Comics Picks of the Week for Delivery 7/29/15

Each week hundreds of new comics hit the shelves, all with potential. Some live up to that potential. Here are the ones that we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 7/29/15:

Not a big week for me and it is rare that happens. Instead, I am going to sink a few bucks into one of my other hobbies, Godzilla collectibles. The Godzilla 1974 figural bank comes out and will look good with my other Godzilla stuff. But by no means does that mean there aren’t a ton of great books out.

The Random DC on the List
Batgirl #42– Easy pick on this one. Livewire is reintroduced in the New 52 Post Convergence (whatever it’s called now) Universe. Popular character with really only a few appearances. Plus, she will be on Supergirl TV show.

The Naughty Banned One
Grindhouse Drive in, Bleed Out #7-Banned in Canada. Over the top sex and nudity got it banned. Buy them, list them for higher than cover and ship to Canada. (and hope it doesn’t get flagged in Customs.)

The Small Press Gems
Hacktivist Vol. 2 #1– The first series was a great read. So looking forward to this one.

The Pick of the Week
Sex Criminals #11– Hands down winner of the week. Especially if you get a sketch. Sold out months in advance, thanks in part to the delay, funny story. People will be picking them up like scratch off lottery tickets. Will be able to sell the unopened bagged ones for more than cover as people try to get them.

Returning Favorites:
Low #8- Remender returns with the awesome undersea series.
Manhattan Projects Sun Beyond the Stars #2– Wish the series was more regular, but happy to get a series of mini-series.

Poyo’s Sex Criminals 11 Sketch cover.

  1. Yeah, I’m looking forward to Hacktivist #1… volume 1 was great.

I think Manhattan Projects should start to be regular again.. seems they kind of go on hiatus during the bigger conventions as volume 1 was pretty much monthly without any long gaps.

  2. Finally Sex Criminals is released! I can get my pre orders now. We should have people send you pictures of their sketches and make a post with a bunch of them. That would be neat.

    1. If I don’t get a Sketch Cover I am going to be So Disappointed! I pre-ordered a Ton of these, from several different sources, and hoping I get lucky. I got to meet Zdarsky & Fraction at Charlotte Heroes Con last month, and while he said he wouldn’t consider that to be “lucky”, he drew some dicks on one of my regular covers in case I don’t get a sketch cover, lol.

      1. Hmm… Looking on eBay, so far only 2 sketch covers are listed for sale; one already has a $40 bid; but strangely enough they show the sketch done on a smaller trading card sized frame which lies on top of the regular cover background. This isn’t the same as what was previously shown in a photo promoting the sketch covers being a large frame on a blank white background. I wonder if they ended up doing More sketch covers at a smaller size during the delay? I hope the bigger actual-sketch-covers are also still inserted here. I can’t imagine that table full of piles & piles of the white background sketch covers was photoshopped, right?? Lol.

Also funny that a rookie seller with little feedback has taken the actual photo from one of the actual sketch covers that is for sale and used it for their listing of one of the regular covers, as if that is the actual item they are selling, when it’s clearly been stolen from another seller. They’re going to be getting some angry bidders…

        1. So we all know the story that they were supposed to put $1000 in a comic but was told it was illegal. Then they got together for 30 hours and did a ton of sketches on a special cover. Those had to be scrapped because they used licensed characters on some of the sketches. Appears this was the solution to fix the issue.

      2. Ugh, really?? Well, they couldn’t have scrapped them All, since there are visibly ones that didn’t use licensed characters, right? Cause now I am hoping to get one of the larger white-background sketch covers, lol.

When did they post news about the sketch covers being scrapped? I kept watching this get pushed back week after week, but never saw anything about Why…

      3. I did some digging, newly-including “licensed characters” in my search terms, and got one blog thread to come up where a fan is talking about a panel he went to where they explained the delay, and apparently Gave Away the original full-size blank covers to the audience. So I guess they won’t be showing up in the polybags, since a few responders mentioned getting blank covers with non-licensed-characters on them. They also said the reason they are now coming with a piece of tagboard and a black bag inside of a pink bag is because they discovered the pink bags were see-through after they got going with bagging them. And it sounds like an even bigger issue beyond the licensed characters alone is the idea of licensed characters performing sex acts or doing things that would upset their creators, lol.

      4. I thought about selling the one I got but after thinking about it, these are all sort of one of a kind so I’m likely going to keep it. Plus I’m happy mine wasn’t some random sketch and it’s related to the comic.

    2. I gave Anthony my pic of the sketch I got, maybe when I get home I’ll take a better one as the one I took was in the car after I purchased.
