Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday, New comic book day, like your birthday in the middle of each week. Let’s hear the new week’s pick ups. And as always, what is on the shelves stacked deep and what was gone.
Wednesday
Looks like a fairly solid week for new comics.

  1. My definite pickups:
Batman ‘66 #21 (Just good fun, loved the original show so these are must reads)
Suiciders #2 (Thoroughly enjoyed #1 so must pick this up)
Autumnlands Tooth & Claw #5 (Suprisingly, I did not know I would last this long with this one but I’m enjoying it)
Chew #47 (Duh, you notice my nick?)
Rumble #4 (Very entertaining so far)
They’re Not Like Us #4 (Better than I expected and seems to be getting better)
Thief of Thieves #27 (Still going)
    Walking Dead #139 (Duh!)
    Wytches #5 (Of course)
Darth Vader #3 (Even if I wasn’t reading it I’d be picking it up)
GOTG #25 (Love me some Guardians but not really into the Black Vortex storyline, I’m kind of over X-Men currently… it’s too soapy for me)
New Avengers #32 (The End is Near)
Abigail Snowman #4 (I haven’t actually read these yet but picking them up for the kids, but I’ve skimmed and it looks like a fun read)
Black Hood #2 (#1 was quite good, left me wanting more)
Squarriors #2 (Loved the first one and the art is amazing)
Smaller week but it’s gonna still be costly, local shop secured me a copy of Vader #3 1:25 variant but at $50, which I’m a sucker and will likely fork over the cash for.

    1. I’ll join you in the sucker category. Paid the same amount to secure a copy of the Vader variant. Usually not a fan of paying that much for a just released book… but my inner Star Wars nerd wouldn’t let me pass it up.

      1. Yeah, my usual shop doesn’t usually hike them that high usually but I don’t mind supporting the smaller shops, he’ll get my money.

    2. My LCS wants $45. At that price, I have to pass. $25 is about my tolerance for variants of series I’m not completely invested in. After going all-in on Spider-Gwen, I’m suffering a bit of variant fatigue right now.

    3. Darth Vader #3 Update in Austin:
So, two out of the 3 shops I frequent had no Darth Vader #3 to put out on the shelves to sell. One only got enough for pulls and was still short. Another shop the same. Austin Books had about 50 leftover after pulls but are limiting 1 per person.

      1. Oh and about half of the ones Austin Books did have had a nice cover ding on the front, could be pressed out but still.. ding.. a ding!

      2. Midtown Comics is my LCS and they had a good amount of Darth Vader #3. Still some there. When I went in before work I was able to grab 5 copies. By the time I got back there was a 1 per customer limit. Also when I first walked in all the variants were already gone. Grab what you can guys!

        1. Midtown probably is good about allocating for Web sales and in store sales…. cause they have been sold since around Sunday.

      3. Agreed, from my years going there I always notice they usually have a decent stack of an issue even if they are sold out online and have their pull lists. When Pussycats was going crazy a couple weeks ago they had a good 15 just sitting on the shelf for like 3 days until I went and just cleaned it out. Even things like Detective/Endgame, Lady Killer, and most things that are blowing up. But again, as evidence with Darth Vader #3 1:25 sometimes they can’t hold back demand. They had the variant for $15 so I had a feeling those would be dry before I even had a chance.

    4. My extra pickups were: Aquaman Free Willy variant cover.. so awesome! Also picked up the Dark Justice Beetle Juice movie variant.. love Beetle Juice. Also picked up Pastaways.

  2. Rumble #4
    Wytches #5
    Darth Vader #3
    Abigail Snowman #4
    New Avengers #32
    They’re Not Like Us #4
    Thief of Thieves #27
    Walking Dead #139
    Autumnlands Tooth & Claw #5

  3. The Empty #2. I feel I’m one of the few that really enjoyed #1, and I’m hoping #2 will deliver on what some of you think is missing.
Vader #3 has been shorted at my local comic store, and what they did get is damaged. They all have a 1″ split in the spine fold. I have a feeling it’s worth paying the extra cash now for one online in hopes that it will jump up way more in the next few weeks.

  4. Darth Vader 3 (scored 2 online for $4.95 each, I hope my LCS will have some in and I will be waiting for the doors to open).
    Black Hood 2
    Deathestroke 6
    Big Thunder Mountain Railroads 1
    Hit 1957 1
    Joe Frankenstein 2
Miami Vice Remix 1 ( Grew up in the 70’s and 80’s got to check it out)
    New Avengers 32
    Pastaways 1 Secret Origins 11
    Squarriors 2
Dark Towers Drawing of the Three House of Cards 1
    TMNT Mutanimals 2
We Can Never Go Home 1
Wytches 5 (fantastic book, Scott Snyder is one of my favorites)
Jem 1 (yes I am going to pick up a couple copies, 1 for daughter and one just incase)
    Justice League Dark 40
Suiciders 2 (1 was pretty good)
Transformers Windblade Combiner Wars 1 (I am a sucker for #1 issues)
    Invincible 118 (Kirkman and it’s a quarter)
More than likely more once I get to looking around.

  5. Darth Vader #3- Already up to around 13$+.(Maybe me just being paranoid but…limiting the availability of one of the first key issues of this whole round. Doesn’t seem accidental. could be wrong.) Im betting heavy on it.
Disney Thunder mountain Railroad #1. Cant skimp on the Disney spec man. Lol.

  6. I’ve had to stop buying from a certain seller this week, which pretty much qualifies as my LCS (since there is none around me). I’ve basically been running into problems on ebay recently, with multiple purchase orders going through separately, which would incur them extra Paypal fees. When this started, I first emailed them, told them this wasn’t my intention, and asked what was going on. The reply’s were always “it’s your fault, not ours.” So this week they send me an email as if I were some 3 year old new customer, who had never touched a cpu in their life, and like I hadn’t been trying to sort this issue out with them prior. So now I was cheesed, and told them how I felt, having been buying my mains from them for around 3 years, each Wednesday, easily spending $3k yearly, and never before having these problems. But still, I get the same reply “it’s your fault.” I said I’ll go happily elsewhere, and they happily blocked me from buying from them. Yes, they actually blocked me!
Sorry for the vent…I’ll feel better now 🙂

      1. Thanks man…
Here’s my pick-ups for this week (from multiple sources now!)
        Chew #47 (The must have!)
        Suiciders #2
        Rumble #4
        They’re Not Like Us #4
        Thief of Thieves #27
        Wytches #5
        Darth Vader #3 (x 5)
        Darth Vader #3 1:25
        Pastaways #1
Big Thunder Mountain Railroads #1 1:25
We Can Never Go Home #1
Aquaman #40 (Movie Poster Variant- Free Willy!)
        Batman And Robin #40
        Flash #40
        Zombies Vs Robots #3

    1. I don’t put up with sh!ttee service myself. mycomicshop I swore to never do business with as well after I found their double standard. They claim that they guarantee every purchase from loss or damage. But one of their shipping services they then claim if it’s damaged, they’ll do nothing about (which no one really notices until a comic comes damaged).
Basically after I got a damaged book and notified them, they pretty much told me to eff off. I pointed out which standard they uphold, never heard back. So yeah, don’t shop at mycomicshop. The sad part is, the way they package isn’t terrible but if you pick the cheap option, all they have to do to prevent damage is just add an extra inch of cardboard that extends around the comic, slapping a comic that’s on the same size of a piece of cardboard is not going to protect it from corner dings and side dings, the comic takes the blunt of the blow along with the cardboard when it’s the same size.
The only reason I went the cheap option is because I was only buying one comic. I’m not spending $5 to ship a $3 book.
So yeah, people who give horrible customer service should go out of business. Don’t feel one bit sorry for them.

        1. They’ll never get my money again, ever! I’d rather not have the comic than potentially deal with them again.

    2. It’s hard when you live in a place where the closest LCS is an hour away( as I do). I find that I have missed out more times than not on key books (by the time I can get there), and if I can get them (online); buy the time they arrive in the mail, it’s up to a week after release and the market is flooded by then. I know how important it is to have a trustworthy online source to get your comics and I’m sorry they treated you like that; it’s just plain wrong, A loyal customer should not have to go through that.

    3. Sounds like Mile High Comics. I would order from them from time to time and one day I found out I was banned. I had no idea as to why and when I called their “customer service manager” I was hung up on. I did get a hold of the online manager and she looked into it. Turns out I was never banned and it was a mistake on their part… I looked into that kind of thing and was surprised to find out how many people have gotten banned from Mile High for various reasons the most popular one was complaints about poor grading. Needless to say even though I am off their banned list I don’t buy from them nearly as much. Actually only once since it happened. There are plenty of other businesses that will be happy to take my money. Mile High isn’t the only one.

    1. Make quick profit now if you can. Hold if you want to gamble not knowing if people are going to like the new character for the long haul.

  7. 1. Darth Vader 3 (I’m buying into the hype that this will have investment potential)
    2. Deadpool 44 (only one more issue till he dies!)
    3. Guardians of the Galaxy 25 (Maybe-this series is one of my subscriptions, but I haven’t been following all the Black Vortex crossovers and the series is about to end, so is it really worth the higher price tag?)
    4. Inhuman 13 (Is Uncanny Inhumans going to be the new status quo when this series ends?)
    5. New Avengers 32
    5. Wolverines 12
    6. The Walking Dead 139
    7. They’re Not Like Us 4
    8. Wytches 5
    9. Suiciders 2 (Maybe-enjoyed the first issue, but its a little pricy for an issue that doesn’t include a digital copy).
Back Issues: Rat Queens 9, East of West 11-18, Darth Vader 1-2

  8. Well thats was an adrenaline filled morning. After hitting 3 shops inside an hour of them opening, one of them twice, I managed to snag;
    5x Darth Vader #3
    2x Darth Vader #3 1:25 *hell yeah!*
    2x Futures End #57
    Deathstroke #6 1:25
    Hulk #13
    Edge of Spider-Verse #2 5th print
    Walking Dead #139
    Wytches #5
    Wayward #6
That Totoro Wayward variant inspired me to hunt out the first 5 issue’s too. I have ordered the variant from thirdeye, the postage will run me as much as the comic but had to have it. I actually have the original poster, not just a print but an original Japanese promo poster from ’88 and it’s not hung in my daughters room, no it takes pride of place in our living room, fair to say Totoro gets a lot of love in our house!
Unfortunately the Enormous TPB wasn’t out yet, although it was listed for release today, did anyone else see it? I’m looking forward to actually reading it instead of just looking at the covers! (I did read my dinged up Kaiju variant of issue 1 and it was awesome).

    1. I like Enormouse. The story is pretty good and the art is great. If they do follow through with making it into a TV series I could see it working well. If the budget is decent.

  9. One of the few weeks in recent years where my love of Star Wars overlaps with speculation. Already had three copies (including Larocco variant) on my pull as of last week. Looking forward to the shortage, first-appearance, and subsequent reprint.

  10. 4 books for me.
Grindhouse #3: Grindhouse is back! It’s been 3 months since the last issue.
    Darth Vader #3:
Goners#6: I may be dropping this one soon. It will probably depend on how this issue is.
Wytches #5: This is a solid series and one i’m really into.

  11. Got the 1:25 Larroca variant for $15 at my LCS. I have to sit on this book for that price right? Also got 4 regular copies.

  12. Really big week this week, but here are the highlights:
Futures End #47 (1 copy just in case this one blows up)
Hulk #13 (Managed to find 3 copies and they all look great!)
Rumble #2, 2nd Print (cool cover!)
    Secret Origins #10, 2nd print
And finally, Darth Vader #3 – 2x variant, 2x regular. And I did not have to pay $45 for either of the variants. 🙂

    1. Yup, mine was too. I budged and got it since they had no spare regular covers to give out. Another store that was limiting regular covers to 1 per customer jacked theirs to $60.

  13. Got lucky and snagged the one and only copy of Darth Vader #3 1:25 variant for $12 at my LCS. Also picked up Wytches #5

  14. What do you think the print run is for Darth Vader #3. My LCS had tons of copies and they aren’t going fast.

    1. #1 had roughly 250k print run. #2 had 100k so my guess is it’s going to be around 100k, maybe a little less. That puts the 1:25 variant at roughly 2500 total available.

      1. It might’ve been lower man. I have been hunting all day. This book is impossible to find in large quantities. 1-2 at most. Most places sold out or shorted.

        1. Diamond hasn’t shipped them all out yet, there was a goof that delayed shipment. So, hard to find currently.. when the rest are shipped, not so hard to find more likely.. 😉

        2. See madduxxx comment below where he commented on his pickups and then explains some more on the Vader info..

      2. No, a 1:25 variant on an approx 100k print run would itself have an approx 4,000 issue print run. 2500 1:25s would be on a 62.5k print run.

  15. Pickups:
    Drifter 5
    Rumble 4
    They’re Not Like Us 4
    Wicked & Devine
    Wytches 5
    Munchkin 3
    Squarriors 2
    Silk 1 2nd print
    Walking Dead 139
    Hulk 13 x 2
    Invincible 118 Display x 2
    Invincible 118 x 20 (Comic for a quarter? That’s 20 free giveaways I just bought for 4 dollars. (W my 20% discount.))
    Darth Vader 3 x 5
Darth Vader 1:25 x 1 – my LCS sold to me for 10 bucks ?
I would (am) flip all the regular Vader 3 covers. According to my info, these were not underprinted or short printed. There was a problem during printing causing a delay in completion of printing this book in time for all copies to ship. There is another wave set to hit the market next week. Sell now at 15 and buy back next week at 4.

      1. Ughh.. my WordPress app on phone is cutting my replies. I was replying about the Vader #3 short supply currently. I’m sure there will be plenty come next week but I also heard it’s just the regular covers, the shops did or should of gotten all of their 1:25 variants though, unless I’m mistaken.

      2. You guys think getting rid of the regular covers asap is a good idea considering the possible resupply? I missed out on the 1:25 Variant but have a nice supply of regular covers I can funnel out.

        1. If you got extras to sell, I would. I only got one but from the sounds of it, more will be coming. That’s when I probably will pick up some for the long haul and gamble, but I don’t think I’m going to buy too many. If you can make profit now, do it.. cause you might be a bunch more coming to your LCS next week.

        1. I’m in front of a computer 90% of the time for work so I’ve got a tab opened pretty much to CHU all day. 🙂

  16. On an unrelated 3/25 pull note, I received my triple signed Spider Gwen grades back from CBCS.
    ESOV #2 9.8
    Anka variant 9.8
    Spider Gwen regular 9.8
    Phantom variant 9.8
    Heroes Variant 9.6
    I’ll take it.

    1. Niiiice!!! How do you like the CBCS cases? I sent some books to them in December… Still waiting to get them back! Three still need to be graded. The one that was, is an Avengers #55. I was hoping would get a 7.0/7.5 got a 8.5!

      1. I haven’t personally owned a CBCS book yet, as this was the email with the grades. They just left quality control. I’ve always done CGC. The books I’ve glanced at in person looked pretty good though. They turned mine around pretty quick, and had excellent customer service. If these fetch similar prices to CGC online, I’ll be a CBCS regular..that’s for sure.

      2. Thanks Anthony (comment below). Next time I will pay the extra $8. The wait has been a bit tedious but I’m glad the cases are good! I think I have up to another month before the rest get graded….sigh.

      3. Thanks Matt. Good to know. This is my first order with CBCS as well. From online sales it looks as though they are getting pretty close to if not the same as CGC. As usual PGX books seem to get about 8% to 12% less.

      4. Yea, I agree on the fast pass. That’s what I did. It also helps to follow up via phone call and speak with a customer rep. She told me today that she would push it through since it was a day late, and I got the email an hour later that they had been graded. Great customer service. I would call up there and be polite, ask about time standards and why you haven’t received your books.

      5. Has anyone ever had any experience of sending a book you had CGC’d to CBCS and received a higher grade than the book did at CGC? I have super crispy copies of Sandman #1 and #4 and they received scores slightly lower than I expected.

  17. Darth Vader was being limited to 1 per person. I grabbed a regular and snagged the last variant (they got 2) for $25. Also ordered a set online, so I’ll flip this one and hope the other one ships…Its pretty fun going to the LCS during the day on my lunch breaks!

  18. Hit three stores today:
Darth Vader #3 was a limit 1 per customer in two of the stores, but each had a fair amount of copies on the shelf. One had the variant for $65. The other had it for $12. Grabbed that one in order to flip to make up for the one I already paid $50 for.
    Autumnlands #5
    Big Thunder Mountain Railroad #1
    Black Hood #2
    Catwoman #40 – Bullit cover
    Chew #47
    Curb Stomp #2
    Empty #2
    Past Aways #1
    Rumble #4
    Suiciders #2
    They’re Not Like Us #4
    Uncanny X-Men #32 – Phil Noto variant
    Walking Dead #139
    Wytches #5

  19. That Darth Vader #3 is nuts! My LCS sold me one for $30 plus 2 regular covers at cover price. $30 is usually a little much for me to shell out for a 1 in 25 variant but this one looks to have potential outside of the standard hotness when a book is new. I was thinking about going to other local shops to get a couple more but the rate these were selling I doubt any others would have had any left by the time I got there. Regardless I am happy I got one variant at a not so bad price.

  20. No LCS around me limited Darth Vader #3 and they wanted 12.99 for the variants at Buy Me Toys.com and $50 for the variant at the other stores. Picked up Hulk 13 at cover, a couple of Futures End #47 for the new Baman Beyond some cover priced Lazarus stuff.

  21. Hit 2 shops at opening, got 3 copies total of the Vader 1:25 at $10 each and 2 of the regular. All in a day’s work

  22. Darth Vader #3 (3x regular, 1x 1:25 for $10)
    Deathstroke 6
    Arkham Manor 6
    Gotham by Midnight 5
    Hulk 13
    Batman and Robin 40
    Hulk vs Thanos 4
I received my copy of Silk #2 Phantom Variant however, it was very damaged. They used this basic bubble envelope that was poor quality, apparently they were using a new shipping company. My heart hurt when I saw the back of the book bent. Anyway, I called and they said they would ship me another one. The guy on the phone was really kind and took good care of me. Waiting for the book to be reshipped.

  23. Inhuman #13
    Daredevil #14
Elektra #11 (The last issue in this series. Nobody had very many, only what I had because it was in my pulls. Could be a really low print run)
    Walking Dead #139
Darth Vader #3 (only found two copies between 4 shops. The one variant I found was $75! Uhhhhhh NO)
    Wytches #5
I also found another Inhuman #12 Noto variant. Such a beautiful cover. And picked up Marvel Two-In-One Annual #7 in NM condition for $20. First appearance of The Champion, 1982. Great find imo.

  24. 6 Variants of the Vader..20 Regular copies..I dropped 2 of the variants ..and they got damaged..oh well ..and Walking dead ..im about to read now after i finish the latest edition of Risk and Reward

  25. My main LCS here in Hawaii sold out the Darth Vader variant. Got 2 regular copies though. Other LCS down the street had the variant for $75. $75! And the spine was bent pretty good in two places. Quickly passed on that.

    1. Yeah, if and when I pay premiums for a variant, it’s gotta be 9.8 quality. I’m not spending good money on a comic that’s beat up from the start..

  26. Darth Vader 3 x2
    Big Thunder Mountain Railroads 1
    Miami Vice Remix 1
    Jem 1 E
    Invincible 118 (Kirkman and it’s a quarter)
Anyone know about the logo variant? Which is the variant? Small or large? I have the small with circle. Thanks guys.

      1. I’m curious how large or small the print run was on this. Also how small or large the variant logo print run was.

  27. just got back from local comic shop
    bought
    silk 1 1st print
    hulk 13 3 copies
    bitch planet 2
the dude at shop said he would look for deathstroke 1 variant 2014
    they are a little unorganized
this weeks comics where not in yet so i stocked up from last week
