Just got word that the Silk #2 Phantom Variants which are an homage to Amazing Spider-man #300 and #301 are live. The color copies look fantastic, as does the pencil covers we have already given a review of. These ship around March 18th.

So here is the deal they can be ordered straight from eBay (Third Eye Comics has them listed)
Silk #2 Color Phantom Variant
Silk #2 Black and White Phantom Variant
Or You can go through Larry from Larry’s Comics (Larry is the mastermind behind the phantom variant program) on his CBSA G+ site. Larry is offering a deal on them as well.
Either way, this one looks like another winner.

  1. Wow. These seem kinda pricey out of the gate. Guess they’re trying to maximize profit after the Gwen Stacys jumped so fast. Is the PR smaller or the typical 3k? Prolly a pass for me.

  2. Do we know the artist for this covert? I am taking the Silk #1 Lee variant and two Spider-Gwen #1 phantoms (among other books) to ECCC for the double sign CGCSS royal treatment and these would be a nice add if it’s Stacey or someone else there.

      1. Since he is going to be there, would like to hear opinions on whether you or anyone else feels it is worth it. I think the Spider-Gwen phantoms and my Descender variants are but what about these? Would make a nice compliment as was said to the SG phantoms.

  3. Wish Third Eye offered combined shipping to Canada. Was hoping to get both but just can’t warrant spending $30 to ship with the exchange on top of that. Would have been $100+ for the pair. Settled on the colour.

  4. I secured some from my normal outlet for 9.99 and was gonna say Larry has them cheap also, but I see that was in the original post. That’s what I get for clicking on the first link and not reading the whole post. ?

  5. Unlike the Spider-Gwen I like the b/w a little bit better than the color. I ended up with 3 color and 2 b/w, one set for the PC and I got these for less than the Spider-Gwen’s.

  6. It concerns me that retailers are charging so much for variants right out of the gate my local LCS’s in Montreal were charging between 40 and 60 right out of the gate for a Silk#1 1-100 variant. I passed because I really feel this variant bubble is going to burst and collectors and speculators alike are going to be stuck with a bunch of really cool looking variant that we overpaid for by 1000 or more %. Manufactured rarity is not the same as true rarity. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to own these variants but I can’t rationalize spending more than 10-15$ on a variant and when all the retailers in Montreal are charging such astronomical markups it doesn’t make any sense as a collector, investor or speculator to buy them.

    1. In most cases, retailers usually have their standard markups for whatever type of variant it is, say a 1:10 variant, 1:15, 1:25, 1:50, 1:100 and so on.. but in the case of Silk #1 1:25 variant, I think it was realized that Silk #1 wasn’t ordered as heavily as anticipated so that drops the 1:25 variant totals, thus causing a demand before they were even released causing the price to go up, thus causing even retailers to bump their prices.
Is it fair that they bump their price up? Absolutely. I just imagine its like that dollar comic from 1990 that the store bought a gazillion of and they’ve been sitting in the back bins for two decades.. suddenly the comic explodes on the market, demand goes up and the comic is now worth $100. Does the comic shop who had these sitting for $1.00 have the right to bump their own price tag? Absolutely. So don’t blame the comic shop, they’re there to make money and bumped their prices cause that’s what the demand pushed it to.
I was lucky my own local shop said he could of bumped his up, someone would of bought it but he wants to stay fair to his customers, so he kept them at a sane price.

    2. Here is the thing with the price in the 1:100. The retailer had to buy 100 copies of the Silk #1 to qualify to purchase the 1:100. So if they have a fairly standard Diamond discount they probably paid $2.40 for the books. Meaning they had to spend $240 to be able to purchase one copy. They are now responsible for moving the 100 regular price copies. Most likely sitting on them for a while. A $40-$60 price tag is not bad considering what it cost them to get the book.

      1. I thought it was 1:25. My local shop got 3 total and he said he only bought about 75 copies. Said he only went with 100 copies of Spider-Gwen #1, which I did tell him he might want to order some more, he’s gonna have all the Gwemaniacs calling his store come Wednesday.

  7. I’m not saying it’s not fair. I understand basic economic principles. What I question is the intrinsic worth of the variants. Everyone is out to make a buck. I just don’t want to be the sucker everyone makes a buck off.

    1. 3,000 color and 1,500 black and white is the minimum for marvel I believe so I am guessing it will come in around that print run. Larry is a smart guy when it comes to variants but that is still a lot of money to kick out all at once.
