Comics Picks of the week for delivery 6/18/14

These past couple of weeks have been full of surprises. There have been a lot of books popping write after Wednesday. This week could end up being no different.
Each week hundreds of books are released to the shelves of comic shops. Each one has potential, some live up to it. We go through the listings and give our picks for what we think will heat up. Here are this weeks picks of the week:
The pick of the week:
Wicked + The Divine #1 (Cover A Jamie McKelvie & Matt Wilson) Sold out going into Wednesday is always a good sign. Getting talked about a lot. Had a Bryan Lee O’Malley variant which would be the one to get if you can find it.
The Small(er) press gem:
Winterworld #1– You will hear more about this book in the future. I promise you. The subscription variant is sold out going into Wednesday, and the regular is almost sold out. This is a very real end of the world / post apocalyptic story from Chuck Dixon.
The Outsider Chance:
Thomas Alsop #1 – Think Dr. Strange / John Constantine / Harry Dresden meets Hunter S. Thompson
The Cheap Gamble:
Strain #1 (#1 for $1 Edition) – Come on, for a buck, the show starts on July 13th. Worth the pick up just to see how good the book is, and it is.
The More Expensive Gamble:
Escapo HC – It’s Paul Pope, the king of indy comics. He has a huge following. This book was originally published in 1999 and has been out of print and hard to find since.

    1. Yeah, I picked it up myself. One local shop had 1 copy left of Cover C, so it’s likely the cover to obtain.

      1. You seem to mention multiple shops sometimes. Do you drive around on Wednesday and hit up multiple stores?

      2. Most of the time, yes. There’s literally two shops on the same road about a mile apart from one another. Well, one of them is a Dragon’s Lair where it’s mostly fantasy games and card games but they sell new comic releases as well (with a back stock of the last few months as well).
There’s Austin Books And Comics as well that isn’t too far from these but it’s not on the way to work for me so I hit that one up once a week or so.
I usually hit up the Dragon’s Lair cause they order most of the variants and usually sell them for retail cover price, not marked up. I get my regular pull issues from Capstone here in Austin.

  1. Nice. They are really spread out here in Charlotte, so I only go to the one close by my office on Wednesdays. Sometimes I go to the smaller one on Saturdays, but they mainly carry Marvel and DC. They told me the other publishers don’t sale well for them.

    1. I’m heading to Asheville this weekend. Any good comic book stores there or dive stores? I appreciate the feedback. Thanks

      1. Not that I know of. Heroes Con will be in Charlotte, so any comic shop in this region will be pretty barren.
