We always appreciate Larry from Larryscomics.net stopping by to drop speculator goodness on us. His past few weeks have been dead on. Here is Larry’s Comics pick of the week
Before I make my pick.
A public service announcement, an anti-speculator-y pick:
Don’t buy DC Comics Grayson #1
Just. Don’t. Buy it.
Make them respect THE source material.
Send a message.
It’s the re-packaging of our nerd culture for modest budget tv source material.
Publishers are now terraforming characters to better suit other media.
Dick Grayson first appeared as Robin in Detective Comics #38 1940, as Nightwing in New Titans #44 & tomorrow as an ordinary, generic homogenized action hero in Grayson #1.
Lame.
Ok this weeks speculator-y pick:
Spread #1?, Too easy, It’s a lazy pick because it’s THAT good:
Death Vigil #1?, Too many talking heads.
Sherwood Texas #1? Sons of Anarchy was hot a year ago.
The Life After #1? Too obscure.
Waste of Time #1? Odd size.
My pick:
100TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL #1 SPIDER-MAN
MARVEL COMICS
(W) Sean Ryan (A/CA) In-Hyuk Lee
• It’s 100 years after the wall-crawler’s creation, but when the Kingpin has taken Spider-Man’s ultra-powerful techno-symbiote suit, Spider-Man will need to prove once again why he is the world’s greatest super hero.
Why? retailers have not been ordering a lot of these 100th anniversary comics, & rightfully so. They are for the most part mundane. This one is special. Fans will NEVER be able to resist this Kingpin as Venom storyline. There are two covers, & you will know the one to buy. This is going to sell out fast.
This will NEVER be more than a $10 book, but it will sell forever. ( If Kingpin-Venom ever returns, it’ll be a Monsta )
Blue chip characters. Great painted art. Under-ordered.
Going on vacation this week, & internet access is “sketchy”, so Here’s next weeks pick:
Like the larger than life George Herman Ruth Jr, I’m calling my shot:
Way back, Waaaay back. Waaaaaaay back: Home run Baby!”
LIFE WITH ARCHIE COMIC #36
ARCHIE COMIC PUBLICATIONS
Five covers, all order what you want.
FIONA STAPLES cover
MIKE ALLRED cover
FRANCESCO FRANCAVILLA cover
ADAM HUGHES cover
RAMON PEREZ cover ( my favorite )
The comic market will ultimately decide which is most desirable.
(W) Paul Kupperberg (A) Pat Kennedy & Various (CA) Adam Hughes
History is in the making in this epic finale to the acclaimed series LIFE WITH ARCHIE, as America’s most beloved character makes the ultimate sacrifice to save a friend. The unthinkable happens: Archie Andrews dies! Fans will experience an epic tale of Archie’s future sure to make headlines, generate discussion and stand as one of the most-talked about Archie stories of all time. Do not miss this game-changing tale of love, friendship and true heroism.
How on planet Earth is this not going to get mainstream media coverage?!
It’s NOT possible.
If its a slow news day its going to be everywhere.
Death of the Icon of the checkout aisle that most of the mainstream public recognize.
This book is going to be BIG.
Biggest book of Summer BIG.
The direct market has more eyes on Archie than ever before result of the genius Afterlife series. Add that to the mainstream public flooding into the 1.900 remaining direct market shops to get a copy of the “collectors item” they just saw on the news.
Archie Publications knows this will be big.
They will anticipate demand. They’ll overprint. They’ll fall short.
Supply will not meet demand.
People will be scrambling.
If you speculate on modern comic books.
You. Want. This.

Isn’t the Life with Archie #36 next week though? Or is this your picks for this week and next week?
Oh I’m an idiot.. now I see where you say “next weeks pick” as well.. ughh!
that francavilla cover is awesome…
All Francavilla covers are awesome.. 😉
That is pretty much true
Has anyone heard of the comic book “How I made the World”? Is it a good pick up?
I have heard of it but have not heard much about it. I can picture the cover which is like a note book (composition book). It is a small press book and these things can sell out, I do not see a lot of heat on it though (but have been wrong before)
I seen a couple at my local comic book shop they had five of them but I never heard of it before
Besides the Archie, my pick of the week next week is Rat Queens #7 Cover B Incentive Virgin cover. I can’t even find what this cover looks like, no one seems to have a picture of it and I’ve only found it for sale on Midtown’s website.
Hmmm.. is this one a sleeper that will be under ordered? I think it’s trying to slip through the cracks unlike the Manifest Destiny #7 Cover B that got hyped up a month before it was released..
For once, larry and I agree on next weeks pick
Any luck with the Spidey 100th anniversary? I grabbed a couple online but nothing at the LCS. I didn’t see any cover B variants at my three stores. I’m curious if Larry was referring to the A or B cover in his prediction.
pretty sure it was the venom b cover
Both covers are backorder at Diamond
The venom /Kingpin cover is the one to get.
My shop sold out too.
No Marvel fan can resistt that one.
Seriously loved the other cover though. Now I have to go back and get the Kingpin Venom cover
I grabbed Cover B myself.
All five covers of Life with Archie #36 are backorder with Diamond.
( Get ready for one of those grinning Terry Hoknes photos in his office/lair with ALL the copies next week )
I will do my grinning Spread photo from my lair aka Terry Hoknes on Friday I think I have more copies of Spread than any other non retailer at the moment
Cool on that. $
I was embarrassed to make that my pick of the week.
TOO obvious…
Yes obvious but sweet. I have been looking forward to the book since the NYCC preview came out.
Justin had me at Luther #1…
I was a big fan of Luther. Justin’s writing and Tradd’s art were perfect for the hyper-violent story.
