Agent Poyo’s Picks of the Week for 12/9/15

Another Week, Another Wednesday. I got the great pleasure in meeting Greg Pak (Totally Awesome Hulk) along with the lovely Marjorie Liu (Monstress) this past week at a local signing. Too very talented writers and comic book creators. So it wasn’t a bad week and weekend for me.

If your not reading Monstress, you should. Great story, top notch art work.
Also I’ll throw it out there if you have kids who love disgusting things, Pak has a kickstarter for an alphabet book of disgusting things. You can check it out at ABCDisgusting.com. He’s also Kingsway West coming soon, I think it was slated for November but probably got pushed back. I think it’s planned to be under Dark Horse. Check it out at KingswayWest.com
Now, on with the picks….

The DC/Vertigo Pick is:
Batman #47 Alex Ross Harley Quinn Polybag (DC) – These seemed pretty popular last week, so with the amount of Batman fans out there, these will likely go quick as well.

Honorable Mention goes to Telos #3.. not likely due to the story (I read #1, it was meh.. ) but this #3 has a really kick-ass cover I think. I love close up with reflections in the eyes or other objects.. not sure why, they’re just always cool I think.

The Marvel Pick is:
Star Wars Annual #1 (Marvel) – Haarkon Dak a rebel spy, who saves sympathetic Senators to the Rebel Alliance. It’s a first appearance story, so could be big if ever introduced later in movies, other comic stories, etc. Star War fan boys will be gobbling these up more than likely.

The Image #1 List:
Every week, there’s at least one Image title debuting.. this week we have two of them.

Symmetry #1 (Image) – Utopia is here, a new Matt Hawkins book. I know, another Matt Hawkins book.. seems we get about 4 of these a year, they always start off strong and then they just kind of fade away quietly. I think the only recent one that is still going pretty strong is Postal.

Violent #1 (Image) – Ed Brisson’s latest. I loved Sheltered so this is a must check out for me.

More Image books you can’t miss:

Walking Dead #149 (Image) latest hits stands, is Negan going to be trustworthy enough to help out Rick to do some dirty work? I think a Rick and Negan team up.. man, they could rule the new world together. It’s the unlikely partnership we all want to see.

<A href="Monstress #2 and #1 2nd Print with a new cover. Don’t miss out on these. With Image’s new printing default of printing a whole lot more than ordered to avoid 2nd prints, you know if a book goes to 2nd print it’s likely special. #2 is likely going to be a smaller print run and I have a feeling it’ll go to 2nd print as well.

We Stand on Guard #6 (Image) – The miniseries conclusion. A must pick up and here’s to hoping they leave it open for more story arc’s after this one ends. You can’t go wrong with BKV.

The Obvious Cash Cow pick of the week:
Gwenpool Special #1 (Marvel) – The one I’m not picking up. I’m so tired of Gwen.. Marvel hit a cash cow and you fan boys are ruining it by demanding absurd comics. Sorry, I liked Gwen when she was dead.. Marvel, please kill off all the new Gwen’s you’ve created..

The Indie Pick of the week goes to:

Snow Blind #1 (Boom!) – What do you do when you find out your family is actually in a witness protection program? Seems like a very interesting story with lots of promise. Plus Tyler Jenkins is covering the art, which I really enjoyed with Peter Panzerfaust.
Honorable Mention goes to:

Troop #1 (Titan) – It’s a grown up adult only version of X-Men. I got the pleasure to read #1 before it hit stands. It’s nothing new or ground breaking but for those that love the people with abilities being hunted type story, this is right up your alley.

That’s all I got.. what you picking up? Spec’ing on? If you could buy only 1 comic this week, which one would you pick up and why?

  1. I’ve gotta disagree with you saying Marvel needs to not have any new Gwen Stacys. The first Spider-Gwen is actually pretty snazzy. Gwenpool has struck me as pretty lame from what I have read of her, however.

    1. Meh, Spider-Gwen ended up being pretty lame to me as well. It’s just a cash cow for them at this point. With all the Gwenaniacs out there now, I can’t blame them, it’s easy money. Marvel is laughing all the way to the bank with every stupid Gwen- they come up with now.. 😉

  2. Gwenpool is lame, lame as hell and one of the worst creations to come from comics…. but isn’t this a site for comic speculation and flipping comics for money? Every single person who reads this site daily should be buying the Gwenpool crap because why? It makes for such an easy flip. It literally embodies the entire reason this site exists lol, correct me if I am wrong. Is Gwenpool any more of a rediculous notion than a freaking Spider-Pig? From a comic fan/reader point of view? I totally agree with you, Gwenpool is an abomination.

    1. Only the first appearances though or the harder to find variants (which are usually only worth it if you can find them cheap or cover price). Other than that, I stopped buying Gwen-Whatever.. they print a gazillion of them and the hype dies quickly.

    2. Chris, I am with you on making the money. This site does exist to show off books that are flippable. I do think we do a good job on spotlighting some pretty cool comics, especially small press books as well. It is tough when you are both a collector and a seller to separate what you buy because you like it from buying to sell. I know a ton of books that I have bought to sell have ended up in my personal collection, and books from my personal collection have ended up for sale.

      1. Ill have to agree with you on that, I have bought tons of books on speculation and ended up keeping them because they were awesome (Southern Bastards, Saga). You are right that this site definitely just give news and gives a good venue for small print stuff (Enormous).
