Agent Poyo's Picks of the Week for Jan 20th, 2016

Not sure about the rest of you all but this week is going to be a smaller week for myself, which I welcome with open arms to save some money. I also read around 40 something comics this past weekend to catch up from getting behind, as I am preparing to finally read Preacher so I’m good and ready when the show debuts on AMC.
So let’s get on with the picks…
DC/Vertigo Pick:
Poison Ivy Cycle of Life and Death #1 (DC) – A mini-series but if the art is good and the story is good, could be a great pickup. There’s a Terry Dodson variant cover as well, which is selling out online already. So for all you flippers, find them cheap and flip’em if you can.
Marvel Pick:
Captain Marvel #1 (Marvel) – Has two writers from Agent Carter television series debuting their first comic writing along with Kris Anka, could lead to a great comic. Seems Captain Marvel is always a lower print run and has debuted some great spec’s in the past, particularly the new Ms. Marvel so probably a good comic to keep an eye on.
Image Pick:
Nowhere Men #7 (Image) – It had a long absence since the last issue was released, fans were ticked off but it’s now back, so let’s rejoice that we are not hopefully left in the dust without closure and hope it sticks around with a complete story.
Spec’s of the Week:
It’s a blast from the past (okay, a couple of years but in the comic world, that feels like a lifetime at times), with Nowhere Men #7 coming out and the likely second arc of this sci-fi series, long time fans will be gobbling up copies while new fans will be seeking out the first issues. So if you got multiple copies stashed away, the time is approaching to possible bring out those copies of Nowhere Men #1 and the others to make some more money so you can buy more comics…
Nowhere Men #1 should be on your spec list. But don’t leave out the other issues, #2 and #3 had small print runs, particularly #3 which the first print was near impossible to find at one point (I think I had to settle with a 2nd print of it).
Indie Pick of the Week:
Carver Paris Story #2 (Z2 Comics) – I absolutely loved #1, which was hard to come by. So I’m sure #2 will be hard to come by but don’t pass up good stories because it’s not one of the bigger publishers. Chris Hunt delivers with this story and I really dig the style of art, it matches the story perfectly.

    1. I love weird but I’ve only read the first issue so far (read it so I’d know if I was going to like it or not), I know I’m likely onboard for the whole thing.

        1. Y The Last Man was an awesome read. When I picked up the first TPB… I finished it that night and the next day went and bought the rest of them. Then a few weeks later, I bought the entire 1-60 set someone was selling online for around $300.. the #1 is a 9.8 more than likely so it’s worth more than what I paid for the entire set. The rest are all NM – NM+ as well.

          1. That’s a great find! Mine are all in trade so worth nothing except the entertainment they’ve provided. I’m about half way through now. I may have to get it in hard cover if it finishes as strong as its started.

            1. And if you like Y and BKV.. then you must read Ex Machina from BKV as well.. BKV has never let me down I think when it comes to his stories.

              1. I have not read Ex Machina. Maybe I’ll try that after I get through Y. I’ve heard several times that it’s great. I’ve learned my lesson with BKV. Anything new he puts out i’m jumping on (and have jumped on).

                1. Honestly, hands down, best comic book writer in my opinion. Seems he likes to focus on his stories from beginning to end, the entire story. There are a lot of good writers but some seem to start off strong, lose interest and their books end on a weaker side than they started. It’s like they have this great idea for a story but don’t know how to continue the story or end it.

                2. Completely agree, so many series start out so strong and then lose their footing along the way. BKV can be weird. Saga is soooo out there and now Paper Girls is going the way of Saga. I’m still liking both series even though they’re completely out of my normal comfort zone. Something about his writing that grips me and I’m willing to keep coming back for even though I would have dropped Paper Girls if it was by any other writer.
