What’s up Chu? Mel the Movie Guy here with the 1st edition of Risk and Reward. The 1st in hopefully many Spec articles exclusive to comicsheatingup.net. Simple concept, I give you a book with a risk and reward rating…so without further ado here we go:
CATWOMAN #35 & 39– These books mark the coming out party for Catwoman as she tells the world she is Bisexual. This issue is still under the radar even though it was in several news sources including Washington Times and CNN.
The real reason I would say this is a Low Risk High Reward, is because issues can still be found at your local LCS and it seems like all the issues have dried up off of eBay. Sexuality has always been a hot topic in the world of comics, and I think this issue will at bare minimum double in value. But the real key could be behind the female she kissed … Eiko Hasigawa as she is now the new Catwoman and her 1st appearance Catwoman #35 can be had for less than cover on EBay. Now I don’t know how this will play out with DC Convergence coming soon. But again this is a fantastic LOW RISK HIGH Reward Spec.
Done and done. Got a few of these at my lcs on release. Great spec here.
Is there any precedent for a comic book character’s revelation of sexual preference increasing value?
No but press coverage of the book can spark demand on it.
The regular covers look sold out on eBay. The variant cover is selling for as much as $9.99. As goofy as this sounds it looks to be correct.
Alpha Flight 106 was surely the highest priced Aloha a Flight comic for a while – even went to a second printing – based on Northstar’s coming out. Pre eBay though.
Yea i remember that when Northstar came out ..I seen it for 100 at 1 spot back in the day
Good analysis! for $3/issue, worth the gamble
This a joke?
Copies have been scooped up off eBay.
Midtown still has both covers of #35. I pick up 5 of each and used the code JEDI and got them for $2.24 each.
Nice. A lot of places are sold out. This is a creeper. No regular covers listed on eBay. It’s a $3 book. Someone should test the water at $7. (Double cover) and see what happens.
the harley quinn cover sold for 13.99 today at 9:00am .looks like its gaining legs
Stubs for now.. until we start seeing more and more selling for over $3.50 that is.. 😉
just sold 2 for 15
Put up a regular and variant to see what happens. Asking $15.99 plus shipping but with best offer. No regular covers in eBay other than mine.
Rock on… and some think the $10-15 dollar flips aren’t worth it.. 😉
those are usually the most consistent too! if you get at $3-4 cover books and sell for 15 you already tripled your initial cost. those add up quick! a lot quicker than being able to get rid of a lot of higher priced books at once. i ended up splitting my copies between $9.99 opening bid with BIN $15 and a straight up $12 BIN. Just testing the waters to see what one is more appealing.
I just added some regular covers on there. Starting bid at $9.99 with BIN $15 and I already have one bite after having just put them up. This might be a real nice quick flip!
And people thought we were crazy for posting this. Got some real nasty comments in reference to it that won’t see the light of day.

I don’t see why people would go crazy over this. There have been other specs based on lifestyles or disabilities. A good example being Face Value. I think that people who are within this orientation would love to have a comic with someone who represents them. Just like any other person would like a relatable character. Do you think the responses came from the subject matter?
lol I hope this gets better ..definitely a nice flip
That’s just silly. Anything like this that’s in the general public conversation has a chance to catch a spark. Wasn’t even on my radar until I was at the LCS with my fiance (who doesn’t normally read comics) pointed at it and asked “isn’t that the issue where she comes out bi-sexual?” Figured I better pick up a few copies if even she knew about it.
How dare you guys make money off a fictional characters sexuality? You all should be ashamed of yourselves! 😉
