Comic Picks of the week for 1/15/14

Each week tons of new books come out, each with potential. We pick the books we think have the best chance of rising in value. Here are picks of the week for delivery on 1/15/14:
The one everyone is getting anyway:
Injustice Year 2 #1 DC’s breakout mini-series of 2013 continues in it’s second year with a new #1. Can the video game tie in continue to rock? Odds are, yes.
The ones from the big two:
Superior Spider-man #25– Leading back up to Peter Parker’s return, expect to see clues of his return dropped in this book.
Miracleman #1- For the first time in over 20 years, the classic Alan Moore series returns to print. Updated colors on this make the book look awesome.
The one that should have been out months ago:
Black Dynamite #1– This awesome movie tie in book has been much delayed but finally makes it to the stands. The subscription cover features Black Dynamite punching out a great white shark. There is also an awesome Third Eye Comics store variant which features a classic exploitation cover done by AFRODESIAC & SUPERMAG’s JIM RUGG, who also did the totally killer ’70s style WALKING DEAD Ghost variant a couple years ago.
The new Image number 1:
Egos #1– Not to be confused with the similarly spelled round toaster waffle. A twisted far-future epic! An aging hero risks everything to rebuild his former team – but to do so, he must cross a line with his wife that can’t be uncrossed.
The small press darling:
Curse #1 Riley Rossmo returns with a new series. BOOM! Studios has a long history of publishing some of the industry’s best modern horror, and CURSE takes us back to our roots with a werewolf story unlike any you’ve ever seen. Also features a Phantom variant from Rossmo which is pretty killer.
The outside chance:
Disney Kingdoms Seekers Of Weird #1– AN ALL-NEW ADVENTURE INSPIRED BY DISNEY’S LEGENDARY BUT NEVER BUILT MUSEUM OF THE WEIRD! Disney Properties have had a way of sneaking up as there is such a collector base outside of comics.
That’s it for this week. Tell us what you are spec-ing on this week.

  1. Not a bad list for the 2nd week of the new year!
I still have 2 full sets (1st prints of course) of: Injustice – Gods among us, so I think I will grab a couple of the Year 2 #1.
    THREAD-JACK, THREAD – JACK, THREAD – JACK
I hope everyone got their copies of: Marvel Premiere #47 & 48 (The 1st New Ant Man – Scott Lang BEFORE NOW! I picked-up a nice VF+ set a little while back…they were fairly hard to find in nice condition then!
THE NEWS: *** Michael Douglas confirmed for Ant-Man:
Actor will play Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man, opposite actor Paul Rudd, the New Ant-Man (Scott Lang).

As the above EBAY auction indicates ($40 showing – 21 bids with 1 day to go), MP #47 & 48 are definitely COMICS HEATING UP!
I will watch this auction, as a gauge to determine the inordinate HEAT of this comic!
You guys hyped these books a little while back, so now is the time to reap your rewards community!
I’m a holder, so I’ll just keep my VF+ issues of MP #47 & 48, and just smile!
BUT, the question is: which book will ultimately ‘retain’ its heat / value? The 1st appearance of the ‘New’ Ant-Man – Scott Lang (Marvel Premiere #47 – 1979), or the first ‘re-appearance’ since the 60’s of the original Ant-Man – Hank Pym (Marvel Feature #4 – 1972)?
Current (random) EBAY auction for a Marvel Feature #4 is below:

LET THE COMIC COMMUNITY DEBATE BEGIN!
Just for the record, my money (literally) is on MP #47 & 48…just my opinion…oh, AND MONEY!

    1. oh man i just saw these at my local hastings a week ago. of course, they’re rearranging the whole store this week so it’s gonna be one hell of a rabbit hunt but thanks for the info!

  2. i always end up spending way way too much time there. NONE I repeat NONE of the employees ‘ive met has any idea how comics work. I’ve actually swapped bags ( and price tags) while talking to one who normally worked movies. the stacks have almost no rhyme or reason to how theyre sorted, meaning i sometimes find stuff thats been optioned for movies or tv months ago for $0.99. Finding books in their stacks that are in NM condition can be a challenge tho for the same reason

    1. I bet. There is a store in the Philadelphia area that is similar to Hastings and that I hit when I travel where I have found copies of the same exact book in the same exact condition for two very different prices. I have always gone to the counter and said to them that they are the same and they have always honored the cheaper price, usually $1.

    2. That’s the problem with most major retail stores. The only requirement for employment with most are, “Are you breathing? Yes, good, you’re hired!” 😉

  3. End of EBAY auction update for: Marvel Premiere #47 (1st New Ant-Man – Scott Lang):

Not a bad sale ($50 end bid – 28 bidders) for a comic that could have been picked-up for a fraction of that price a few months ago.
Thanks to you guys, I jumped on your spek lead and grabbed a VF+ set of MP #47 & 48 a little while back.

    1. Thanks UK. I have been meaning to write this up but my son got sick and as a result I am sick. Will try to get a story up based on this and another tip from am emailer named Richard as soon as i can get out of bed.

  4. psst for those of you who are in the immediate vicinity of a Hasting’s store, but not mine : Superior Spidey #25 Venom LABBIT variant, a joint promotion between Hastings Marvel and whoever makes these cute little toys. Theyre making 6 marvel based Labbits, 1st is Venom. I listed 4 copies and they were gone in about 12 hours, bought another 4 here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/111258055518?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649 & half have sold already. 6 of 8 copies gone in 36 hours. Next Month? Wolverine #1.
    *dun-dun-dun*

      1. nor mine in truth, tho superior spidey 25 was a good read. I’m more intrigued as a secondhand comics seller by the idea of a retailer exclusive variant comic being used to cross promote a retailer exclusive toy. It’s innovative at the least, some might say morally questionable (me), and i highly doubt it’s the last we see of such promotions

  5. Nick, WHAT A FIND! Super tip…I’M ON IT!
    Uoooooo, WOLVERINE next month mamma……Uooooooo!!!!!
Seriously though for me, WOLVERINE AND VENOM, my two favorite comics characters…hands down!!!!!!!…then Spidy, then Thanos, then Carnage, then Sentry, then Sabretooth, then X-23…then THE JOKER’S DAUGHTER!!!!
@ ComicFlipper, This is why your site is so great!
Keep Up The Great Work…Oh yea, get better soon, or put those little plastic gloves on when you type, WE DON’T WANT TO GET SICK TOO!!!!!!! …this was an attempt at humor for those who take this stuff too seriously!

  6. A couple more MP 47 & 48 auctions. I’m not saying these folks will get their BIN prices for these VF/NM books, but it’s good to see folks coming out of the wood works with their personal copies! And it’s a nice feeling knowing I have the same set at very close to the same condition!
Also, with the 1st description stating that this is also the first appearance of Cassie Lang (Scott Lang (new Ant-Man)’s daughter), it just seems interesting to see how big of a part she will have in the movie?
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Marvel-Premiere-47-and-48-VF-NM-/200866790681?pt=US_Comic_Books&hash=item2ec497fd19

Exclusive: I have done a little research surrounding Cassie Lang, and as it turn out, she has an alter ego of sorts. As my research points out, she is none other than the Hero in the Group: The Young Avengers, named: STATURE! And as it turns out, Stature made her 1st appearance in: THE YOUNG AVENGERS #6 (2005 series)!
Obviously, no one knows how the movie information will affect these various back issue prices in the near future, but I spek pretty hard, so I just grabbed 2X full sets of the 2005 series of Young Avengers (1-6) for $11 and $8, respectively, and X6 of Young Avengers #6 for peanuts, as well!
Inquisitively enough, I also saw two other YA sets (1-6) up for auction at $65 +…I wasn’t sure what to think of these two higher priced sets, other than wonder if the auction owners were aware of the Stature connection with the original character about to have a ‘significant’ part in the Ant-Man movie?????????
    Exclusive II: Ant Man (2015)
Early drafts of the script indicate that Cassie may make an appearance alongside her father, Scott Lang, in the live-action feature film Ant Man.
I guess we’ll just have to see how all of this turns out!!!!!!
