Each week, hundreds of new comics hit the shelves, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we feel have the best shot of heating up. Here are our Picks of the week for delivery 1/28/15.
I have to say, when I have bad days at work, it helps me remember why I love buying and selling comics so much. I but to read, but I also buy to sell, to buy to read. Work is just work, but comics, man that is fun, the hunt, the capture, the sale. The fun of reading. Escapism!!!!!
Anyway, and I digress, our picks of the week.
The Small Press Gem:
Munchkin #1– Boom Box book that ties into a fun card game. I got stuck manning a homeless shelter once during a hurricane. A couple of the guys from Red Cross had this game. We stayed up all night playing it (we had to stay up all night anyway). Humerous, with an already built in fan base. Not to mention this book is sold out. There is a second print coming out and it has not even hit the shelves yet. There are several variant covers including an awesome Tyler Jenkins cover, a Tenth Anniversary cover, and a 1:20 cover to be on the look out for.
The Pick of the Week:
Effigy #1 I like Tim Seeley. This book is Vertigo, which has been putting out great books again. It has it all, former child star, sex tape, murder. What else could you want. Plus, it is “holding the line at $2.99” which is always a plus for me. Won’t be chased after as much as a new Image #1, DC books are slow burns and don’t sell out as quickly, but when they do, look out.
The Can’t Miss:
Batman #38– Snyder is on fire with this book, which has had a shot in the arm with the return of the Joker. The covers are classic too. I really need to see where this is going and I haven’t said that about Batman in a while, even with Snyder writing.
The New Image #1:
The Dead and the Dying #1Jonathan Hickman’s creator owned stuff is a can’t miss for me. His writing is just top notch and he brings something extra to the table on his own books. High Adventure meets Respite care! A murder at a wedding reveals a fifty year-old secret. At great cost, a man with a dying wife is given the opportunity to save her. A lost tribe is reborn in another time. Seemingly disparate events that force relics from the Greatest Generation to come together for one last hurrah.
The Crunchy Grindhouse one:
Bitch Planet #2– I have loved the exploitation movement in comics hearkening back to the cheap, sleazy Grindhouse movies of the 70’s and 80’s. Bitch Planet has the feel down. Good reading, should catch on well with the female readers as well. Funny and brutal.
That is it for us this week. Let us know which books you are spec-ing on

Yeah, I was gonna mention Batman as well.. It’s the only DC I pickup for the most part (excluding Vertigo).
And yes, I love that Vertigo pretty much keeps their titles at the $2.99 price and don’t release a bazillion variants.
zero year was terrible, but this new arc is pretty damn good.
I’m trying to keep the pull list down and was trying to decide between dying and the dead and effigy. Effigy was a $2.99 title which I love, but dying and the dead was an oversized issue for $4.50 with a normal price of $3.50. First world problem type decisions. I ended up with the Dying and the Dead. IF Effigy is still on the shelf next week I’m going to try and show a little restraint but I’ve failed at that in the past.
I got both. Out for $50 this week so it was a cheap week.
I still might pick it up. I’m trying…trying….trying to trade wait.
