Back issue bin hunt: Astonishing Tales #25

Well folks, it is time to hit your favorite retailers ins and see if they have this Bronze Age Gem. Astonishing Tales #25 has been picking up steam and looks like it could pop.
What would make this forty year old book suddenly so desirable that once, in December, copies were just sitting out there cheap, and now in January, the cheap issues have sold and prices are moving from the $30-90 range? Well, that would be the first appearance of the cyborg zombie soldier, Deathlok.
It seems that Deathlok will appear on Marvel’s Agents of Shield on February 4, 2014. While the show itself has gotten lackluster reviews, the books associate with characters appearing in the show have been selling well and seeing an uptick in price.

  1. Nice one Flipper!
I’m almost positive I have this book, as I remember when Deathlok character was all the hype years ago. I’m sure I grabbed this book, but maybe it was a few Deathlok cameo’s that I got. I’ll check my dusty boxes to see what Deathlok stuff I may have.
One question, if this show is going to pop in Feb, WHY DIDN’T WE GET THIS NEWS BACK IN DECEMBER WHEN WE COULD HAVE GRABBED THESE BOOKS FOR PENNIES? Just wondering why it seems we’ve missed the train on this one?
Like you said, EBAY prices are already $30-90 for this book!
I hope I did stash this copy away years ago. We’ll see in a bit!

    1. Because as much as I try to stay up on everything, some things slip past me. I just recently saw that he was going to be on Agents of Shield, so I watched the books for about a week to see if there was any movement.
I will try to get these out quicker next time.

  2. This version of Deathlok (Mike Peterson) first appearance was in the prestige format mini series from 1990.

      1. Mike Peterson is the character on the show that will become Deathlok and he is clearly based on Michael Collins. The name was probably changed to keep it a secret. My guess is that Astonshing Tales #25 will always be more desirable than Deathlok #1.

  3. I was going to spec on this book several months ago, on the how it was undervalued, NM copies going for 30.00 on Ebay. Deathlok traditionally has not been a popular character even with Marvel pushing the character every 5 years or so- I never expected this. NM copies- none on Ebay. VF copies now going for 90-100. Wow. I guess this comic is scarcer than I thought.

  4. I just picked up a VF+ copy for $27. A bit much, but I checked my coffers, and I didn’t have this book. Crazy, but I thought I got this book years ago. There you go!
I’ve got it now! I missed the boat on this one, but hopefully the price keeps rising due to the popularity (finally) of the character.
Does anyone think the price will continue to rise?

    1. They bring Deathlock back every few years. I think he is a great character and remember loving to draw him as a kid when I was copying out of the Official Marvel Handbook. Have to see if the character catches on with the tv crowd.

      1. Yea, I know! Dangit, I hope I didn’t waist $30!
We’ll see. At least when Deathlok pops up again in 5 years, I’ll know I have his 1st appearance!
