Each week hundreds of new comics hit the shelves, each with potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 12/9/15:
Lots of new books this week. May seem like every book is on the list.
The One With the Walking and the Dead
Walking Dead #149– Negan joins forces with Rick to deal with the Whisperers problem. Can this end well? With Negan coming to the TV show, all Negan related books should be of interest.
Returning Favorites:
Birthright #12– I do love this Joshua Williamson dark fantasy series.
GI Joe Real American Hero #221 Action Figure Variant– I am loving these covers featuring the original action figures. This one is Scarlett.
Harrow County #8– I have been beating the drum on this one since issue one came out. Someone must have listened because it is being developed into a tv series. Great story and art. Love the book.
Broken Moon #3– Famous Monsters of Filmland’s American Gothic Press has not disappointed horror fans. This book has been really good.
Returning Recent Specs:
Tomboy #2– first issue was good. Looking forward to seeing how the story unfolds. Girl goes on murderous rampage, sign me up (for the comic not the rampage). Add in the fact Action Lab books have tiny print runs and it could be good.
Monstress #2– first issue was awesome and doing well on the secondary market. It sold out and went back for a second print. Looking forward to this awesome story.
Henchgirl #2– first issue did well. Issue 2 should have a smaller print run. Sold out at Mycomicshop and TFAW already.
New #1’s
Precinct #1– Frank Barbiere on this Steam Punk detective book. Love Frank’s work and looking forward to this.
Insexts #1– After Shock’s comics newest book and first one that looks good to me. MARGUERITE BENNETT of A-Next helms this story. A cross between Lady Mechanika and Sunstone (the 50 Shades of Grey of comics)
The Troop #1– Think of a more grown up X-Men and you may be about right. Read a preview of this a few weeks back and was intrigued. From Titan Comics so it will not have a huge print run.
Small Press Gems
Snow Blind #1– Tyler Jenkins (Peter Panzerfaust) provides the art on this rural noir story. What happens when you discover your dad isn’t the man you thought he was? For high school teen Teddy, life in a sleepy suburb in Alaska turns upside-down when he innocently posts a photo of his dad on Facebook, only to learn he and his family are in the Witness Protection Program. From Boom Studios, and everything Boom lately seems to be optioned.
Eight Seal #1– James Tynion writes this new sci-fi horror series from IDW. One woman’s visceral nightmares bleed into reality as she struggles to live in the political spotlight. Is she losing her mind, or do these visions hold some darker truth?
The Picks of the Week
That’s right there are two…
Brooklyn Animal Control– This one shot is a collection of the digital only stories the TV show will be based on. Digital Comics do not hold value but this collected edition of the stories could. It is IDW so may not have a huge print run, and it is a $7.99 book so may not be ordered heavily. Both TFAW and Mycomicshop are sold out.
Violent #1– Ed Brisson’s (Sheltered) new crime book. This one could have a big print run as Image had been over printing everything in order to not have to do reprints, but Brisson still isn’t an “A” list draw (maybe an A-, but I loved Sheltered). Early reports are this one is dark and as the name suggests, Violent.
I am going to go broke this week. Let us know what you are spec-ing on.
I’m not sure when but I thought I already saw Henchgirl #2 in one of my shops.
Could be right. I know my local shops are getting them tomorrow. Indie book shipping can be hinkie.
Batman Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.Coolest book of the month!
I’m really looking forward to Violent. I love my dark, violent crime books.
