Comics Picks of the week for delivery 1/29/14

Each week hundreds of new comics come out. Each week we pour through the listings to pick the ones we feel stand out among the crowd. Here are this weeks picks of the week.

The Cult following:
Serenity: Leaves on the Wind– People Love Joss Whedon and people love Firefly and Serenity. This one is written by Joss’ brother Zach.
The MUST pick up after issue #2:
Black Science #3 Issue 2 sold out and quickly shot up in price. This book is a genuine hit and print runs on each subsequent issue will probably rise. Early adopters of the series will reap the rewards.
The outside chance:
Furious #1– New series from the creators of Mice Templar. Staring into a fractured mirror of her life, the world’s first superhero, Furious, seeks to atone for her past sins by doling out rage-fueled justice! But the spotlight of our celebrity-obsessed media threatens to undo her noblest efforts and expose her true identity before she can achieve redemption.
The one everyone is buying:
Superior Spider-man #26 The end is near for Spider-Ock. More and more clues are being dropped about Peter’s eventual return. People do love this series, and the variants are doing well on the secondary market. If this stays cannon, then these books will rise in value.
Saga and East of West also drop new issues this week, so they are always on my go to list as well.
That’s it for this week. Let us know what you are spec-ing on.

  1. THREAD-JACK!
It has happened…Cartoon Network are true to their word. I got this email from my UK supplier that I ordered my Powerpuff Girls #6 Yoon Subscription cover from:
    Hi
    This just came in: „Product Update (1/27/2014): Cover artist change from Mimi Yoon to Derek Charm”;
Do you still want the comics, now that the cover artist has changed?
The comic will be released next month, so I could order as many copies as you want.
let me know if the cover artist change is a problem and how many you want ( on top of your order and the orders from our regular customers I will probably only buy 1 or 2 extra copies)
and then I will order your copies.
    yours

I’m going to canx my order, as obviously the only reason I wanted the comics was because of the ensuing controversy the Yoon cover would cause!
Anyway, NEXT on the spek ladder…

  2. I had no intentions of getting that comic even if they went ahead with the “sex sells” cover..
It’s a kids comic, it was a bad idea if you ask me in the first place to try and spice it up so all the creepy old men buy it! 😉

    1. I’d have to say, if that’s how Quicksilver is going to be portrayed in the movie, that’s pretty horrid if you ask me.

      1. I’m not a huge fan at all, but Quicksilver does look pretty hoaky in the pics.
I checked out the X DOFP trailer, and I have to say, I may check it out when it comes out for rental or something.

  3. I don’t see anything wrong with the power puff cover… Not saying I would buy it. Definitely getting Black Science. Speaking of superior spiderman, there are JSC connecting variant covers for issue #31 (the finale, unfortunately) up for preorder. These aren’t incentive variants, so not sure if they will sky rocket. But worth a look at 35% off.

    1. It’s probably going to start leveling and or dying off some for JD. I also wouldn’t say according to the pics that the Batman Family #6 you linked to is definitely not a NM+ copy, it’s too rough around the outer edges in my opinion.

      1. Yea, Drew I thought the same thing about the condition…din’t look NM+ to me either!
Yea, I was just hoping JD stayed around for a while. But the whole crappy story line in both CW 23 & JD 3D was atrocious, to say the least!
One was just a gutter-rat, and the other was just a lunatic who liked dead flesh on her face…Yikes! Pre-school story anyone??????
Yea, I thought DC definitely dropped the ball with JD. Just by the amount of folks who genuinely wanted the JD 3D books, shows me that there COULD HAVE been a very big following of JD if DC had been bothered to do their homework AND WENT TO GET THE MAN WHO KNEW EVERYTHING ABOUT JD…Mr. Bob Rozakis to write that one-shot! Then of course they could have gained steam to do a mini, and then an on-going, and then the clamor for TV shows and movies…blah, blah! I think DC missed out on about $1 Billion revenue / sales by screwing up just one character.
IMHO, with the entire community tiring of the over-hyped X-related movies these days, I certainly think there is a huge gap for a character like JD. I really don’t think DC has done anything to spark the interest of the die-hard Joker fans…let’s face it, other than Batman, I think the Joker is the company’s flagship character…why can’t they see that?
Joker & his Daughter reunion…fill in the gaps from JD back in the 80’s until now.
I guess that’s why I UTTERLY HATE DC!
Anyway, she’s dead to us know…just kick dirt over her and move on! Or, just chuck more JD 3D’s in the microwave like Bleeding Cool did!!!!!!!! Still classic!

      2. Yeah, I’ll pick up JD #1 to check it out but I don’t have much interest probably going beyond that, unless #1 is really really good with a good story, that’d be the only way I continue picking it up.

        1. At this point, they have to do something with the character. The interest has been over the top to just let her languish around.
By the way, I know you turned me on to “Final Plague”. The story is great, the art is so-so, but the quality of the books once they get to the retailer are horrible. I have yet to find a copy of any of the issues over f/vf…. Even the latest issue I went to two shops and they all were dinged up. Haven’t seen that problem with any other books from the company (Zombie Tramp kind of has the same problem but not to this extent.)

      3. Yeah, I’ve noticed that as well and it bugs me. I got 2 #1 issues and at best one is probably a 9.4 with just a few spine creases. So, find one of these in 9.8 and it’s got to be worth an ounce of gold for sure.. 😉
Perhaps we should petition them and ask them what’s up? Why is it just this comic arriving so beat up at every comic store (and that’s every comic store across the nation)?

  4. @ComicFlipper,
I’m sorry, but I have high-jacked this entire post with mindless drivel. Can you wipe all of these comments out so there is once again a clean slate for the original ‘comics pick of the week’ post?
Sorry folks, but I need ROOM TO DOOM when I get started!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    OUT!

  5. FYI, Hastings (gohastings.com) apparently has more “Night of the Living Deadpool #1” Hastings Variants available on their website again.

    1. I like Millar but I don’t like the 4 issues a year crap.. makes me start to lose interest. Perhaps if he stopped starting new comics while he’s writing existing ones, he’d actually complete more series before the new ones pop up in his head. Some also seem to start out good, then lose their appeal… Secret Service was good, then it just turned out to sort of goofy and seemed rushed at the end. I was really disappointed in that one. Apparently it’s still being turned into a movie.

      1. I think that is his biggest problem, he is more focused on movies, his own and the work he is doing on Marvel films, than he is his own comics. If he would focus in one or two projects at a time he would have a more consistent release schedule.
My other big complaint is his $4.99 final issues. It drives me nuts that he jacks the price on the last issue of each series knowing you have the other 11 or so and he has you hooked.

      2. Yeah, couldn’t agree more. Make comic, hope it turns into movie for more money. Before finished with comic, start another one in hopes it turns into another movie for more money or profit, etc….

  6. Look, I absolutely adore KICK ASS! I love the plot, I love the sequencing, I love the characters (and the way Millar developed them)…that to me is classic story telling at its best! And of course with my main man on pencils, JRJR, yea, I was on board with Kick Ass from the start. Other than the movies, I haven’t read much Kick Ass lately, so I’ll have to get back into them and see if Millar is still committed to the development of that story, and not off on some tangent to make it all sync-up with his other Millar-World books, which that’s what it seems he is trying to accomplish!
Yea Drew, I think Nemesis is still being spek’d as a future movie commodity as well.
Ah man, when that news initially dropped years ago, I rushed out and grabbed 6 or 7 complete sets of Nemesis…and still have them all!
What a sucker…OR SUPER SPEK’ER, just depends on what happens with the title!
Oh, and of course I went out and grabbed 8 complete sets of the original Kick Ass…still have them! Not sure if they will ever take off, as the movies are well entrenched into the comic community now.
I think I will just send a set or two to JRJR and get them signed. Add to my JRJR signed collection!
