Comics Picks of the Week for Delivery 1/20/15

Each week hundreds of new comics hit the stands, each with potential. We pick the ones we feel have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for deliver 1/20/16:
I cannot believe how fast January has come and gone. The end of the month is already here. As I sit in Maryland, just a few miles from Diamond Comics warehouse and head quarters, we are looking at a huge (for us) snow storm. Thank god it will have no effect on this weeks new comics.
The One without a Category
Devolution #1– Jae Lee covers Rick Remender’s new book. Loving Remender for dropping out of Marvel to work on creator owned things.
Returning Favorites
Postal #9– Just love this series. Still waiting for the announcement to be official on the option though.
Tokyo Ghost #5– I hated the first issue. But I hung in there. Glad I did. Love this series.
The Big Two Picks
Poison Ivy Circle of Life and Death #1– The interior art on this book is just fantastic. Poison Ivy has long been one of my favorite Batman villainesses and my son’s favorite since he saw Uma Thurman is Batman and Robin.
Deadpool #6</a- Introducing another new Deadpool. Deadpool 2099. This Fem-Deadpool (we have seen this before right?) shows up in the book in a spoof of the classic 2099 #1 covers. People really eat up new Deadpools.
Small Press Gem of the Week
Amazing Forest #1– Think Heavy Metal for a new age. We spotlighted this book a few months back and it just looks awesome. Short and gritty stories.
The Runner Up Pick of the Week
Man Plus #1– This was a tough call for me because I am really looking forward to this and the pick of the week. Man Plus is already selling out on-line. Also look for the Fried Pie Variant for #1. It features a black and white version of Ryan Stegman’s cover.
Pick of the Week
American Monster #1– Brian Azzarello and Juan Doe. The art looks crazy and the preview pages I have seen just look fantastic. This could be the breakout hit for Aftershock comics. A modern day Frankenstein story. Our friends at Hoknes USA have a variant for this. Heroes Haven have a kick-ass Alexis Ziritt variant for this as well. Both are limited to 100 copies.
That is it for us this week. Let us know what you are spec-ing on.

  1. Some Great heads up releases, Thank you 🙂 Ordered up Man Pus, Devolution & the highly interesting short story compendium small gem press release of Amazing Forest. Deadpool #6 with the introduction of Deadpool 2099 has to be another Deadpool derivative winner.
Could not agree with you more on Tokyo Ghost #1. I actually would have given up on after the first had I not pre-ordered & paid up from for the first three issues. The first book way confusing, extremely wordy & seemed as if, as a reader, we had been thrown into a world where there must have been a previous mini series missed out on !? Not the case though & thankfully Tokyo Ghost does indeed reward with sticking with. Really behind the characters & loving the sublime artwork & detailed backdrops. Issue #5 completes the first story arc. Hope the creators have this one well planned out in advance & that there is no long lay off till Issue #6.
Excellent stuff. Thank you Agent Poyo 🙂

  2. Remender’s Devolution looks like a winner as well. Really looking forward to this one. A five issue mini series, but presumably with potential as an ongoing dependent upon the success of the first story arc ?

  3. I guess I will have to go to Books a Million to get that Man Plus var. That’s where I usually get my Fried Pie var. at.
