No one denies Wolverine’s first cameo is in Incredible Hulk #180, that his first full appearance is in Incredible Hulk #181, and that the first prototype for Wolverine is in Foom #2 but it turns out that there is another appearance early on.
Well appearance may not be the correct word, you see, Wolverine shows up in an add for Incredible Hulk #181 in the pages of Daredevil #115. The preview ad predates Incredible Hulk #181.
The book is currently creeping up on $40. This is why I never get rid of old comics, no matter what. Things always seem to have a weird way of getting heat.

This ad was also featured in:
Thor (1966) #229
Marvel Premiere (1972) #19
My understanding is that all three of these books came out in the week before Hulk #181’s release.
Thanks John
I have marvel premier 19. Not sure an ad should count as a preview though.
I am not into the first appearance as an ad but people buy them up.
Daredevil 115 may be worth slightly more than Daredevil 101-120. But upside potential is limited by demand for content or significance. A small ad isn’t much.
A lot of what I am able to sell is because of upticks like this bi have tens of thousands of comics and jump at the chance to sell books like this at above normal prices, even at limited future growth potential, I will take the immediate profit.
This ad stuff is ridiculously stupid IMO.
Oh I agree. It does sell though and that is part of the point.
Yes, I understand. It makes the book hotter than average. With all the good that has come from Ebay and on-line sales for our hobby, this type of thing is some of the bad stuff. Selling them as an ‘early-ad’ for Wolverine is one thing. But presenting them as first appearances, as is done in a lot of these auctions, is pretty sad. I don’t expect that experienced collectors get taken in by this kind of thing, but I feel for the poor newbie who wastes their cash. It is also bad for our hobby as it does not educate new collectors as to what a cameo or first appearance really means.
There is a line, which I won’t cross, and you are right. I am not touting this as first appearance, I have noted it is an early appearance, if you count an ad as an appearance. Hopefully newbies are finding their way to sites like this which clearly spell out what the first appearances are. But at the same time, for the seller, it is a good time to move books they may not have been able to in the past.
I think it depends on where you find the image of a character and what you define first appearance as. Is it stupid because you are bogged down by a line of though that has had a grip on you for long time? We all should be open to new arguments or be willing to make a proper counter argument. The fact is, markets change. Sometimes it takes a long time for markets to correct themselves. The comic market is no different. In this case we have the cover to 181 and an image of Wolverine, in print, prior to Hulk 181. That qualifies as a first appearance to me!
According to that logic, the OA for the ad in DD115 is the 1st appearance of Wolverine. Ads previews, novelty stuff will never be main stream in comic collecting. If ads and previews are 1sts, why are we all not loading up on Previews magazine every month?
basically this article says ‘most people are idiots’. i cant prove it, but i bet the green goblin had a preview ad prior to his first appearance.
It is not calling people idiots at all. It is pointing out an interesting novelty. In no way to I ever insult anyone’s intelligence. I pointed out a book that was heating up due to an ad. Point is, the books are moving and I point to where they are. People are free to make their own decisions in things. There are Wolverine completists who would find this interesting.
Agreed. When I used to collect basketball cards, I also picked up cards of other players if Jordan or Bird were also in the shot. Had to collect them all – even if it wasn’t truly their card.
maybe i said it wrong… basically it is pointing out that some people will buy anything that most people would just find insane
This has been going on for at least 2 months now. Lol at whoever is buying this Daredevil book. But kudos to whoever already has one and got some dumb a** to overpay for it. I got a bunch of previews catalogs if someone wants to make an offer. There has to be some first appearances in there somewhere lol.
Look and see what the first one to market did with the first Walking Dead.
walking dead preview is more than just an Advertisement!
But it was still an issue of Previews.
Some are noteworthy. Also comics like Todd, Sheltered, East of West and others have full color previews within. Many of the Diamond previews have inserts that are damn tough to find( Preacher Preview! ). People want to crap all over the idea of a character appearing prior to appearing in story but a first appearance is not defined that way no matter what the market says.
This is ridiculous and seriously retarded. So why don’t we pull out all those old copies of previews and start listing all the ads as first appearances. This is the kind of stuff that turns new collectors off. An Ad Isn’t a First Appearance. Perhaps there are idiots out there who count an ad as a first appearance, I however am not one of them and feel this is a horrible trend this site and others are contributing to. Nothing wrong with flipping books and speculating but here has to be a line drawn somewhere and now is the time. I can see a preview qualifying as a first but definitely not an ad.
I am not promoting a Previews magazine as a first appearance, however, The Walking Dead one has done well. I am pointing out a trend. Is it crazy that an ad in Daredevil 115 is causing the price to rise, sure, but it is still a trend. The book gained in price. The purpose of the site has always been to show books that are gaining in value for whatever reason. I did not cause the book to gain in value but pointed it out.
Clearly this has been a topic that has divided people. Some people are on the side that it is a legitimate appearance, others are very much against it. Regardless, it is a good time to see Daredevil 115 if you have them. I am always looking to slim down my collection which numbers well over 30,000 books (yes) and always like to sell when a book is at too dollar.
My point was it’s a ridiculous trend and sites like this are contributing to it.
And simply put, my point is that the book has garnered attention and has moved up in price. No denying it has, for whatever reason.
As I stated earlier, some of the Diamond catalogs have actually previews of the upcoming titles. Saga did this. In my opinion that is a first appearance. It is NOT AN AD.
Oh and Foom 2 is a wolverine prototype and everyone agrees? I beg to differ.
Everyone agrees is slight hyperbole but in cases like this the majority of the comic community decides and a book that went from not selling to a several hundred dollar book seems to be commonly accepted now as a prototype.
I collect Grendel. Have been a huge fan since my teens. I have purchased things like the Comico Slip Case because Grendel is on it. No story, it is just a slipcase for comics. People who are into characters will buy things because the character is in it and on it. Stupid, sure. But my Grendel collection is housed in multiple Comico slip cases. Personal preference.
Still disagree with the wolverine prototype. As long as sellers don’t market an ad as a first appearance it’s all good.
Agreed. I don’t think anyone would as IH 189 still predates this, but nothing surprises me with eBay.
Not sure why people want to get upset with Anthony for pointing out a book we can flip and make money off of. That’s the whole point of this website.
I hate previews and not sure why people want to collect them, but that is their choice and I’ll sell it to them if I can turn a profit. I’m not going to lie or deceive people by saying that this is so and so’s first appearance. But some people like to collect everything wolverine or spiderman, so they want this ad in their collection. I’m not going to lose sleep selling it to them.
Thanks Shima.
