Wednesday Winner: Straightjacket #1

It is always great to walk into your local comic shop and pick up comics each Wednesday, it is even better when some of the books you picked up can be sold for multiple times cover price by the end of the week. Straightjacket #1 is one of those books.

It is pretty well known I love horror. Amigo has put out some of my favorite recent horror books. Roman Ritual and Westwood Witches. The new series, Straightjacket , just one issue in, has followed along as being a superbly creepy book, with excellent story telling and art. The art really complements the writing and is done in black, white, and red, this works very well.

We previously featured the book both as a Big Gem from Small press pick and more recently as a pick of the week.

All three series, Westwood Witches, Roman Ritual, and Straightjacket, are written by El Torres. El Torres has a keen sense of what is scary.

Needless to say, the book sold out in advance of release, and will be very difficult to track down. All the major on-line shops are sold out. There is only one copy up on ebay and it is going for just under $20. Recent auctions wiped out all the cover price copies, and the book has sold for as high as $12 most recently.

With El Torres grasp on eerie stories, and the art’s horrific imagery, Straightjacket #1 is perfect for the Halloween season and should not be missed by fans of horror comics. This is another hit for the publisher Amigo Comics.

  1. I can’t stress how much I recommend this book ..get this and get it now ..sold out everywhere in nyc …get it hold on to it this had media deal all over it ..fantastic read ..as well as art.. Alexandra and Alex will be comnon in the world of horror

  2. Glad I pre-ordered it, DCBS sent ont my last package yesterday so hoppfully I get it in the end of next weekend. And I just realized I havn’t red nighter Westwood Witches nor Roman ritual yet (but have both runs) so I will during the weekend:-).

    1. I snagged a copy.. I mean, the amount of comics I picked up this Wednesday, feels like I picked up a copy of every new issue that hit the stands.

        1. I liked it. The lead character is bat sh-t crazy and sees demons. She kills her brother early on and is in a mental hospital. The story is really good and I am looking forward to it unfolding.

          Sent from my iPhone

    2. Keeping in mind that issues also go over seas, the UK is a very large purchaser of US comics, as is germany, france, spain, italy, hungary and parts of russia, so that 17 per state is even fewer now haha

  3. WOW that has to be one of the smallest print run. Do u think they will do a 2nd printing since people are demanding it?

  4. They also told me that they were very close to scrapping the book because it didnt reach the1000 pre orders …thats a true story of never give up never quit ..im really rooting for this book to do well

  5. None of these in London, UK. Someone/where got them as I’ve got a couple of eBay.uk, but none in forbidden planet and weren’t even on their website. These are going to be very hard to find bar a few flipper in the next week or so. Lot of people will sit, I know I will, and then if (big if obvs) media happens, as suggested above, big boom…

      1. True Tony, for sure. So many options that it means nothing really. But it’s a great book to have, and that’s what it’s all about. All the other stuff is a side show. I like to have books like this in my collection because at the end of the day I live stuff like this, like I know you do. And if you don’t like your stuff, what the point off stuff, right! Hope your good Tony mate, sorry I’ve not been about on the pages much recently, life has got in the way, and I’ve cut back recently, but I’m always visiting daily man.

  6. I loved Roman Ritual so I took a flier and bought two copies of Straitjacket off the shelf on Wednesday, I picked up another today. If it holds up as actual, a print run of 870 is absolutely shocking. The story is good and deserves a wider release so hopefully a 2nd print will be forthcoming. Along a similar vein I can recommend “The Infinite Adventures of Jonas Quantum” from Legendary as another recent low print run book with great art, story and concept deserving of broader consumption, issue #2 came out this week. I just wish these titles didn’t always seem taper off and disappear after a few issues – I’m still salty over Hinterkind.

      1. Hinterkind developed slowly but had a ton of great concepts and a fairly unique setting, at least Day Men still makes it to the shelf every 4 months.

        1. I dropped Day Men as well. Can’t be bothered every 4 months to read. Maybe once it’s done, I’ll pick up the trades to read it.

      1. I didn’t mean you were selling. I meant ” this article is influencing the market for people to buy/flip “. Copies were selling below $10 before you posted this article.

        1. They had sold for as high as $19. I do have a pretty broad reach but not sure one article I wrote can influence things that much. I definitely am not in this to “market make” but am a big fan of Amigo. I have spotlighted Roman Ritual and Westwood Witches in the past. But then again there is a CHU effect where
Comics have sold out and done well that we have talked about. Who knows.

  7. Off topic but I noticed hack slash is getting developed for TV. I like Seeley’s horror stuff. Could strike a chord if done right

  8. Some how I snag two of these at my local comic store. They were tucked behind some no name comics. Has anyone heard any numbers for book 2 of this series?
