DrunkWooky's Crystal Ball Spec

I’m sure you have seen Marvel’s September solicitations. One image in particular stood out to me. While we know that Red Wolf will be in Marvel’s All New All Different Universe, it seems like Arkon, from Weirdworld, is sharing a small portion of the limelight on the Alex Ross cover of Secret Wars #7.
Of course, Arkon may not survive Secret Wars, but who knows. With Spider-Gwen, it appears that Marvel reacted pretty quickly to fan feedback, and Weirdworld is gaining some acclaim and traction with issue #1.

Cover price copies of Secret Wars: Weirdworld #1 are still in abundant supply online, with some cheap variants. Also, the first appearance of Arkon, in Avengers #75 is not an incredibly expensive book as of right now. Very Good copies can be found for $10-15.
I just recently put my money where my mouth is and got a copy of Avengers #75 appearing to be a 7.0 for about $20.00. Also, I doubled down and got the Steve Epting Secret Wars Weirdworld #1 for $7.00.
If not an immediate buy, this might be one to watch.

In additional Big Two news, Snyder and Capullo over at the “Dreaded Competition” (DC, Tom DeFalco’s term from the introduction to the Secret Wars TPB), the same team who brought us Court of Owls, will be introducing Mr. Bloom, a new villain in Batman #43 (35% off on pre-order at TFAW. There certainly have been some collectible moments going on in the Batman Universe recently (Death of Joker/Batman, first new Gordon Batman) and now a new villain. Definitely one to watch. Not all first appearances are a big deal. Peter Urich died off immediately in Armor Wars. I think a new villain in Joker’s maniac vacuum might be something to look out for, though.
Thanks to DrunkWooky for this one.

  1. Yeah I read about Mr. Bloom in my previews book. It sounds great and already put in for 2 copies. No one can replace the joker but to have another maniac on the lose would be interesting specially with the new batman.

  2. Does anyone know if the bombshell variant of Batman #43 will have a smaller print run? Looking online it looks like most retailers expect a 2:1 stock ratio, at least in preorder availability.

    1. I don’t expect any of the bombshell variants to heat up or go up in value. The last round, they did some cool one’s but they can easily found at or around cover price. Not spec worthy at all I’d say. Buy them for cool cover art, not to flip for sure.

  3. I’m super stoked for Mr. Bloom, I’m also always happy when people tell me to speculate on Avengers books under 200. I’m always like “if I HAVE TO BUY it I guess”, and then I never sell it. Good news is I’m sitting on, almost every single key from between 50 and 150 now, including Ultron and Vision stuff. Bad news is I can’t ever being myself to sell any.

  4. Mister Bloom has been hyped too high for weeks and weeks now for this to be a super long term hold, if normal average bat issues (meaning things with no major significant story line) get around 100,000+ in monthly prints, this will be between 100-200,000 making the print size major , it wont hold any weight in the after market, because the second a show.. a movie.. or a spin off with Mr Bloom is announced ebay will be flooded with these issues, and for some reason DC has stopped their production of 1:25 variants for Batman. If copies get shipped damaged and only a few are high grade, i could see this being popular, but as of now an issue with over 100k print run is nearly meaningless when the market will be full of the “CGC 9.8” we’ve all been plagued with on ebay

    1. Good point. I’d agree. Batman 41 was definitely a quick flip. At 35% below cover I think I can risk a copy or two, though.

    2. Agree! Plus, a super villain with a big flower on his face can’t remotely come close to filling in for Joker. I mean, I’ll give Flower Boy a shot, but c’mon! They couldn’t come up with something a little more ominous than “Mr. Bloom”!?

  5. It’s like the 90’s all over again: spec’n on new characters/costumes & flippin’ variants.
Sadly, only the price has changed.

    1. I am not sure it is as bad as the 90’s but I know people make the comparison a lot. Until we get to a random issue with a chromium cover for no reason, or glow in the dark, or a bullet hole in the center than I think we will be ok.

      1. Origins II #1’s clear acetate cover? Death of Wolverine Chromium covers? These are ominous omens.
