Good Picking Dollar Bin Style

End of the year means tax time is coming up. A lot of retailers not only have to pay tax on their sales but their purchased inventory sitting around. So a lot of retailers have end of the war sales. Bargains and finds abound.

I have been picking at several sales recently and yesterday had a pretty good mini-find in a store’s dollar bins.

The first book I got was Clive Barker’s Next Testament #1 Phoenix Comic Con edition. Not nm but a good selling copy for $1 purchase.

Todd the Ugliest Kidd on Earth #4. Again not nm but for the price I paid I can still turn a profit by including this in the set of 1-3 I already have.

I picked up some recent Avatar books as well as some other Boom books for $1. The real prize was this one though.

A John Laymen autographed SDCC glow in the dark variant of Chew #19.

Of course as my luck would have it, the clerk debated that any of the books were dollar bin material. Of course I agreed as I plan to sell them for more than $1 each. After some conversation about “they shouldn’t have been there” and “I do not know who put those there”, the “I am a customer and not in charge of keeping your bins organized” argument won out. Also the fact I was going to out back some other large purchases helped win the day.

Point is, keep searching those bins for deals.

  1. This blog constants just seems to be a place for you to boast and brag about your ‘dealings’.
Not sure how it pertains to ‘tips’ I should follow.

    1. Not really a boast or a brag. I do comic picks of the week, news on books heating up, I spotlight books that are rising in price. If you are basing this off one post than you are sorely mistaken. Sorry you feel that way, I really am, but since you used a fake name and left no way to contact you (probably didn’t even bother to follow the comments to see if I replied back) there is no way to have an honest conversation about it.

      1. Clearly not a bragging post. There is great insight here on year end and how it affects retailers, and why it’s a good time for bargains. I just found some early think tank and some great new stuff to check out in the $1 bin. Thank you!

  2. Too bad only comic retailer in my area is Hastings entertainment. Their dollar bin consists of valiant bloodshot #1 and that’s about it

  3. Wow. That first poster has got some mighty big pickle up his arse. Good finds Anthony- I’m gonna do some hunting too. It wasn’t too long ago I found an American 1st app. Psylocke in NM+ condition (New Mutants Annual #2) for a buck…keeping persistent pays off. How’s that for a tip. ; -)

    1. I all for constructive criticism and honestly, if you think one post that was summed up by saying “check the dollar bins because you never know what you are going to find” is too much than be honest and say it. I usually just delete the “you suck” anonymous hit and run posts (few and far between) but wanted to take a second and respond to this guy (from Vancouver by the way, yes no email but your ISP showed up) that if you judge the site off the last post and the last post only, you are missing out on a lot of info. Not only from myself but Larry Doherty, Terry Hokness, Dakoit, and everyone who posts in the comment sections.

      1. I don’t feel I need to identify myself to have a valid comment. If you hadn’t deleted my comment I made on a previous post, you know I’m not basing it on just this post.
I feel you generally post about variants you have for sale, boast and brag about ‘finds’, and news stories from Bleeding Cool.
If you want to stand out from every other comic speculation website, offer something worthy.
And I’ve been following your blog for several months; just hoping for some better content.

        1. You ever think that bleeding cool and I get our stories from the same sources? Cause we do. A lot of stuff comes from press releases, message boards, or retailers and other connections, even other sites. But yes stories do over lap and bleeding cool has run stories after I posted them. It’s the nature of the beast. I post on things of interest to speculators bleeding cool posts on all sorts of comic book related stories.

I do not know what other comment you are referring to though that you are saying I deleted. I tend to delete negative troll comments as there is no point in posting them or arguing with them.

Please show me how many posts about my finds I put up. I can think of maybe two I have done. Out of 440 posts the average is low. I will make comments in the comment section but that is anyone’s right

As for variants i have for sale, you kind of have that a little backwards. I only have offered signed comics and one time offered three copies of the midnight release variant of the Walking Dead 115 at the price I paid for them. I ask if anyone is interested in the signed variants but it is not a requirement to do so. I guess you have never been on message boards and seen offers for grading preorders.

I do thank you for checking out the site. If you think that all I do is sell books, copy bleeding cool, and brag about my finds you really haven’t taken the time to read it.

Either way good luck with your speculation I wish you happy returns on your investments. If you have tips feel free to offer them. If you are unhappy with the site you don’t have to follow it.

  4. Don’t let that guy get you down Tony. Love the blog and I actually appreciate posts like this! I like hearing about other’s finds and cool books you run across.

  5. I’m somewhat new to comics and I’ve been following this site for months and never commented until now. I love the site and the great tips and I just want to encourage you to keep it up! How many other sites like this are there about comic speculation? Not that many. This site gets right to the point stating what’s hot and WHY it’s hot, even a dummy like me can understand! Also I’m not really into the superhero stuff, so I like how this site includes all the other great genres of comics (that I prefer). By the way I love New Testament, it’s an awesome book, and this site is awesome, keep it up!

    1. Thanks Jake. I appreciate the words of encouragement. The funny thing about the whole debate is this website is a hobby for me. It’s not like I get paid for doing this, I don’t charge people to come here. I am proud of how far it has come and all the great people I have met and talked to. I am really blown away by being attacked for putting up info and it not fitting one guys standard.

  6. that gentleman really needs to view another site if he is going to get angry about, well, nothing. I have been reading this blog for a few months as well, and even though I do not base my purchase on your suggestions, I do have a better idea of what is what when I hit the shop. And I received many more hits by utilizing the CHU heading on eBay. So keep it up, I will keep reading.

  7. Wow, I’m shocked that someone would come on this website and attack Anthony like that. I read a ton of comic related websites and forums, and I believe that this is one of the best ones out there. I’ve participated in several of the comic signings, and I think they are awesome. I don’t believe that he is bragging about anything, but rather sharing his knowledge and reporting what he feels is going on in the comic market…and he does a great job of it. I also like the contributions from Terry, Dakoit, Larry and all the others who comment. In the end, we are a community of informed comic collectors/speculators and should be doing this for fun. I hope in the future that instead of attacking our host, people would just post positive comments that advance our community.

  8. This site is awesome. I’ve got several great tips from your site and the comments. Picked up a few major winners too! Thanks for keeping this going! Happy holidays to u!

  9. I appreciate your site as well. I got back into collecting last year just to have fun. I’ve learned quite a bit about what to look for from what you’ve shared about each era of comics. I don’t just dismiss, let’s say, the Cooper Age anymore. There are worthy comics in any age so long as one understands the reasons for their importance. I’m not going to get rich doing this by any means, but if I can make a few dollars and buy what I really want to have in my collection, then I’ve enjoyed myself! And thank you for helping to make my day! Just a suggestion: I like dollar bins at my LCS, but I also visit yard sales and have made some nice buys. An example would be a Silver Age Iron Man #14 (well, it was in GOOD condition, but still, it was fun to pay only $2 for it), 3D Grood and Count Vertigo issues for only 50 cents each, and 9 Walking Dead TPB from a Church Rummage Sale for $9 total. It’s a lot more work going to yard sales, but what the heck, who doesn’t fantasize about finding some gem this way?

    1. I love when people share their pick success stories. Walking Dead at a church sale Epic! Who would have thought. But that is the idea. You never know what you are going to find or where. I do not do as much yard sale-in gas I should. Always hear of people coming away with stuff. Flea markets too.
