THE DAKOIT WEEKLY SPECULATION HITLIST: Back Issues

From our friend Dakoit at Dakoit’s Comic Book Speculation for fun Blog
PAST RELEASES
1 a). X-Force #2 (Marvel), $1.00
Released: September 1991
WHY? This is a book I cringe on, but has been on mine and other big time speculators’ radar for a year now. This is Deadpool’s second appearance. With huge movie news last week, I intentionally omitted posting anything on New Mutants #98 (Deadpool’s first appearance) yesterday, because as this blog is for the budget speculator, that comic is now well beyond attainability (currently at $450-$900). However, X-force #2 is a book that is not. Once big websites (bleedingcool.com) got a hold of this news, well…then it has the potential to be worth its weight in gold. And bam! $50 dollar comic.
1 b) Deadpool #1 vol.2(Marvel), $1.00
Released: January 1997
WHY? While we all know Deadpool as the wise cracking, third wall-breaking, eccentric anti-hero, he wasn’t always the ‘Merc with a mouth’. Joe Kelly and Ed McGuinness were the ones to fully develop his character in the excellent second solo series of character.
2. Starlight #1(Image), $2.99
Released: March 2014
WHY? The Mark Millar recently released comic, Starlight now espoused into FOX studios as a motion picture takes on a screen writer:

3 a). Sandman: Master of Dreams #4 (DC), $1.50
Released: April 1989
3 b.) Lucifer #1 (DC), 2.50
Released: June 2000
WHY? While Sandman gets the motion picture treatment, his co-star Lucifer, will star in his own TV series. The bastion of hell was first introduced to us in the pages of Sandman #4. He also held a eponymous solo title for 75 issues.

4) Legends # 3(DC), .75
Released: January 1987
WHY? Suicide Squad gets movie director, David Ayer.
To those who have followed my articles for the past year, will know that this Legends #3 issue is quite old news. I was among the first to suggest it as a budget speculation pick way back in post#56. However, here it is again for those who missed it the first time around! Legends #3, introduces us to the first modern Suicide Squad and the master mind of the covert villain team, Amanda Waller.
In addition, I’ve also listed the various volumes of Suicide Squad #1, because you never know what iteration of the team they will lean to. Logic allows us to believe that Harley Quinn will be a shoo-in, but anything’s possible. Also notice how difficult it will be to get the 1987 issue in NM+ grade (jet-black cover).

As of now, Starlight #1 is just sitting on Ebay with not much activity. I think Millar comics are just not popular in terms of speculation anymore. With one of his properties The Secret Service also coming out into film in a month (oddly titled: Kingsman: The Secret Service) that book is also also sitting with no bids and BIN prices at $20 have not shown no activity. So from the evidence presented, you’re thinking the Dakoit says don’t bother with the Starlight comic right? Wrong.
If you haven’t gotten a copy of Starlight, I may persuade you to grab a copy or two. Here’s why: this movie will be a galaxy spanning epic. If it hits a chord with fans when the first commercial hits, this book will heat up. Also as a bonus, these books apparently seem to be dollar bin fodder right now, so you’ll be grabbing them for practically nothing.
Sandman #4 and Lucifer #1 are both heating up right now. SM#4 is not selling less than 30 bucks on Ebay and some prices considerably higher. While Lucifer is around the same at BIN prices, but there are many on bids with decent activity. I say you try hunting these bad boys at your local comic shop. Sandman #4 will be a hard find, because most folks have grabbed the first 10 issues or so, because of the film, but Lucifer #1 may still be attainable at unsuspecting LCS who aren’t aware of the news yet. Maybe also bid on Ebay to snag a copy at a decent price while the hype is still inchoate.
Surprisingly, there aren’t many Legends #3 left on Ebay in high grade, a couple selling for $15-30 and some for bids. The disadvantage of this book is that it was heavily printed, and there are many copies still out there even in discount sections. The good thing is, if there is enough popularity, even a heavily printed book can appreciate in valued considerably (here’s looking at you New Mutants #98!), so I suggest still be on the look out, and while you’re at it, try and find some very high grade copies of SS #1 (1987) because of course, they will be the most difficult to find in pristine condition. That cover is excellent by the way, it has a cinema poster quality to it doesn’t it?
While I was reticent of ever posting X-Force #2 on this blog–considering a book that didn’t even need a ‘speculator mind’ to understand its potential value, I have nonetheless given in. I have additionally, posted another book which is far superior and very much lower printed than the poorly crafted former Liefeld book. Although the benefit of the former, is that it should be available in truck loads of unsuspecting back issue discount bins for the taking, if you hunt around. Both books are already super hot and the movie hype has already cemented Deadpool as arguably the most popular character of the last 20 years. Grab X-Force #2 and Deadpool #1 vol.2. While you still can. Deadpool #1 vol.2 now sells on Ebay for about $100.

  1. FYI, Midtown has Starlight 1 in their back issues for 2.50. All 3 covers if anyone’s looking for ’em.

  2. I’m skipping Starlight, just not feeling it for some reason. I may be mistaken but I don’t recall Kick Ass books jumping too much in value.
Loving the Legends #3, that movie would be awesome.
I am also frozen on Deadpool related books unless a miracle happens and I stumble on a NM 98 for a bargain. I have seen the prices start to drop a bit, tread lightly.
I am crossing my fingers for this one, yet if Deadpool and Suicide Squad movies are in the works it’s a matter of time when Harley Quinn gets a feature film. Batman Adventures #12 is a pricey book now. Add in a movie announcement and its most likely crossing $1000.
Just my rants and wish though.

    1. Yeah, I’m onboard w Harley cuz you know that has to be coming. I’m also staying away Deadpool related specs from the 90s unless it’s just a crazy bargin. Just wayyyyy too many out there for a steady market IMHO. I’ve learned my lesson from holding an overproduced item once the popularity wanes just a bit… I actually think now is the time to sell the early Deadpool books and reinvest in other key lower printed books if spec’ing on Deadpool unless you own 9.8s… Just my crazy rants. ?

  3. Lucifer has a flipbook preview with Brain K Vaughn’ s Swamp Thing , just like the stapeless Preacher preview. Its not ease to find but most likely still cheap.
