Larry's Comics Pick of the Week for 11/19/14

Speculation: investment involving high risk but also the possibility of high
profits.
I have always believed that the icing on the cake of comics is the fact that sometimes they are worth money. They’re entertaining and potentially valuable. I’m a reader first, but have always played the market a bit.
I love investing in modern comics, It’s an endeavor I began in 1988 & have enjoyed incredible success along with horrific losses. It’s an exciting emotional roller coaster that starts a new ride every Wednesday. It’s one of my favorite things in this world.
Here are my speculator-y picks of the week:
inhumans
INHUMAN (2014) #8
Rating: Rated T+
Writer: Charles Soule
Cover Artist: Ryan Stegman
* We know Black Bolt and Maximus have been involved with the New Avengers’ activities, but that’s not close to the whole story. * The Boltagon brothers are in trouble and we at the House of Ideas know it ends very badly for one of them!
WHY take a chance?
This book got on my radar, because out of the blue, Marvel doubled my order. FREE.
I’m a suspicious bastard. Why would they do that? What are they trying to promote?
I think I figured it out.
This is the first appearance of the Inhuman Codex., an artifact containing the long lost sum of the Inhuman genome.
Who cares right?
Marvel cares & they want you to care.
Fox has the right to make movies about any marvel mutants. ( A deal Marvel would love to break ) Well, NO MORE MUTANTS! Instead we will be getting more Inhumans.
It all ties into Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, upcoming Marvel movies & comics. Look for the Codex on TV soon. Look for it in the movies. It will be re-writing some of your favorite characters origins too.
It’s a way to stop Marvel intellectual property bleeding.
Going forward all new characters can have “Inhuman” origins, completely protected from Fox.
It’s a KEY issue.

ROT & RUIN #3
IDW PUBLISHING
(W) Jonathan Maberry (A) Tony Vargas (CA) Alex Ronald
Benny, Nix, Lilah and Chong are taken in by Farmer John and his community. They’re offered shelter, protection, and food if they stay. The only hitch is what they will have to do in order to earn their keep. In the world of the Rot & Ruin nothing is ever what it seems -and ‘horror’ comes in all shapes and sizes.
WHY take a chance?
#1-Nipple on cover.
#2-Dual collectible. Jonathan Maberry fans & comic fan bases competing for copies.
#3-Low print run on book with a media deal.
#4-Nipple on cover.
#5-Killer Vanity fair homage cover
It’s an easy ten dollar bill

PREMATURE E-SPECULATION:
( dollar bin books that will deliver)
Take a chance on me
Gonna do my very best, baby can’t you see
Gotta put me to the test, take a chance on me
Take a chance, take a chance, take a chance on me:
1st appearance of Julia Pennyworth, the long-lost daughter of Alfred, Bruce Wayne / Batman’s
butler.
Julia has had a key role in Batman Eternal & Batman recently. Publishers are craving positive role model, strong female characters in the wake of the recent fan girl explosion..
I’m speculating that Scott Snyder has plans for her.
Risk the dollar on Detective Comics #501

  1. Generally, debut of characters (if popular) tend to have more potential than special covers or objects. For examples, Action 1, Superman 53 (cover) and Superman 61 (kryptonite). Price of special issues are worth more but might be limited by value of non-special issues…

  2. I haven’t seen last night’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. yet, so I don’t want to click that link, lol, but as soon as you mention an Inhuman Codex, it reminded me of The Obelisk from S.H.I.E.L.D. I’m wondering if it has similar capabilities to Terrigen Mist in the show, to unlock Inhuman potential; and that maybe somehow Lucy Lawless is till alive after touching it, lol. But anyhow, I’ve been reading Inhumans all along, I am a long-time fan… maybe not as long as some others… my intro to them was the 90’s Fantastic Four cartoon and it was SO SAD when Crystal & Johnny became trapped on opposite sides of the “Negative Barrier”, lol. That got me seeking out their books. And when the Marvel Knights series came along, with Jae Lee & Paul Jenkins, I wished that would become an Ongoing.
In reading the current Inhumans, and with the movie buzz in mind, I am wondering if The Unnamed or Lineage will become a core character to be used in the film. Both are recent characters, with cheap first appearances (for now). The Unnamed is a long-lost Inhuman ruler-turned-enemy they sealed away, and Lineage is a former mobster transformed by the Terrigen Bomb to now have a body that grows pieces of past Inhumans into it, along with their memories & knowledge for him to use.
