order it directly at http://larryscomics.net/shop.html or on eBay from Third Eye Comics

The one from the Big Two:
Harley Quinn #1– Harley is hot and fans are buying up all her appearances. New series (don’t want to count issue 0 as it was all one page gags) could have legs as it is her first solo series in the New 52.

The one everyone is getting anyway:
East of West #8– Hickman’s series continues to do well. Prices on early issues should be picking up soon.

The small press follow-ups:
1. Voice in the Dark #2 First issue rocked and sold out.
2. Hawken Melee #2– Small print run from independent company. First issue sold out. On-line video game tie-in.

The Outside Shots:
1. Midas Flesh #1– Adventure Time writer brings his new creator owned series to Booms new imprint.
2. Illegitimates #1 New tongue-in-cheek spy comic from IDW.

Let us know what your picks are this week

  1. Superior spider-man variants have been hot lately. Although #24 isn’t a JSC cover, it’s still a pretty cool venom. Movie news never hurts either.

    1. You are 100% right about Superior Spider Man. I tend to not include the variants as the are not always easily obtainable by the general public. I know unless I call ahead, by the time I get to my LCS they are usually gone. I expect to see more venom appearances shortly.

    1. Prices seemed to have dropped to about $29.99 the day after release for the Variant. Had a chance (and still do) to get some but didn’t with Christmas around the corner making a 9.99 profit and then having to pay for shipping didn’t appeal to me so much

  2. I was looking at new releases for next week at the midtown website, even though i shop at but LCS, but i noticed there is barley anything coming out. Is this because of the holidays or is midtown just not updated?

    1. a majority of shops in tx didnt receive their shipment on time due to inclement weather impeding the usps, tho thankfully, my go to lcs was unaffected. maybe something similar happened with midtown

  3. ZERO #4, if my LCSs are any indication, was ordered at numbers far smaller than the first 3. I guess this title is under-performing but it’s so good and so unlike anything else, I have to believe that it has the potential to pick up steam. The next few issues could be the low print run hard to find lull in the series – and for such a good read at $2.99 I’d recommend picking it up on its own merits.
